Pitching staff stepping it up
The Cubs pitchers have stepped it up in the shadow of the Am Ram call out. 3 quality starts and 2 out of 3, with the one loss, the offenses fault and a Am Ram running mistake of all things. I get the feeling the Am Ram statement split the team into pitchers vs. offense were the pitchers have upped their level and are forcing the offense to up theirs. I see only good things happening when this type of scenario is in place, better baseball and a winning streak. Oh and in-clubhouse accountability to the other players and teammates.
So it goes, the drive toward the peak of 0.500 baseball. Sept 9th
Also, the Cubs are not about Dusty Baker, Hendry, McPhil or whomever. It never has been!!

What?
The Cubs aren't going to see .500 until Opening Day 2007 and then probably not again until Opening Day 2008. 2 of 3...big deal. They faced a guy with a 6+ ERA in one of those games.

Tell me this
This team has the ability to get back to that mark. If they do what they have been doing the last 5 or 6 games.
It's about the players playing. Hendry and Dusty Baker have yet to go 0 for 11 or boot a baseball!!
I thought this
It's simple, this team is fundamentally flawed, unquestionable.
It's not all Dusty's fault, if Hendry's fellatio with Wood and Prior didn't persist we might've had a shot at a .500 year, as is at this point, it's not happening. Leaning on those two was like leaning on a house of sticks, and Hendry knew it, but simply refused to recognize the truth of the matter, essentially, he's failed. Axe him, Axe Baker.
I don't even have to make mention of Baker's seizures he has everyday on the line-up cards, needless to say he makes it look like Darren filled it out.
Why is this team not going to reach .500? Hendry may pull the trigger, but it's not going to make a bit of difference for the offense that we've been given. Pierre is finally hitting, yipee, now we're going to have a guy on base that's just going to stand there a little bit more often and take more steals and not get driven in due to the team's dismal RISP %.
.500 is a pipe dream, make your peace with the fact that this team is an awful product of what the front office has to offer us and enjoy for what it is, a travesty.

The Cubs looked fundamentally good
Let me ask this, isn't that what teams are suppost to do? If a team is not going well at what point do you want all the players to phone it in? Unlike most fans these guys have almost half a season left to play. I say 0.500 should be their goal. If they play good fundamental baseball which they have the capability to do then 0.500 is possible. No more or less.
Will they get there? I don't know. But the season isn't a complete failure like most people have written countless diaries about.
Re
Kerry Wood is done for the season. Mark Prior can't seem to stop coming up with injuries. Marshall & Marmol, besides being rookies thrown into the fire a good season before they really should have been, need some rest or their arms will explode, too.
Unless the Cubs offense starts hitting like the Reds, I'd be surprised if the team plays .500 ball just in the 2nd half.
