Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Another Sighting of the Possibility of a Maddux Rumor . . .

I deliberately phrased that title in such a convoluted manner, so as to reflect the abstract tired-ness of this whole discussion.  Nonetheless, I think we have to live with this at least until the trade deadline.

Anywho, for what its worth (and I'm sure its not much), another Maddux-to-the-Padres story has popped up, this time in the Sun-Times, which I respect enough to notice.  Here's the link:

<http://suntimes.com/output/cubs/cst-spt-cubnt26.html>

I didn't see anything else about this on BCB, so I thought I'd take two seconds to throw it out there for you all.

Do I think it will happen, no.  And I'm sure Jessica doesn't think so either. :)

peace,
hoosiercubbie

I hope not....the Padres raped us enough..
They have the 29th ranked farm system and we already took 2 of their lessor prospects.....

hey, if they want to give us
their catcher kottaras thatd be just fine with me

by kylejo on Jul 26, 2006 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions

A touch of sensitivity would be nice
You may not know any rape victims.  Actually, that's virtually impossible.  It is possible you don't know that you know any rape victims.

Regardless, there are much better ways to describe a trade of an unwanted relief pitcher for middling prospects than comparing it to a brutal crime that has certainly affected the lives of many readers of this site.

All will be fixed in 2006

umm
rape has a lot more meanings than just a forcefull sex act. Why is everyone in attack mode?

by luv4cubs2 on Jul 26, 2006 6:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I've heard this before...
and I still think it is just a stupid example of oversensitivity. Nobody would complain if someone said "The Cubs got killed" if they knew a murder victim. To be sure, rape is brutal, but if its ok to  use verbs like "kill", "slaughter", or "murder" in the sports vernacular I see no reason why "rape" is any different. Especially since, when you look up the term "rape" in the dictionary, it is clearly applicable for other uses besides the sexual crime. For example the "Rape of Nanking (Nanjing)" not only refers to the specific sexual war crimes perpetrated by the Japanese, but also the overall domination, violation, and pillaging of the people and land of Manchuria. You don't need to make your posts sound so afterschool special-tastic to sound sensitive.

tr.v. raped, rap·ing, rapes

   1. To force (another person) to submit to sex acts, especially sexual intercourse; commit rape on.
   2. To seize and carry off by force.
   3. To plunder or pillage.
   4. Abusive or improper treatment; violation: a rape of justice.

And yes, I, like the majority of people, do know a rape victim.

Well I have mixed feelings now
Hard not to want him set "free" to play for
a contender but no I don't see it either

Maddux
My bet remains that Greg Maddux remains a Cub.  If any team has interest I think it is the Dodgers.

by Mike63 on Jul 26, 2006 5:12 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed...
... on both the interest in him, and the fact that I believe he will remain a Cub.

by Al Yellon on Jul 26, 2006 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I can't imagine . . .
Any team dumb enough to let Maddux go, only to make amends by trying to get him back!

I was about to comment
but then I realized the joke.

Nicely played.

Maybe you heard it from me
I think it's a case where people should think before they speak, and rape's probably not the best word you can use. I've said that before on here when someone was making a joke about it, and I'll maintain my stance.

And you're right in saying that there are other meanings for the word, but what's the meaning that 99% of the population automatically thinks of?

"If it takes forever."

Agreed....
"Rape" is just the wrong word to use. There are a lot of other alternatives and to defend its use in the context used is simply wrong, and immature at best. It isn't about being overly sensitive either, but demonstrating some respect to those who object to its use.

by BeerCub on Jul 27, 2006 1:03 AM CDT up reply actions

fwiw
In that context, I would see "rape" as meaning theft, but then I study Classics, so the phrase "the rape of Helen of Troy," meaning her kidnapping, is second nature to me. And yes, I do know a rape victim.

by Perkins on Jul 27, 2006 3:15 AM CDT up reply actions

We can sit here...
... and argue word meanings and semantics forever.

But the fact is, I'd think "rape" is a word best avoided in discussions here.

Thank you.

by Al Yellon on Jul 27, 2006 8:19 AM CDT up reply actions

That sounds...
...perfectly reasonable. I prefer the phrase "got taken to the cleaners" anyway.

by Perkins on Jul 27, 2006 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I have a friend..
..who owns some dry cleaner stores.....that just offended me.  :)

Just shut up with the "rape" comments
yes, it's a shame that some people can't get laid on their own and have to force women into sexual acts with them.....and that is terrible. But lose the over sensitive shit....seriously.....loosen up.

by TheBeerBaron on Jul 27, 2006 8:40 AM CDT reply actions

OK, last warning.
Rape is a crime of violence, not a sexual act.

Any further comments mentioning this word will be deleted by me.

by Al Yellon on Jul 27, 2006 8:43 AM CDT up reply actions

I know more than one..
..person who has been raped.  It is a horrible thing...but it has been clearly shown above that there are more meanings in the definition of the word.  Does that mean that the media can't use that word in another sense?  I am sensitive to certain things myself and try to always take into consideration how other people may feel about certain words or phrases.  I didn't see that comment being at all related to a violent crime.
Mean people suck!!!

by santo for prez on Jul 27, 2006 2:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I will refrain from using that word...
in the interest of not offending people here, but for the record I do think it is overly sensitive and incorrect to force the censorship of that word, and unless you ban all figurative usage of violent verbs like "murdered" "slaughtered" or "killed" your rules are subjectively based on emotionalism rather than principle. This rings even more true, because saying "the Cubs got slaughtered" is complete hyperbole assuming they weren't ravaged by a group of hungry bears in the woods, while the term "rape" has definite, documented alternate definitions aside from the specific legal term that references said violent crime. In the interest of community, that is the last I will say on the matter.
