What about Jack Wilson?

Does anybody think that Hendry could pull a trade to get Jack Wilson from the Pirates.  He would significantly upgrade the defense at shortstop, and he would be a great number 2 hitter.  Then you could move Cedeno over to second base, where he is probably better suited for anyways.  That would still leave the center field/leadoff hitter question.  Do you still want Hendry to trade Pierre come July 31st.  He is really starting to heat up.  Maybe resign Pierre, because Pie doesn't seem to be ready at this time.  Pierre and Jack Wilson would be pretty good at the top of the order.

What do you give up?
The Pirates would want young pitchers, I don't know how many we have left after the Pierre trade. You have to be looking at full time replacements for Mad Dog and Wood for next years rotation, and maybe Prior. You can't deal away Marmol, Guzman, or Marshall. I don't know who is the Pirates GM, but he isn't going to take our trash off our hands.

Wilson
Why on earth would Pittsburgh want to trade one of its most popular players and a rock at shortstop whose compensation is modest?  And to a divisional rival with horsecrap of value to offer in a trade.

And why would the Cubs want Wilson
He's a decent to good shortstop who's not that expensive, but he doesn't have that much of an upside and, of course, shortstop is pretty well covered with a young player named Cedeno.   Wilson emphatically does not hit well enough to play any other position.

I think...
... Wilson is basically an older Cedeno. Why bother?

by Al Yellon on Jul 4, 2006 9:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well obviously
he's more of a veteran and paid more money.  Veterans are always better.

Wison just signed
a three year $20 million dollar contract.  That sounds expensive to me when you consider his career OBP is .303 and he's only had one decent year.  Al's right, he's an older Ronny Cedano, why bother?

Dave Littlefield is the Pirates GM.  He's no genius, so if we offered them Rich Hill he'd probably pull Wilson off the table and replace him with Bay.  Okay, maybe he's not that dumb, but you get my point.  Not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

we throw him Glendone for Wilson...done deal!!

Do you....
really think ss is "pretty well covered"?

I am disappointed in you.  TSK, TSK.

And, of course,
The Cubs should be playing The Riot to see if HE is the answer at shortstop and as the lead off hitter.  He probably is NOT the answer, but the chance is better than zero that he IS the answer.  But the Cubs will not know if they do not try him in the majors for an extended period.  (He's proving that he can hit in the minors.  The problem is that if the Cubs wait much longer, he will be branded, in typical Cub fashion, as a failure becuase he did so little when with the major league club and is "too old" to be a prospect.)

Ryan Theriot...
... projects as a utility player at the major league level. That said, he should be getting that chance, instead of having Neifi on the roster.

What should happen
and what do happen aren't exactly similar when it comes to the Cubs.

We're going to get A-Rod remember?
No need to trade for another SS.

Does it count that......
.....he graduated from the same high school as I did? Yes, it was 20 years later, but still, that should count for something. :)

Cedeno has had a LITTLE less playing time, but they have the exact same career OPS. Stick with the young guy.

Jack Wilson is
ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC.  The guy will bring no offense to the table.  If you haven't heard yet, the cubs need offense.  Why would you make a diary about this guy?  Seriously, please look at his offensive stats and give me an argument why the offensively anemic Cubs NEED his $20M contract.
I was hoping you accidentally meant craig wilson, who would be incredible for this team.
Craig's career.. obp=.362, slg=.490, and he's only getting paid $3.3M / year.  (sorry for always citing players' stats adn salaries and other important quantifiable information, its a bad habit of mine when evaluating a player.  I should be pulling the big names out of a hat like some seem to do)
So we're stuck in a slump, it's only been a century...

I wouldn't mind
having Craig Wilson on the team.  Never understood the Pirates aversion to him.  He's a hitter, pure and simple.  He'd be a great platoon right fielder/backup first baseman/spot starter in left on this team.  Get him 450 ab's a year and he'll do just fine.  Soooooo, the Pirates won't sign him but they'll give JACK Wilson $20 million.  And they wonder why they never get out of last place.
