In response to Al's posting today....

well, we're all in agreement that the 2006 Cubs are a terrible team!  However, at this point, agreeing on that doesn't really matter.  What I'm sure most of us are in disagreement about is the state of the 2007 Cubs.

So many, including Al I believe, actually have convinced themselves that the Cubs have chance next season.  Let's hope Hendry (who has always been delusional / overly optimistic) alters his entire mindset or takes his medication.
Pursuing players like Carlos Lee, Soriano, Zito, etc. would be an absolute waste next year.  When a team is as pathetic as the '06 Cubs, it requires at least one full season to rebuild (probably more, but I'm trying to comprimise here).  Next season seems like ideal season to allow our 7 prospects to continue to battle it out for the 4 spots beside Z.  Our record may be just as dismal as this year's, but it would put us in a very nice position for '08.  By that point, we'd be able to better evaluate our pitching prospects AND THEN PURSUE ANY NEEDED FREE AGENT PITCHERS.  If we only needed 1 or 2 free agents, as opposed to the 4 free agents it appears we need this season, then we'd have that much more money to throw at free agent position players to boost our dismal offense.
Also, we'd be able to better evaluate guys like Theriot, who has amassed an obp of .362 in roughly 42 major league at bats this season.  That may be a small sample size, but it certainly warrants us allowing him to prove himself over a larger time frame... especially compared to cedeno at 2B.  Again, by 2008, this would allow us to determine if Theriot (or I guess cedeno?) is our main at 2B  OR if a top notch free agent is needed there.  Finally, don't ever expect the Cubs to go anywhere w/ Pierre leading off and the Cedenos, neifis, bynums, izturises, etc. batting second!!  Until Pierre is off the team and a REAL lead off hitter can bat in front of Murton, we really have no chance!

Coincidentally, allowing one more rebuilding year (i consider this a rebuilding year even though it was not intended to be because we played SO MANY prospects) would give us an EXCELLENT CHANCE FOR A 2008 WORLD SERIES TITLE, A SWEET 100TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION, ETC.
