Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Guzman leaves early in Iowa

In case you missed the report:

Iowa starter Angel Guzman struck out eight batters in 3.2 innings before leaving the game with cramps in his forearm. Iowa reliever Kerry Ligtenberg was tagged with the loss and fell to 2-3 on the year.

It's too early to tell anything but it's not a good sign.  He is still a year away from being useful at the major league level.  He should be slotted for Iowa for 2007.

Thank God he got injured
It's been a while since there's been an injury to a Cub pitcher.  I think that's the reason for the bombing of Lebanon.  Now, there is balance in the solar system.

thanks
Thanks for the info.  I look at the Iowa boxscores regularly and noticed he left in the 4th inning.  At the time, no further information was given.

I can deal with "cramps in his forearm".  The repercussions of that don't sound as foreboding as a "cranky shoulder".

If anyone has any updated information, please pass it on.

Also-- if anyone knows the status of Jae-Kuk Ryu's ankle injury (he's on the DL right now), please let us know that as well.

rock on,

What it says to me though
and what I've been saying when anyone brings up Guzman for trade or 2007 is that he needs to work on arm strength.  He hasn't pitched much at all in the past 2+ years.  To even think he can be ready to pitch in the majors every 5th day next spring is crazy.  Even if he has a good spring training next year, he should be sent to Iowa at least until mid-season.

Yep
Angel Guzman missed huge portions of the 2003, 2004 and 2005 seasons due to three separate injury issues.  I'm not sure he has a major league future, but if he does then the best thing for his development is to log major mileage at Triple A.  He needs to stay healthy and get innings under his belt before he can be considered a viable candidate for a job on the Cubs.

iirc
one of those years it was a foream problem.

I thought so too
I wasn't going to do a big search but I think one of his numerous problems was the forearm.

Is he
best suited for the pen??

by CubFaninCA on Jul 19, 2006 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions

thats a good thought
though i am the extreme optimist it would seem he'd be lights out in the bullpen, but id still much rather see him put together a solid second half 2006 and first half 2007 and hopefully come up and succeed as a starter for the cubs for a long time

I'm concerned
his arm just isn't made for long appearances.  I mean he's been hurt a lot.

What I've always heard is that relieving is much easier on the arm.

by CubFaninCA on Jul 19, 2006 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm concerned period
Need to wait to see what is the problem this time but if this requires him to be shut down again, the Cubs should just give up on him.  This would be the 4th year in a row with problems.

History is littered with many pitchers better than him that succumbed to arm problems.

Our pitching staff in a microchasm
Struck out 8 in 3.2 IP, left the game with an injury.

It would only be more apt if he was immediately placed on the DL.

Oh ack
I meant "microcosm."

I have a mental block about that word.
