Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Cubs' Papelbon pitching like his bro

Jeremy Papelbon, the Cubs' 19th round pick this year, is rolling at Boise.

He is 3-0, 0.79 ERA, 2 sv, Opp BA .118.  Jeremy's brother Jon is the Red Sox' closer.

Also doing well at Boise is former hot prospect Billy Petrick.  The 6'6" RHP is 5-0, 2.23.  He missed last year with shoulder surgery.

The Cubs' top pick in '06, Tyler Colvin, is batting .313 with 4 HR, 24 RBI.  He had 5 hits last night.

Boise is 23-15 and lead the division.

Define rush
Papelbon, the Boston one, was drafted in 2003 and was in the majors by 2005.

Hansen, also with Boston, was drafted in 2005 and made it to the majors that year.

Actually...
I rarely complement the Cubs farm system, but it seems like they've learned their lesson a little bit on rushing guys after Patterson. They are babying Pawelek, and to a lesser degree veal, and gallagher

by CosmicCharlie911 on Jul 28, 2006 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions

No need to rush Pawelek
since he's only 19 years old.  Veal is putting up great numbers, a lot of walks though.  Gallagher has a lot of walks too, no clue how old he is though.

Rush or Lollygag?
The problem is that the Cubs have a "procrustean box" for young players.   And, when you have both draftees out of high school and draftees out of college, this is the wrong approach.   High School draftees do have the time to develop at a slower pace.  College kids really do not.   Five years in the minors for a High School Kid is a debut at 22 or 23 in the majors.  Early-ish but about right for a prospect.   Five years in the minors for a college kid, in contrast, means about 26 for the MLB debut.  And 26 is too old to be considered to be a prospect.  Thus, but not "rushing" or "fast tracking" college draftees, the Cubs are essentially destroying their value.

Its not a one size fits all approach nor should it be.  It needs to be a flexible approach with a tendancy to rush the college signess.

I don't think anyone disagrees with you...
I realize you are "frustrated" though. That is why I mentioned Pawelek, Veal, and Gallagher as being nurtured, since they are all relatively young. You will note that I didn't mention Samardzija, who is, and should be, on a faster track than said younger talent.

I think the correct length of time to nurture players is whatever will get them the most developed and ready to go between the ages of 23-25. This is true for most prospects. You don't want to rush them in early, but you don't want them finally ready at 27 (not that they normally have a big chance by then anyway)

by CosmicCharlie911 on Jul 28, 2006 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions

27
EXACTLY.   That's part of the Rich Hill/Jason Dubois/et al problem.  They were developed too slowly and by the time they were "ready" for the big leagues, they were too old to have the time to develop normally (and they were also assumed to be able to produce at a higher level because they were older).

off topic
but when I saw the phrase "babying" associated with a player named Veal, I started cracking up.

I had no idea
that we have our very own Papelbon.

Rock on.

can you believe
there are 3 of them?  the elder, and 2 twins and they have 3 totally different ways of pitching, a right hander, left hander, and submariner.

one of the things that is really encouraging is Jonathan has been handling the pressures of closing in Boston really well (ecept of course for that bad choice in hair cuts a while ago, but that was on a bet) and he says his brothers have similiar temperments

Hopefully Jeremy can develop....
stuff close to as good as Jon's. That splitter that he supposedly just learned from Schilling is absolutely filthy.

by CosmicCharlie911 on Jul 28, 2006 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions

He should rush home this winter
and teach it to his brothers!

How's samardzija
doing at Peoria?

by colossus @ Bleed Cubbie Blue on Jul 28, 2006 1:45 PM CDT reply actions

I Believe
that I read that Samardzija is making his last start tonight for Peria before heading back to ND.  He is 1-0 there I believe.
First Boston, then the White Sox, its now the Cubs turn.

Who knows what kind of stuff Papelbon has?
I've also been wondering about Randy Wells's repertoire and velocity etc.

anyone?

by CosmicCharlie911 on Jul 28, 2006 1:52 PM CDT reply actions

I could....
but I'm asking you.

by CosmicCharlie911 on Jul 28, 2006 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Jeremy
from what I know he's a fairly hard throwing lefty, not unlike his older brother, but from the other side

I think the 2 younger ones are schedules to play in a charity event in Cambridge later this year, I'm going to try and go.

by flyball on Jul 28, 2006 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Jonathan and Jeremy...
do look a like.  I guess that means they all look a like.

If Jeremy gets promoted, I hope I get to see him.

Noooo...
Jeremy is a soft-tossing lefty that tops out at about 88-90 mph.  He's a finesse pitcher as opposed to his brother Jon in Boston.

by Maddog on Jul 28, 2006 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Sorry...
but I can't remember.  the thing that stood out was that he wasn't overpowering like his brother was, but you don't have to be overpowering to succeed.  I'll spend a little time later looking it up to see what he throws, but I couldn't tell you off the top of my head.  Sorry about that.

by Maddog on Jul 28, 2006 6:24 PM CDT up reply actions

What is the...
order of the minor league teams? Is it Boise, Daytona, Peoria?  I always get those confused.  I want to go watch the Chiefs here against the Cougars, and it would be nice if I got to see some of these players if they get promoted.

its...
boise (short A), Peoria (low A) and then Daytona (high A)

The Papelbons
Think anyone would notice if we switched them next year and had Jonathon from Day 1?

Besides the fact...
ones a lefty and the other is a righty...nope

From Baseball America Draft Blog Day 2
The Cubs drafted the brother of Red Sox reliever Jonathan Papelbon, Jeremy Papelbon, in the 19th round. A lefthander who doesn't possess the arm strength of his brother, Jeremy was better last summer when he ranked among the top 10 prospects in the New England Collegiate League. This spring he sat near 86 mph. He has some deception from the left side. He relies on command, which was not as sharp this spring as it was last summer.

Lefty/righty
Well, yeah, if you go around posting stuff like that on the Web, the cat will definitely be out of the bag!
