Tyler Colvin gets 2 hits and GW Grand Slam

Cubs first round pick Tyler Colvin had quite a game today by hitting a Grand Slam in the bottom of the ninth to win vs Oral Roberts in the NCAA tourney to decide who goes to the college world series.

espn.com story The next game is on ESPNU ( not available in chicago on comcast) so hopefully they make the college world series so I can get a look at him.

After that GW grand slam
Baseball America bumped him up to the 168th best prospect in the draft.

Here's hoping he's the next Grady Sizemore....

Baseball America
has admitted that their "170th" ranking was way too low--a result of having to compile the lists months in advance.  In fact, the day before the draft, they had him listed among twelve "others who could go" in the first round after their mock draft.

Not that anyone wants to hear that though.

The key to this choice was...
... that the Cubs didn't have another pick till the fifth round. Colvin might have been a guy they'd have wanted to pick second or third, but without a choice in that round, if Hendry and Wilken had their hearts set on him, they had no other choice but to take him first -- because he'd never have lasted till the fifth round.

I agreed with the pick

I even like rolling the dice on  good ol' #83 from Notre Dame. I just thought it was a funny line so I wrote it.

I really would like to see the Cubs farm system start turning out some real players. Wilken has a pretty good history so I'll leave it to him. but when the last all star positional player the  Cubs produced was......who? Joe Carter?

The farm system simply has to improve and hopefully Colvin is the start of it.

The last Cub position player All-Star...
... produced by the system was Mark Grace.

Shawon Dunston also made the All-Star team.

I'm not going to count Joe Girardi's selection in 2000, as the only reason he went was because he happened to be the only catcher at home to receive the phone call when they were looking for an injury replacement.

Didn't the all star injury replacement thing
happen to Steve Swisher back in the day too?
One day, the dream will come true.
