Doesn't anybody play hurt anymore?

While I believe it is prudent to shut down Zambrano for the year, when we are holding down last place in the NL, I think we should be questioning the way the Cubs routinely DL every player who has a hangnail. We started this year with a rotation of Wood/Prior/Maddux/Zambrano and Rusch. We are ending the year with the Iowa Cubs starting rotation.

We are going to finish the year with zero complete games. While I know the pitch count fetishists will approve of this, I can't help but thinking that the mindset of this organization is flawed when it comes to expecting players to play.

I am tired of the bizarre injuries. I am tired of Remlinger's rocking chair, Jones' tear duct, and multiple "oblique" strains. Did Bob Gibson or Nolan Ryan ever have a strained oblique?

I am tired of every time a Cubs pitcher has a hangnail, we bring up some slug from Des Moines to serve as a sacrificial lamb. I am tired of Johnnie Baker and Larry Rothschild trotting out 5 or 6 pichers every game. I want our highly paid players to play.

The Cubs should expect our players to play. Sometimes that means playing through an injury. This is a concept which has disappeared.

If we can't keep our players healthy, then fire the manager, the pitching coach, and the training staff.

Shut down the Des Moines-Chicago shuttle. Shut down the mentality that players will not be expected to play with some pain. I rejoice in the empty seats that have been apparent yesterday and today. In the final analysis, empty seats are the only thing that will catch the attention of the Tribune suits.

I am 42 years old, and have been a Cubs fan since the days of Kessinger/Beckert/Williams/ Hickman/Santo/Banks/Hundley/Phillips/Jenkins. Those players routinely played 150+ games a year.

I am not suggesting that we return to the good old days of these every day players. But I am also damn sick and tired of watching the Iowa Cubs play at Clark and Addison.

To Butress my point.....
Here was a year when 6 Cubs everyday players played 143+ games, and the starting pitchers were also durable...has human physiology changed in 36 years???

It has...
...too many Happy Meals.

one reason
is the emphasis on muscle bulk over the last 20-30 years. too many injuries because of less flexiblity. Big contracts is and the protection of that investment, or in a younger player's case- the prevention of an injury- is another big reason

Doesn't anybody play hurt anymore?

I hope not.

It means what it means
If a player is hurt, he shouldn't play.

I guess there are shades to that
If it's not going to cause further injury a player has to figure out how to play through pain.  Just because he's hurt, IMHO, doesn't give him a free ride to sit.

Yabbut
Do you mean hurt hurt? Or JD Drew hurt? Cause I think there's a difference.

Plus
Weird injuries are a part of baseball, like suicide squeezes and weird facial hair.

Or this....
How about a year when ALL 8 regular starters played 133+ games. Obviously, Derek Lee cannot play with a broken hand. But my point is, we should expect more durabilty than what we are getting...

Yup
Some players do:

Lots of players play hurt...
... including most pitchers, all the time.

Well, except Mark Prior.

And JD Drew
and Scott Podsednik, who said something once alone the lines of "My body is like a Porsche, if all the pistons aren't firing, I don't take it out of the garage."

Tool.

Podsenik
I agree with your assessment of his manhood, but in fairness it was Herm Schneider, the White Sox trainer, who said, "Pods is like a Porsche. Everything has to be running really smooth.  He's a high performance vehicle. He has to have everything running good or he gets a little concerned."

That his trainer basically called him a baby makes the story even better.

I thought I recalled
hearing Scotty Pods himself say that in a clip on the radio, but perhaps I'm misremembering.

Pitchers are babied too much
Back in the day guys like Steve Carlton, Tom Seaver, Jim Palmer, Fergie Jenkins, Rich Reuschel routinenly pitched on three days rest and logged 250 plus innings.  Nowadays we have fragile wusses like Mark Prior who go on the DL with a splinter on the pinkie of their non-pitching hand.  Thank God we still have the Greg Maddux' of the world.  We can blow up all these pitch count experts for my money.

Times have changed.
Pitchers are no longer trained to go many innings. And I think I have written about this before -- pitchers in earlier eras used to not throw their best stuff early, holding some velocity back for later innings. This doesn't happen now -- everyone throws all-out from the first pitch.

I'm not saying now is better than then, only different. It's never going back to the old way, either.

How about this?
Pitchers in the past sometimes threw both games of a doubleheader.
Yes, the game has changed. I think fans are sick of guys who can't stand the pain.
It's the high salaries that have made sissies out of baseball players.
