Thank You Al

Al, I would really like to thank you for having and maintaining this fantastic cubs blog.  I never go a day without checking this site.  I just love this site, and I am really happy that you take the time to run this site for the rest of us fans.  I really do appreciate it!!  I encourage everyone else to thank Al, because he really does put a lot of work into this site for all of us.  He certainly deserves our thanks.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Much appreciated.
All of YOU help make this site what it is. I only wish I had better baseball to report!

Surely sarcasm...
right?

Anyway, here's my thanks to you Al. I don't think most people realize how much time and effort you put into this site. It's amazing to me how many people bitch and complain like someone's forcing them to visit your site. You put up with a lot, and I certainly appreciate it.

kidding
I figured that this diary started off so warm and fuzzy that someone should sort of cleanse the palate, so to speak.

by Thelonious on Sep 4, 2006 8:02 PM CDT up reply actions

it is laudable that you put so much time and work.
into this blog, especially when the team doesn't cooperate and perform well.

Thanks...
... and what I've tried to explain, many times, is that even when the Cubs suck, there are things to love about the game of baseball, and we can also talk constructively about what might be done to improve the team...

and someday, when they DO win, the victory will be all that much sweeter. If you don't believe me, just ask a Red Sox or White Sox fan.

I agree
as bad as this season has been, I've enjoyed watching a lot of the rookies going through their struggles, and in Rich Hill's case, begin to figure things out after struggling. Others like Marshall and Marmol are still in various stages of struggling, but have hopefully made some progress. O'Malley was a good story while he lasted, and Guzman is somewhat of a good story, even though he's struggled mightily, the mere fact that he's been relatively healthy has been somewhat noteworthy. Also, I follow the minors closely, and this is the first time in a few years that the Cubs have had two very promising pitchers making their way through the minors (as bad as our system is).

And the sheer fact that when the Cubs suck, they suck like they mean it is morbidly entertaining. If they were hovering in limbo, like 7 or 8 games under .500 I would probably be more upset, but the way they constantly reinvent their losing strategies and find new ways to lose every night is, on many levels, good comedy.

Me too
That's why I never come here.

Amen to that
I don't know what I'd do without this site. I find myself going crazy if I have to go more than a day or two without my BCB fix...and normally I don't have an addictive personality. Because of Al and most other people here, I've become a much more knowledgable baseball fan in the span of a little under a year. Thanks, Al.

I'll second that
Al does a great job. I am looking forward to this offseason for all the rumors. Hopefully we will do the Free Agent guessing game again. That was pretty interesting. Thanks for all the time you put in Al!

Gotta agree
I've been reading Al's sites (this one and And Another Thing! before this one) every day for years. Al, I do enjoy your whole approach to watching baseball - there's always something to see, even in a year as miserable as this one. And I appreciate the community you've built here.

Al
A man walks to his seat
He says why are we soft in the middle now
Both in the field and the lineup
The rest of my life is so hard
I need the Cubs to succeed now
We want a shot at redemption
Don't want to end up a loser
In a loser graveyard
Nineteen Oh-eight Oh-eight
Dogs in the daylight
Far away my no-hit star
Mr. Beerbelly (You Hendry)
Get these chumps away from me
You know I don't find this stuff amusing anymore
If you'll bring a world title
I can be your lifelong pal
Al can run it better
And we'll sure all be happy
When you call on Al

A man walks to his seat
He says why'd I spend so much
Got no D or eye at the plate
And wo my nights are so long
Where's the cutoff man?
What if I die here
Who'll be the manager
Now that the manager is
Done Done
He ducked back down the standings
With some roly-poly little slick-glove man
All alone alone
There were incidents and accidents
There were hints and allegations

If you'll bring a world title
I can be your lifelong pal
Al can run it better
And we'll sure all be happy
When you call on Al
Call on Al

A man walks to his seat
It's a seat in a strange world
Maybe it's U.S. Cellular
Maybe it's his first time around
He doesn't speak the language
He sees no OBP
He is a hopeless man
He is surrounded by the mound
The mound
The mound of blown elbows
Tommy Johns and bad obliques
He looks around, around
He sees angels in the architecture
Spinning in infinity
He says Amen! and O Wrigley!

If you'll bring a world title
I can be your lifelong pal
Al can run it better
And we'll sure all be happy
When you call on Al
Call on Al

Wow, a poem!
Seriously, thanks to ALL of you for your kind words. As I have said many times, it's not just me, it's all of YOU who make BCB the great community it has become.

This miserable season will be over soon -- and then, we can spend the winter talking about how to fix this mess. And yes, it can be fixed.

Poem schmoem
It's a song, Al. It's a song.

Well done too.

I also
rely on BCB, DAILY! I never miss a day, Al, this is the greatest thing to happen to a Cubs fan since the playoff years.

Two other notes. I haven't posted as much as I did earlier in the season. I just can't get into all the negative comments and I'm too dumb to turn off the TV and radio and quit on these Cubs. We all need a good season next year to bring back our Karma. Lastly, I was channel surfing and saw Ferris Bueller's Day Off was on....during the bar seen, the Cubs were on TV and Harry was doing play by play. Oh how I missed his voice, it was like an old friend. Here's hoping Al has some good reporting to do in the future, like Harry did in the playoff years. Thanks Al!

Thanks, Al!
For building not just a great place to discuss all things Cubs (and quite a few that are non-Cubs), but also a great community of people who share a passionate interest.  Your work is not unappreciated.

Thanks Al
Great Job Al. I myself check BCB twice a day. I check other baseball blogs and BCB is BY FAR the best one. Keep up the good work and thanks for keeping me entertained....b/c my baseball team sure does not. Thanks Again Al.

Improvements
If we can print out the blogs (as well as the readers comments) that would make BCB even better. Any way to print besides Copy and Paste?

by dkateeb on Sep 5, 2006 9:57 PM CDT reply actions

Hmmm.
Not that I know of, but let me see if I can run this past the web gurus.

Thanks Mr. Al
Not only for BCB, but for letting me know about Diamond Legends...I'm officially hooked! And, my wife has been very supportive, as I have spent countless hours doing my "research."

Hey, my pleasure.
Hope you enjoy Diamond Legends.

For those of you who don't know what this is, it's an online simulation game where you choose a team from all of baseball history and they play a 154-game season. Fun!
