September callups started

As seen on cubs.com:

The Chicago Cubs today activated pitchers Scott Eyre and Sean Marshall from the 15-day disabled list. In addition, Chicago activated Wade Miller from the 60-day disabled list and recalled catcher Geovany Soto from Triple-A Iowa.

So, the callups have "sort of" started. Seeing Wade Miller pitch is probably the only thing we have left to look forward to. He has a 62-43 carrer record in 139 starts. If he his healthy, like he has shown in AAA, why is he still not signed to an incentive based contract? I just dont want him to go 4-0 in September and then get signed by the Cards or have to pay much more money for him than we have to. I really want to see Wade in the rotation  next year. What does everyone else think?

No
Wade Miller should not be re-signed, he shouldn't have been signed in the first place.

Why not?
I don't see how signing Miller was a bad move?  What is the harm in bringing in a guy like him on a minor leage deal?

we might as well resign him
at least give him a shot like we did williamson

I don't see the harm in it either.
Let him pitch for a month. If he seems as if he hasn't regained velocity, let him go.

If he has, bring him to spring training on an incentive-laden deal. Why would this be different than bringing in, say, Ted Lilly?

Yep, I for one hope that my
previous Ted Lilly predictions aren't validated!

Why?
The reason we dont have furcal is a net of 3 million dollars per year.  These "inexpensive", "low-risk" guys eat away at the restrictive salary cap the Tribune handicuffs this team with.

FAT JIMMY, STOP SIGNING WORTHLESS PLAYERS TO "LOW RISK" CONTRACTS, SIGN A FEW PLUS PLAYERS AND FILL THE REST OF THE ROSTER WITH PRE-ARBITRATION PLAYERS!!

The Wade Miller
experiment was a bust, but it was a low cost bust at least.

encouraging call-ups
Good to see Eyre and Marshall are reportedly healthy enough to pitch.  And Wade Miller.

I like the Soto call-up.  That gives us three catchers, meaning much more line-up flexibility.  Plus I think Soto has a chance to make the team in 2007.  And Iowa still has two catchers on the roster (Kopitzke and Reyes).

I'm guessing with Iowa in playoff contention, that they might be holding Pie and Ryu with the team until Sept 5th or so.

Miller
I advocated for his signing last year as a low risk, low money, high reward type player. I think the same is still true. I'd have no problem at all with the Cubs signing him to a low base salary and incentive laden contract. If he performs well, he gets more money. If not, you still aren't out that much.

Yabut
The Cubs already have Prior that will be in the mix and Wood that may be in the mix.  Yes they may not be out much money if they sign Miller to an incentive laden contract, but he could prove to A) be a distraction and B) could put the Cubs in a world of trouble if we were to rely on him and he gets injured again.

The Cubs need at least 4 starting pitchers that will give them near 200 innings a piece next year.  Prior is questionable.  There are no guarantees, but a team (and especially next year's Cubs team) can't go into another season with too many questionables.

Wood will be coming back as a reliever...
...if at all.

I know that's the
common knowledge right now on Sept 1, but I'm not so sure it will stay that way.  What if he comes back strong in spring training.  Will it be that easy to deny him a starting spot then?  No one clamors for Howry or Eyre to be starters because they are relievers and always will be, but any success that Wood has (and I hope he has a lot of it whether in a Cubs uni or not) and that clamoring will be there.

Steve Stone didn't particulary like the idea of Wood being a reliever as he didn't think that Wood can handle pitching 3 or 4 times a week on a regular basis.

Not suggesting
that they should sign Miller and call the offseason finished.

He's finally getting to the point where he can actually throw again. If he can do so and continues to build arm strength, he's worth a shot. But in no way shape or form depend on him or pencil him into a rotation slot. Make it a competition and at the very worst, if Wood does return to the rotation, Miller can be a long guy out of the pen.
