Maddux Rumor to Mets

I know i shouldn't fall for these, but this one feels like it has a little more teeth than the Padres rumor from yesterday, courtesy of The Chicago Tribune.

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060727cubsside,1,1852543.story?coll=cs-home-headlines oll=cs-home-headlines

The thing that grabs my attention is that "Maddux has agreed to go to a contender, perhaps even to New York, which previously was believed to be off limits."  These are two revelations I hadn't heard before.

Anyway, take with a grain of salt, chew up, then spit out.

peace,

Trib has to love this...
"Maddux may not bring much back from a trade, given his age (40) and record (8-11), but it could save the Cubs about $3.5 million in salary."

Might be for real this time...
And it would be the smart move for the Cubs and Maddux, even though there is this selfishness inside of me that wants Maddux to retire a Cub, the team he should have been with his entire career.

All sentimentalism aside, it would be the best move. Maddux would get a chance to go back to the postseason, he'd get to pitch in a home ballpark more spacious and forgiving of his weaknesses in old age, and we'd at least get something in return, would get to try out guys like Hill for the rest of the season, and save a bit of money too.

The question that remains is: who could we get from the Mets in exchange that would be halfway decent?

One assertion that has been made is that there is no way the Cubs trade Maddux for merely prospects, so what big league player could we net in return, and could we possibly expand the deal (include Howry, Dempster, Eyre), and get something halfway decent?

honestly
if all it took were 3 down years on the cubs to ok trade out, he would have never lasted his whole career here anyway.

Looks like
they don't have much in their minors.  What gets us Milledge (sp)?

I think they can use Walker too.  They can move Valentin back to his utility role.

by CubFaninCA on Jul 27, 2006 11:55 PM CDT reply actions

for Milledge?
nothing. We have absolutely nothing that could entice the Mets to give him up. He's a starter for him next year... even if he busts out, it's better than anybody they could get out of our system... then again, this is the team that traded Scott Kazmir for nothing.

Exactly....
Scott Kazmir for NOTHING!!! Although this year has emerged as the year of the prospects. With the ludacris amounts of money mid-level talent is getting in free agency, hot shot prospects are worth their weight in gold. So, I think Milledge/Heilman/Pelfrey/Maine won't likely be included in the package......it would be nice though....and they ARE trying to win the WS this season.....

Not exactly
that regime is no longer in New York.

Not to the Mets
In the last 24 hours I have become convinced
he IS going but not to the Mets. Padres or
Dodgers. It is a really odd situation as of course neither team is in DIRE need of pitching
but it is pretty clear that those are the two
he wants. I think the Brewers have dropped out
I think Hendry would DESPERATELY like to keep him
given the pitching woes but will let him go
out of respect for a decent prospect

Best thing I heard was his quote that he
DOES want to play another season. Well I will
get to him pitch SOMEWHERE next year

Off to park
