Harmon Killebrew confirmed a vote for Santo at the end of this article: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070114/SPORTS03/701140365/1003/SPORTS.
Also in this article Bruce Sutter and his relationship with the Patterson boys (Corey and Ben Sutter played on the same team). Also read about Sandberg and the advice Sparky Anderson give to him as a manager: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070113/SPORTS14/701130370/1003/SPORTS.
Sparky was also quoted earlier as saying no manager has any effect on wins and losses, all they can do is put players on the field. He feels managers like LaRussa/Cox/Torre really do not account for the alledged 10 wins per year. He said the Cubs hired a good one in Pinella.

Former Chicago Cub/Cardinal catcher Mike Mahoney has signed to be a player/coach for the Iowa Cubs. At age 34 his (mostly AAA) career is probably over. He is a Des Moines native and owns a house here. His father was a hall of fame high school baseball coach and that's probably the path Mahoney takes.
It was also reported in our paper Barry Zito was in Iowa seeking the advice of Dan Gable, former Iowa wrestling coach and one of the greatest competitors on the planet. Zito is traveling the country talking to a few sport legends on how to consistently win over a long period of time. (I think we have a few who should do this.)

Lastly is Nate McLouth or Chris McDuffy really a choice as Phil Rogers suggests? Isn't this a step backward instead of forward?
