Scoring change lowers Maddux's ERA

from ESPN.com...

Scoring change, 8 weeks later, lowers Maddux's ERA

It says it lowered his ERA by 1/3 of 1 point to 4.60 from 4.99, and that Cedeno would be charged with an error from the game on May 24 against the Marlins.

That is an absolutely correct ruling!
It should have been done that way in the first place. Cedeno's throw was awful.

Interesting, too, to think of it this way -- Maddux' stats now look better to potential trade partners. Think that had anything to do with it?

It looks like..
..official scorer Ron Jernick has a couple of these changes of heart (both in Marlin games), one this year and another in 2002,  although both corrections were done directly after the game.

I agree that it helps Maddux's trade value - wouldn't this give him another quality start also?

wow
large jump in the era dont you think? did this error lead to like four runs? i dont remember? and my damn yahoo fantasy better be on top of this if i had him in my lineup for that start

Next time...
... read the linked article first -- it clearly says that the error led to SIX runs.

Sorry ...
... I didn't know you couldn't read the ESPN link.

But I'm glad BCB gets through!

Work Filters Stink
I have the same type of deal.  I'm hoping BCB doesn't get immense popularity where I work so it doesn't get the attention of the filter nazis :)

That's why I had so much trouble yesterday trying to post the boxscore link.

Why?
Is this something teams regularly do?  Or could it be an indication of trying to improve maddog's stats for a trade?

Good question.
It does say the Cubs had appealed the decision -- it doesn't say when that appeal was made, though.

by Al Yellon on Jul 19, 2006 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Ehh..
..I doubt that there is enough brain power in the organization to come up with such a slick move like this to help Maddux's trade value.  Sounds more like dumb luck.

Does the Water Cooler get anything out of this
This was the incident that caused the normally composed
Maddux to attack the water  cooker

Maddux has had more than his share of these
this year. This one was could be appealed but
Friday's extra run due to Walker/Cedeno error
could not not to mention general bad fielding
& run support. I think most GM's know that Maddux
is better than his ERA and record would indicate

article changed
The link above now talks about maddux and clemmens.  here is the followup story.
