Groupies

Hey Ladies... and Guys, your opinion is appreciated here too.

I was given information through a third party that came from a "rabid" female baseball fan.  Now, her opinion (and sanity) are in question here, so I'd like to get your vote on whether or not you guys agree with this.

This "fan" said that women would most enjoy reading a book about baseball "groupies dishing about their guys".

Now, if you've mentioned the word "cheerleaders" within earshot of me, you probably have an idea of how I feel about this, but don't let that influence your decision here before I smack this woman silly with her own pink hat.

So tell me, is this woman right?  Are readers most interested in a clubhouse brothel?

I know...
he doesn't really like him, but maybe I'll ask him anyway.

Did I guess your vote correctly? Or did I guess CCD's vote correctly?

Only to be topped by the write-in vote
Of "Hendry's stint at the Betty Ford Clinic."

by Santos Sorrow @ Bleed Cubbie Blue on Sep 23, 2006 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

So now...
... instead of making every comment about Hendry's weight, you're making every comment about the rumors that he might have a drinking problem.

This stuff isn't funny. It doesn't add to the discussion here. It's just juvenile.

Seriously, when you talk about baseball and acquisitions and changes in an articulate way, I WANT to read your posts. Otherwise, why bother?

by Al Yellon on Sep 23, 2006 4:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Percentage-wise how many of your
are old enough to enough know what that is?

Anyway it's a joke, I only do it because it gets under your skin.  I'll try to refrain (unless someone puts one on a tee for me)

Thank you.
FWIW, you imply that this blog is read only by people under 21. That's absolutely false, as I am sure you know.

by Al Yellon on Sep 23, 2006 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know Al
Maybe its just me, but I find SS's incorrigibility amusing.

by Thelonious on Sep 23, 2006 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Incorrigibility...
... well, ain't that the truth.

by Al Yellon on Sep 23, 2006 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I beg to differ
"This stuff isn't funny"

That, Al, is entirely a matter of opinion.  In your opinion it isn't amusing.  In my opinion it is.  Stastical analysis of your posts here this season indicates that there is a 78% probability that you are wrong about this as well.  Perhaps we should create a poll.

"It doesn't add to the discussion here."

Given that you've made about thirty posts bitching about people making fun of Hendry I'd have to say that it has, in fact, added to the discussion.  Not a very interesting discussion, granted.  We all know you don't like people taking shots at The Gym Teacher on a Booze Cruise.  Give it a rest already.

"It's just juvenile."

So?  Do you have something against the young?  Is all humor juvenille in your opinion, or just directed against a fellow employee?

Let it go. People in the public eye are open to criticisim.  I know you woulld rather people complain about his track record, but that isn't amusing at all - it's just sad.

This is your site Al.  The first admendment applies only to freedom from prosecution, not from being banned from a message board.  If making fun of Crueller Jim is a bannable offense here, then start banning people.  If not, quit whining about it.

by pwhalen on Sep 23, 2006 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions

"Fellow employee"?
Man, I don't know how many times I have to say this.

I DO NOT WORK FOR THE TRIBUNE COMPANY OR THE CUBS. PERIOD.

I have been paid a total of $180 for three articles, ALL of which have been culled from material here.

You say, correctly, "People in the public eye are open to criticisim.  I know you woulld rather people complain about his track record, but that isn't amusing at all - it's just sad."

That's absolutely correct. You want amusement? Fine. A joke or two about weight, maybe that's amusing. Fifty times repeated, it's like sixth grade.

Joking about someone's RUMORED drinking problem isn't funny at all.

I thought maybe we could have some intelligent discourse on the future of the Cubs on this site. In many places, we do.

sinple question Al
will you have to file a w-2 next year for wages paid by the trib or one of their subsidaries?

Also, yoou said nothing to coppnvince me that the comcept of humour is not subjective.  In fact, each successive donut joke is funnier than the llast if only because you keep getting your panties inn a bunch about the whole thing.

by pwhalen on Sep 24, 2006 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions

No, I will not...
... have to file a W-2. Period. I DO NOT WORK FOR THE TRIBUNE OR THE CUBS, PERIOD.

How much more clear can I be?

If you really think the donut jokes are funny, then I hope you enjoy sixth grade this year.

by Al Yellon on Sep 24, 2006 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions

so who
paid you the $180?  The IRS wants to know.  Give us some disclosure Al.

If I'm in the sixth garde, how does it feel to be wrong to a sixth grader about Cedeno, Hill, AND Maddux being traded?

Generaly it's best not to call attention to your stupidity, but whatever works for you.

Hey Al, did you hear the one about the Rabbi, the Priest, and the donut sucking rum soaked general manager?

by pwhalen on Sep 24, 2006 10:18 PM CDT up reply actions

IIRC
Income under a certain threshold doesn't need to be reported, but I could be wrong. Out of curiosity, how does it feel to be belligerent to the proprietor of a blog set up for the purpose of bringing together baseball fans such as yourself, from behind the safety of a keyboard? Does it make you feel big? Just wondering, because stuff like that kinda makes you look like a sixth grader.

by Perkins on Sep 24, 2006 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Anything under $600
per year does not have to be reported per IRS regulations. This is the silliest argument on this board. Just goes to show you that we don't have much baseball to talk about. I do wish the personal attacks on Hendry would stop. What does it add to the discussion anyway. I think certain posters here say things just to see how many reactions they can get.

by LT on Sep 25, 2006 9:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed
I think Hendry's job performance in the last two years or so has given everyone ample fodder for making fun. Bringing personal attacks into it really doesn't add anything.

by Perkins on Sep 25, 2006 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Ok I have to point out the obvious here
Al does not work for the Cubs.  If he was going to "defend" his employer, than he would have raised issue with my option of the Disney vault because he works for ABC.

And frankly, I think this is where our true outrage should lie.  What is the vault?? Why do I have to wait 20 years to buy the Little Mermaid again?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Booze and big belts
I think he's trying to temper the harsh comments about alcoholism and obesity.  I'm going to go out on a limb and say all of us who read this site aren't svelte, trim Kyle Farnsworth or Michelle Grace Liotta clones.  Some people find fat jokes hurtful.  Drinking jokes are "low brow," and though I find many drinking jokes funny, I'm the first to acknowlege they're low brow.

Also, I think there's plenty we can ridicule Hendry for that doesn't go after his weight or any medical problems he's alleged to have.

by Seamer on Sep 25, 2006 12:49 AM CDT up reply actions

No.
I wouldn't want to read that.

I would rather read fun or emotional stories from die-hard baseball fans.

For you Tax mavens...
600-dollars is the line for taxable income. Above that, a 1099 must be issued to the person who received the income.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Sep 25, 2006 9:38 AM CDT reply actions

Thank you.
Clearly, if I made more than $600 from the Vine Line columns, I would get a 1099 form and report it.

Even if that were true (which in 2006, it is not), that still doesn't make me an "employee".
