Brewers' Lee Dealt to Rangers

From ESPN The Brewers are trading Carlos Lee to the Rangers as part of a multi-player deal, ESPN's Keith Law has learned. The Brewers are sending Lee, Nelson Cruz and a player to be named to Texas for reliever Francisco Cordero and outfielders Kevin Mench and Laynce Nix. Don't know if they plan on signing him to a long term deal or not but Texas would be a good fit. There goes our chance for mench as well

I agree 100%
I think people are way overvaluing Kevin Mench.   I don't think he is a major league starter.  I came over here to rip the Brewers and everyone is cheering them on?  Nix is light hitting OF with a flair for the K

Cruz has shown legit power and decent strike zone judgement.  Cordero has been slipping since 05 and has a bad year so far.   I think the Brewers got "pillaged"

by JonH on Jul 28, 2006 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Carlos Lee is a free agent in two months
hence, why the Rangers seemingly got the better end of the deal.  Francisco Cordero is a coup for Milwaukee.  Kevin Mench is a nice role player.  All in all, not bad for a player you were going to lose in free agency no matter what.

Rangers owner Tom Hicks has said Texas will do everything to sign Lee to a multi-year deal.  Wave bye bye to him Cub fans.

by Mike63 on Jul 28, 2006 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow.
Given the fact that the Brewers couldn't sign Lee, they made out pretty well here. Nix is a good CF prospect, and the Brewers were looking for a closer with Turnbow being so bad.

Texas could sign him, I suppose, but remember Lee has hinted he WANTS to play for the Cubs.

I'll also say that acquiring Nix MIGHT make Corey Hart available to the Cubs. I'd love to get Hart.

by Al Yellon on Jul 28, 2006 10:15 AM CDT reply actions

How the Cubs get Hart?
With the Brewers fading, they don't need Maddux.  Would they want Ryu or Williams or Guzman??

by CubFaninCA on Jul 28, 2006 10:37 AM CDT up reply actions

hints
he hinted he wanted to play for the cubs while he was playing them. I'll be a little more sceptical than that.

Great deal for Brewers
Lee is so overvalued. Mench has virtually the same career OPS and OBP, and though he has played in a great hitter's park, so did Lee for a few years in Chicago. And Miller Park can be hitter friendly too.

Plus, Mench is nearly two years younger, and entering his prime. And the Brewers should be able to sign him.

Add to that a solid reliever who's probably just having an off year and top it off with Nix? Brewers fans should be ecstatic.

Lee is the last thing the Cubs need. Maybe if he would do a three-year deal it would be OK, but I see him wanting five right at the time a player's career numbers begin to decline.

by cubz1963 on Jul 28, 2006 1:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Puzzling on both sides
I'm not sure how to take this one.  Not sure who won either.

For the Brewers, Mench is more than an adequate replacement for Lee.  However, if they want Cordero to replace Turnbow, they should have tried harder for a closer.  Cordero hasn't been good at all this year.  Cruz is a good prospect.  Nix appears to be a throw-in.  He's had his shot and failed numerous tmes.  Maybe the Brewers hope to turn him around.  Wonder who the PTBNL will be.

For the Rangers, is Lee that much better than Mench?  If Texas wants to go for it this year, why not another starter?  Losing Nix and Cordero mean nothing.  However, if they are not going to sign Lee then I really don't understand the deal.  Does this really make them that much better this year?  Maybe they really like Cruz.  I wonder if the PTBNL can be based on whether Lee signs.

by rlpete on Jul 28, 2006 10:24 AM CDT reply actions

My thoughts exactly...
There goes Mench. What a curveball!! I thought he'd go somewhere else. HOPEFULLY, and logicly, he'll explore free agency, where he'll get a hefty pay day since he's obviously the best position player on the market.

by fuzzycubfan on Jul 28, 2006 10:28 AM CDT reply actions

Well...
I guess that means that Soriano's value won't be hurt a lot by Lee being on the trading block after all.

Then again, Tejada can't help his value, although it seems like different teams are competing for different players at this point. If Tejada moves, he is obviously the big prize of this trade deadline, and isn't he still under contract for a while?

Looks like the plot thickens, and then quickly thins again.

Wow, the Brewers "pilaged" the Rangers!!
Laynce Nix, Kevin Mench and Fransico Cordero for a rent-a-player??? HA!

btw Al, you like how I used the word "pilaged" as opposed to a certain term I used yesterday?

Lee's going to love TX.
I think the Cubs should put their money into starting pitching and forget about Lee.  With the way Barrett's hitting, the middle of the orders fine w/ Barrett, Lee & ARam. They just need to upgrade either the 2, 6 or 7 spot.

by CubFaninCA on Jul 28, 2006 10:35 AM CDT reply actions

Deep down, we all know this.....
But Lee would be a great power hitting OF option, which every good team needs....power in the OF.....

If there was even a CHANCE at signing Barry Zito, I would forget who Carlos Lee was.....

by TheBeerBaron on Jul 28, 2006 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions

I'd like to get Schmidt..
There's zero shot @ Zito.  He's from SoCal and lives in West Hollywood during the offseason.  Either he signs with the Dodgers, who have a ton of money to throw @ him or he goes to NY cause they overpay for him.

Realistically I think the Cubs can get Mulder & Eaton.  Then let Marmol & Marshall battle it out for the 5th spot.  If Prior gets hurt again, they have either Marmol or Marshall as an option, along with Ryu, Guzman and Jerome Williams.  They can always use Marmol & Guzman out of the pen too.

The Dodgers
Don't have a lot of money to throw around.  They cleared some space by moving Perez and Nomar and others will be off the books, but remember they overpaid for Furcal, re-upped Kent and still have Drew.  They aren't and organization flush with cash and they can only hadnle so many big contracts.  McCourt financed most of the purchase when he bought the Dodgers and he doesn't really have a personal fortune to fall back on like the owners in Boston/New York or a big parent company like the Cubs have.  They have to operate on a budget and for that reason I can't see them getting Zito before one of the NY teams get him.  We'll be mentioned for sure on Zito but given how these things generally go for the Cubs you know there's no way we end up with him.  Just to expensive for our blood.

by pageian on Jul 28, 2006 11:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Gagne
Forgot that Gagne is coming off the books after this season too right?  That's another $10 million they'll have to spend.  My guess would be that they resign Nomar to a larger $ contract (provided he doesn't get hurt before this year is over) and use what's left to find another bat.  I can't see them being players on Zito but I didn't see them getting Furcal either, so anything can happen I guess.

by pageian on Jul 28, 2006 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions

They want
Zito really bad.  That's what I keep hearing out here.  They have plenty of young hitters, and are 5th in runs scored.  Their rotations a little short though.

They have Gagne, Cruz, Lofton and Baez coming off the books.  They'll have money.

by CubFaninCA on Jul 28, 2006 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions

Its a shame the Cubs can't get Zito...
since we have "diet Zito" struggling mightily in the majors right now.

He probably would help out Marshall too.

I heard
Lee rejected a 4 year $48MM extension

by BadGuy on Jul 28, 2006 11:01 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, saw that
I just didn't know if he accepted an offer the Rangers gave him.  If he cares about money, he'll wait until the season is over and play the field.

Zito only cares about money, he'll go to the highest bidder.

by colossus @ Bleed Cubbie Blue on Jul 28, 2006 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

I bet
he'll take a little less to go to LA.

Him living in Hollywood during the offseason tells me a lot.

by CubFaninCA on Jul 28, 2006 11:11 AM CDT up reply actions

See my post above
Now IF Zito will take a discount to play in LA, a big discount, then maybe he ends up there.  But why would he have signed with Boras if he's thinking about taking a discount?  I don't see Zito/LA happening.

by pageian on Jul 28, 2006 11:20 AM CDT up reply actions

I'd agree that the Brewers won this deal...
Mench won't be a free agent until 2008 (I think), and I'd take him over Carlos Lee in 2007 and 2008, especially when considering their salaries. Nelson Cruz is a decent prospect, and is better than Nix, but I don't expect him to turn out to be much better than average. Cordero is a solid reliever, and the Brewers can either choose to buy out his option at the end of the year for $500k, or pay him $5M in 2007. One year at $5M isn't really a bad deal for Cordero, if he can show he's still got it.
With the likelihood that Lee walks at the end of the season, the Rangers might end up getting only Nelson Cruz and a PTBNL for Mench, Cordero, and Nix. That's not a good trade at all when thinking about 2007. Of course, if Lee powers the Rangers into the playoffs, it is probably worth it to them. This trade definitely helps the Brewers' future, which means it is bad for the Cubs.

No reason to be depressed over this
This is a rent-a-player situation for Texas.  They want to make a playoff run this year.  Carlos Lee will be sure to test the free agent market this winter.  This doesn't effect the Cubs getting this guy one way or the other.
One day, the dream will come true.

Yabbut
Just a reminder that other teams are doing things and we aren't (just like the winter meetings), mostly because we don't have much to give and there's not a whole lot of point, anyway.

Lee turned down
4 years, 48 million before being traded to Texas.  If you still think Ramirez isn't going to exercise his option and get upwards to 15 mill per for 4+ seasons, I'll take 3 grams of that!

What could Zito bring to the table?
Not only his skill, talent, and CY Young, but everyone compares Rich Hill's Curve to his.  Lefty-Lefty.  Maybe Zito could teach him a thing or two.  But Thats not what Hill needs the most.  Sorry im jumping off this topic, but he needs to develop another effective pitch not called a fastball or curve.  slider, changeup, forkball, knuckle(haha).  nething!  players expect those two pitches in the batters box.

What a stupid move for Texas...
not because they gave up so much...that is debatable.

Do they REALLY think they have a chance, though. Sure, their offense is pretty good, but there are  7 or 8 teams in the AL alone that are better than them (not just judging on record...they are just better). Plus, if they really wanted help, they need pitching far more than offensive help. If you have John Koronka in your starting rotation, you need some help.

This seems like a total waste for them. Lee has expressed some interest to play in Chicago, and has his house here still. Plus, when he's at Wrigley, he  does a pretty good Babe Ruth impression. Chances are good that if the Cubs threw some money at him, he would definitely choose to play for them. Assuming that happens, Texas basically threw away several decent players for a rent-a-player in a year that their chances of getting to the postseason are slim, and their chances of winning a WS are none. What a stupid move.

by CosmicCharlie911 on Jul 28, 2006 1:08 PM CDT reply actions

I didn't understand the deal...
... because the Rangers don't need hitting, they need pitching. And I agree, I don't think they have a chance of signing Lee.

by Al Yellon on Jul 28, 2006 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Signing Lee
I would be inclined to agree on Lee walking at the end of the year, except for two things:
  1. The Rangers have deep pockets, and
  2. Lee might be interested in hanging around once he gets a taste of hitting in that bandbox.
I still think he'll leave, but I don't think it's a foregone conclusion.
"If it takes forever."

As a Rangers fan
I feel that I should correct some of the misconceptions presented about our team during this diary.
  1. The Rangers have a great offense - This is false. This year, the Rangers have been heaviliy mediocre on offense. Surprisingly, they've struggled on O at home rather than on the road. Lee is a career Rangers killer in TBIA, and he makes up for the fact that Teixeira, Blalock and Young all decided to have off years at the exact same time. The Rangers needed O as much as they needed pitching (given that Padilla is doing well, Millwood is still solid, Eaton is coming back and outside of a few blowup 9 ER, in 3 IP games, Koronka has been pretty decent). The cost for a decent arm would be much higher than the cost for a good bat. So I'm happy that Daniels saw the market inefficiencies and exploited it.
  2. The Rangers got a 2 month rental. Most of the media here, and the GM himself, have made it quite clear that they will make a competitive offer for Lee, but won't be too heartbroken if he doesn't take it. The Rangers have a projected payroll of 45 million next year as is and have to sign several interesting FAs (Eaton, Padilla, GMJ and Lee). The owner has said that he wants the payroll to be in the 90 million range if it fields a competitive team. That's a lot of money to play with.
  3. Laynce Nix, Kevin Mench and Coco Cordero are worth anything to the Rangers. This is unequivocably false. Mench was great....for a week in May. Afterwards, he went into such a tailspin that the OF corners (with a struggling Wilkerson and Mench) essentially became offensive blackholes. Mench, unlike Wilkerson, doesn't walk a lot so when he goes cold, he becomes a complete drag on the entire offense. The fact that he got taken out of the 6th spot for a rookie (Ian Kinsler) just shows you how frustrated the Rangers were with him.
Laynce Nix is a failed prospect and at 25 years of age, he's putting up bad numbers in a hitter's haven at AAA. That's not a good player, in no way shape or form. What's worse, the organizaton's dedication to him was robbing a better OF prospect (Anthony Webster) of playing time in CF, his natural position. The fact that Nix's K/BB ratio is something like 6-1 in AAA shows you how far he's regressed.

Cordero feasted on games that were well out of reach. Monday's blowup against the Yankees just showed how much he choked in close games. He's also been god-awful against our division rivals. He's already blown 10 saves this year, 5 of them to Oakland, Anaheim and Seattle. That's not someone that you want on your team.

Oh, and Koronka's a pretty good guy, got to speak with him once at a game. He's liable to get knocked around once in awhile, but he's been solidly consistant. He's a guy that when he's pitching, I know he'll either blow up quickly or give us 6-7 innings of good ball. What more can you ask out of a 5th starter?
