Rally in front of the Chicago Tribune

I know the issue of who the Cubs should hire as their new manager has been debated here over and over.  My intent is not to beat a dead horse.  I heard yesterday that there was a group of disgruntled Cub fans having a rally in from of the Tribune holding up signs and asking Hendry to hire Joe Girardi as the manager.  Does anyone here know if this is true?  Even if it is true I don't suspect it will sway Hendry's decision making one little bit.  I think he already has his mind made up.  As much as I would like to see Joe get the job I don't think it will happen.  If there really was a rally though I think it is pretty funny.  I am glad that Cub fans are tired of being happy being lovable losers.  It is time for a winner.

That seems a little pointless...
...seeing as how, at the moment, Girardi is still employed by the Marlins.  Shouldn't that little rally wait until he's actually (if ever) available?

Rumor has it that things will move fast
Who knows what's true -- that's why they're called rumors -- but the Marlins supposedly are prepared to cut ties with Girardi and replace him quickly once their season ends.  Things may move quickly on the managerial hiring/firing side, so it's not premature for people who have strong preferences to make them known now.

Well, yeah
I too expect things to move fast if they are going to happen, and I have no problem saying who I like and don't like.

But staging a rally to hire someone who is still under contract is premature, IMO.  Now, if they want to host a rally to ensure Baker is not brought back, that would make sense.

What if Girardi is hired by the Cubs?
I would like to see it personally. But what if he is hired and he does a terrible job? Will these same fans go to the tribune and hold up signs saying that they were wrong? It is easy for us to make decisions when we have no responsibility for them. Just my .02.

Just hire Lou Piniella!!!!
I honestly don't want to hear another WORD about Barry Zito in a CUBS' uniform in 2007!!!!!!!!!!!! WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah,
What a brilliant idea.  Pinella is long time resident of Temple Terrace Florida (a Tampa suburb) and slept walked during his three years with the D-Rays, dreaming all along of receiving a phone call from his old pal King George of the Yankees.  It will be just like Dusty all over again.  A manager who doesn't want to be in Chicago.  Yippee.

Pointless
Andy McPhail will be laughing while peering down with his binoculors from his Tribune Tower office suite.

nope
Andy McPhail is too busy hanging out in New York trying to handle the labor negotiations to actually be at the trib.

I can't make it
to Chicago. Is it alright if I rally in front of the Houston Chronicle instead?

Heh!
That never happened!  WSCR's midday host did a fake "remote" from the front of the Trib Tower.  The people he interviewed who were "attending the rally" were callers!

Thanks
I just heard about it from a guy at work and he seemed to think that it really happened.  I knew I would find out the truth at BCB.

murph
Yep, that was Mike Murphy at WSCR. He actually did a good job of making it sound like he was walking down the street going to the tribune building. When the marching band kicked in and the people on the streets sounded like they were on a telephone, it was obvious. Good bit though.
