Chandlers make offer to buy trib

Well, here we go. Apparently they will become majority owners if the offer is accepted.

I have absolutely no idea what will happen to the Cubs if this deal happens.

"CHICAGO (AP) -- Tribune Co.'s largest shareholder offered to buy the struggling media conglomerate and spin off its broadcast division in a deal valued at $7.6 billion.

The bid by the Chandler family, which owns 20 percent of Tribune stock, was disclosed Thursday morning in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission."

I don't think..
... anyone knows what will happen if this bid is accepted.

Plus, this isn't something that can or will happen overnight.

This offer sucks
4.5 percent above current price but much of that in
spinoff stock? I can't see the institutional investors who will
be the ones to decide if it goes to a fight, going for that.
I also love the part where they claim it is really an 18% premium
because the Chandler push to put the company on the market
increased the price. Nope it less than 5% and a bad offer
The Burkle offer is even more ridiculous.
I love the ballpark. I love the city. I love the fans. Aside from how we've played this year, there's nothing not to like about Chicago." Greg Maddux 7/29/06

Also
Eli Broad and Ron Burkle also made a bid for the Tribune.  According to the LA Times, the key phrase as far as we're concerned is that they "would leave Tribune intact."  The Chandlers would spin off various parts of the Tribune empire.  The Cubs aren't specifically mentioned as a spin-off for the Chandlers, but you'd have to think they would be.
