Wade Miller Rehab Update

Tonight, Wade Miller made another rehab start for the the Cubs class A minor league team, The Peoria Chiefs.  The Chiefs played the Kane County Cougars at Kane County, so me and my fiance made the 20 minute drive from the  Naperville/Aurora area to go see him pitch.

Some observations:  Miller is not throwing very hard. The "pitch speed" display was not working at Elfstrom Stadium, so I can't tell you exactly how hard Miller was throwing, but he clearly wasn't getting much over 87 or maybe 88 mph.  He retired the first two Cougars he faced in the first inning on a ground out and then a strikeout (looking).  Miller then proceeded to walk the next three hitters to load the bases.  Not good.  He got out of the inning by inducing a short fly ball.

Miller then labored through the 2nd inning, allowing a single, going to a 3-2 count on a couple of hitters, and allowing a long flyball that was maybe 2 feet from going out of the park for a home run.  He got out of that inning unscored upon.  Miller was much better in the 3rd and 4th innings, walking one more batter in those two innings and not allowing another hit.  Miller was removed after the 4th inning, I'm sure due to pitch count.  His line was four innings, allowing no runs on one hit, but the four walks (three in succession) and lack of control overall are of concern to me.  I don't think Miller will be ready to come up to the big club this year.  I hope he proves me wrong, but to me, it appears he has more rehab work to do before he is ready.

As for the other Cubs, rightfielder Jesus Valdez impressed me, despite the fact he went 0 for 4.  He showed good speed and had quality at-bats, fouling off pitches and making Cougars pitchers work.  The Cougars ended up beating the Chiefs by a final score of 4-2.

A few words about the Kane County Cougars should be said as well.  The Cougars do an excellent job of providing family entertainment at a reasonable price.  Parking was free.  Tickets were only $8.00 each for lawn seats.  The lawn seats are actually down the foul lines, so you aren't stuck behind the outfield fence.  The Cougars mascot "Ozzie" liberally dispences frisbees, mush balls and other giveaway type items inbetween innings while riding around the warning track on his ATV.  It's a very family oriented expirience.  They had a fireworks show after the game as well; a good display at that.

Then after the game, every fan received one of the strangest give away items I've seen at a sporting event - loaves of Sara Lee brand bread.  You had a choice of wheat or white as well!  For what ever reason, Sara Lee was sponsoring "bread night" so me and the fiance went home with a loaf of wheat and a loaf of white.  They aren't the small loaves either, they were the regular sized loaves of bread.  Funny stuff.  That's all for now, I'm going to make myself a sandwich.

In other minor league news...
Guzman threw well tonight:

Guzman's start
Over 7 innings he struck out 6, but more importantly gave up only 3 hits, one walk, and no runs.

Also, his arm fell off after the game, so thats fun.

That means we should call him up
and give him tens millions of dollars to sit on the DL.

Switching gears to pitchers not made of glass....
Veal has really been dealing down at Daytona. He threw 6.2 innings of 4 hit, 1 bb, 1 ER ball which lowered his ERA to a stingy 1.20

After the game, Hendry was heard to say "I wonder if the Marlins need any more pitching help"

by CosmicCharlie911 on Aug 6, 2006 12:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Veal is on the fast track
After moving up a level to Daytona, he's continued to succeed and if he keeps it up, will start at West Tenn. next year and possibly could be put on the 40 man next year.

Shaver got pounded last night giving up 6 ER and 11 Hits but his ERA is still at 2.95.

Colvin has cooled off big time after I believe he was hitting like .317 but in this recent slump, has lowered his Avg. to .289.

Harvey's been heating up as well and I'm really hoping he keeps it up. He's got some big time power and has been making much better contact of late.

It's been mentioned before
that Miller probably won't make it to the majors this year.  I guess it's both good and bad.  If he did came up and pitched a few games really well, he'd probably just leave and go to another team.  But if he isn't able to make it we could be able to resign him next year to another $1m deal.  No harm in it.  It's a gamble without much to lose.

Was there a decent crowd at the game?

Also, I assume you're male and engaged to a female.  If that's the case, it's "fiancée" bc it's feminine.

Cougars drew 14,200
for the game - I'm told it was their biggest crowd of the year.  Perfect weather on a Saturday night and maybe Miller throwing added a few fans.  Thanks for the correction on the usage of the word "fiancee."  You assumed corectly.
One day, the dream will come true.

No Harm?
Is he on your 40 man roster?  Is he taking time and resources away from a young player?

No harm my eye.

Malone
Brian--

Thanks for the report on the game-- nice work, man.   What did you observe of Ryne Malone?  He's one of the few position players at Peoria that I like.

by Romero on Aug 6, 2006 2:59 PM CDT reply actions

Ryne Malone

... is a wiry little left-hander who can hit some but had a poor defensive reputation in college.  He played second base in both weekend games, batting leadoff Saturday and #2 Sunday; he did not have a terribly good weekend.  He started well with a single up the middle (almost right at the Cougars' second baseman, but it took a bad hop under the kid's glove); he stole second easily, and scored on Ryan Lilly's bounder down the third base line.  It was all downhill from there in Saturday's game; the opposing starter, a right-hander, retired Malone pretty easily the next 2 times up, then the pair of lefty relievers who closed out the game both struck him out and made him look bad in the process.  In the field, there was a ground single past Malone to his left that I thought he should have reached, but he was slow reacting and didn't come close; he handled the rest of his chances cleanly.
On Sunday, the opposing starter was pretty tough and the Chiefs couldn't get much going in general.  He should have retired Malone all 3 times he faced him, but Malone's one hop liner to the second baseman in the third was misplayed into an error (still an RBI, though).   With a new pitcher on the mound, Malone walked to lead off the ninth; but the reliever threw his first 3 pitches to Malone about 2 feet outside and subsequently managed to load the bases with nobody out (at which point he was yanked), so he wasn't exactly on top of his game.  He handled all of his plays in the field; none looked difficult.
To sum up: in 9 plate appearances, Malone hit the ball with authority once (and that was straight at the second baseman and bounced once before reaching the outfield grass) and drew 1 walk (after getting spotted a 3-0 count with pitches Randall Simon wouldn't have swung at).  Quality right-handers held him under control; lefties toyed with him.  Despite the stolen base, he does not look all that fast.  His arm appears adequate for second base, but he might be lacking a little range.  He's certainly played better than that in other games, but he picked a bad time to have lackluster games: though Oneri Fleita did not show, Chuck Wasserstrom (the Cubs' stats analyst) and Randy Bush (one of Hendry's special assistants; he worked the radar gun while Wasserstrom manned the stopwatch) both attended both weekend games.

thanks!
Wow.

Thanks for such a detailed response about Malone.  Are you at all of the Peoria games?

by Romero on Aug 6, 2006 10:32 PM CDT up reply actions

No, far from all

Most years, I only attend some of the games in Kane County.  Over the years, I've been to some of the other Midwest League parks that aren't too far a drive to watch Cub affiliates (I've been to Peoria in the past, but not since 1989), but I haven't gone anywhere but Kane County and Beloit since the Cubs switched affiliations away from Lansing.
From a travel time point of view, I wish they had moved back to Rockford instead of back to Peoria: since it's all expressway, it's only a bit more driving time than Kane County for me.

Bread night...
Funny you mentioned that. Here in Wichita, we have a KC affiliate and they gave out loaves a week or two ago. It was odd, but it provided my friends and I some entertainment I suppose.

Imagine if they did that at Wrigley..
..with the lake so close and all.  People would open the bread...it would attract the seagulls....Z would fire a fastball and nail a seagull in mid-flight....Randy Johnson style.

Did you ever hear about...
how Jae Kuk Ryu threw a baseball at a bird, I think on purpose. The bird later died. Isn't animal torture one of the signs you look for on a serial killer?

by CosmicCharlie911 on Aug 6, 2006 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions

But serial killers

... don't subsequently cry behind the clubhouse, as Ryu did, when they realize they actually hurt the animal: on the contrary, they enjoy it and do it more, then later move up to bigger targets.

by One of Als Pals on Aug 6, 2006 11:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh I never heard that part of the story
that makes me feel better about Ryu, then.

Blame wikipedia for giving me half the story. Man, I thought that site was so reliable too...

by CosmicCharlie911 on Aug 6, 2006 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions

No, you wouldn't have heard that from the media

The local media did not report that detail; and the rest of the country picked up the story from the local media and didn't do much additional research.    One of the Chicago sports babble radio shows had Buck Rogers, the Daytona GM at the time, on to talk about the incident; but if Buck mentioned Ryu's reaction to his own stupidity at that time, it certainly didn't get around.
Rogers left the Daytona job after the season, partly due to the negative backlash from the osprey incident.  Afterward, he wrote a long email discussing his reasons for leaving; in that email, he recapped the whole sorry episode and described finding Ryu behind the clubhouse.

I attended this weekend's Chiefs/Cougars games

And since I was sitting directly behind someone charting the pitches for the Chiefs, I can tell you that Miller's fastball sat at 85-86 mph, topping at 89.
