Brewers' Lee Dealt to Rangers
From ESPN The Brewers are trading Carlos Lee to the Rangers as part of a multi-player deal, ESPN's Keith Law has learned. The Brewers are sending Lee, Nelson Cruz and a player to be named to Texas for reliever Francisco Cordero and outfielders Kevin Mench and Laynce Nix. Don't know if they plan on signing him to a long term deal or not but Texas would be a good fit. There goes our chance for mench as well

I agree 100%
Cruz has shown legit power and decent strike zone judgement. Cordero has been slipping since 05 and has a bad year so far. I think the Brewers got "pillaged"
Carlos Lee is a free agent in two months
Rangers owner Tom Hicks has said Texas will do everything to sign Lee to a multi-year deal. Wave bye bye to him Cub fans.

Wow.
Texas could sign him, I suppose, but remember Lee has hinted he WANTS to play for the Cubs.
I'll also say that acquiring Nix MIGHT make Corey Hart available to the Cubs. I'd love to get Hart.
How the Cubs get Hart?

Great deal for Brewers
Plus, Mench is nearly two years younger, and entering his prime. And the Brewers should be able to sign him.
Add to that a solid reliever who's probably just having an off year and top it off with Nix? Brewers fans should be ecstatic.
Lee is the last thing the Cubs need. Maybe if he would do a three-year deal it would be OK, but I see him wanting five right at the time a player's career numbers begin to decline.

Puzzling on both sides
For the Brewers, Mench is more than an adequate replacement for Lee. However, if they want Cordero to replace Turnbow, they should have tried harder for a closer. Cordero hasn't been good at all this year. Cruz is a good prospect. Nix appears to be a throw-in. He's had his shot and failed numerous tmes. Maybe the Brewers hope to turn him around. Wonder who the PTBNL will be.
For the Rangers, is Lee that much better than Mench? If Texas wants to go for it this year, why not another starter? Losing Nix and Cordero mean nothing. However, if they are not going to sign Lee then I really don't understand the deal. Does this really make them that much better this year? Maybe they really like Cruz. I wonder if the PTBNL can be based on whether Lee signs.
My thoughts exactly...
Well...
Then again, Tejada can't help his value, although it seems like different teams are competing for different players at this point. If Tejada moves, he is obviously the big prize of this trade deadline, and isn't he still under contract for a while?
Looks like the plot thickens, and then quickly thins again.

Wow, the Brewers "pilaged" the Rangers!!
btw Al, you like how I used the word "pilaged" as opposed to a certain term I used yesterday?

Lee's going to love TX.
Deep down, we all know this.....
If there was even a CHANCE at signing Barry Zito, I would forget who Carlos Lee was.....

I'd like to get Schmidt..
Realistically I think the Cubs can get Mulder & Eaton. Then let Marmol & Marshall battle it out for the 5th spot. If Prior gets hurt again, they have either Marmol or Marshall as an option, along with Ryu, Guzman and Jerome Williams. They can always use Marmol & Guzman out of the pen too.
And i think that realistically
::sheds a tear::
Just say NO to Mark Mulder

The Dodgers
Gagne
They want
They have Gagne, Cruz, Lofton and Baez coming off the books. They'll have money.
Its a shame the Cubs can't get Zito...
He probably would help out Marshall too.

I heard
Yeah, saw that
Zito only cares about money, he'll go to the highest bidder.

I bet
Him living in Hollywood during the offseason tells me a lot.
See my post above
I'd agree that the Brewers won this deal...
With the likelihood that Lee walks at the end of the season, the Rangers might end up getting only Nelson Cruz and a PTBNL for Mench, Cordero, and Nix. That's not a good trade at all when thinking about 2007. Of course, if Lee powers the Rangers into the playoffs, it is probably worth it to them. This trade definitely helps the Brewers' future, which means it is bad for the Cubs.
Well, this is depressing
No reason to be depressed over this

What could Zito bring to the table?

What a stupid move for Texas...
Do they REALLY think they have a chance, though. Sure, their offense is pretty good, but there are 7 or 8 teams in the AL alone that are better than them (not just judging on record...they are just better). Plus, if they really wanted help, they need pitching far more than offensive help. If you have John Koronka in your starting rotation, you need some help.
This seems like a total waste for them. Lee has expressed some interest to play in Chicago, and has his house here still. Plus, when he's at Wrigley, he does a pretty good Babe Ruth impression. Chances are good that if the Cubs threw some money at him, he would definitely choose to play for them. Assuming that happens, Texas basically threw away several decent players for a rent-a-player in a year that their chances of getting to the postseason are slim, and their chances of winning a WS are none. What a stupid move.

I didn't understand the deal...
Signing Lee
- The Rangers have deep pockets, and
- Lee might be interested in hanging around once he gets a taste of hitting in that bandbox.
As a Rangers fan
- The Rangers have a great offense - This is false. This year, the Rangers have been heaviliy mediocre on offense. Surprisingly, they've struggled on O at home rather than on the road. Lee is a career Rangers killer in TBIA, and he makes up for the fact that Teixeira, Blalock and Young all decided to have off years at the exact same time. The Rangers needed O as much as they needed pitching (given that Padilla is doing well, Millwood is still solid, Eaton is coming back and outside of a few blowup 9 ER, in 3 IP games, Koronka has been pretty decent). The cost for a decent arm would be much higher than the cost for a good bat. So I'm happy that Daniels saw the market inefficiencies and exploited it.
- The Rangers got a 2 month rental. Most of the media here, and the GM himself, have made it quite clear that they will make a competitive offer for Lee, but won't be too heartbroken if he doesn't take it. The Rangers have a projected payroll of 45 million next year as is and have to sign several interesting FAs (Eaton, Padilla, GMJ and Lee). The owner has said that he wants the payroll to be in the 90 million range if it fields a competitive team. That's a lot of money to play with.
- Laynce Nix, Kevin Mench and Coco Cordero are worth anything to the Rangers. This is unequivocably false. Mench was great....for a week in May. Afterwards, he went into such a tailspin that the OF corners (with a struggling Wilkerson and Mench) essentially became offensive blackholes. Mench, unlike Wilkerson, doesn't walk a lot so when he goes cold, he becomes a complete drag on the entire offense. The fact that he got taken out of the 6th spot for a rookie (Ian Kinsler) just shows you how frustrated the Rangers were with him.
Cordero feasted on games that were well out of reach. Monday's blowup against the Yankees just showed how much he choked in close games. He's also been god-awful against our division rivals. He's already blown 10 saves this year, 5 of them to Oakland, Anaheim and Seattle. That's not someone that you want on your team.
Oh, and Koronka's a pretty good guy, got to speak with him once at a game. He's liable to get knocked around once in awhile, but he's been solidly consistant. He's a guy that when he's pitching, I know he'll either blow up quickly or give us 6-7 innings of good ball. What more can you ask out of a 5th starter?
