Change to batting practice jersey

Every couple of years, Majestic changes the design of the batting practice jerseys. The new ones can be seen here. Putting away my feelings on a single template being applied to 30 MLB teams, I'm glad to see that the Cubs appear to be returning their BP jersey to a Cubbie blue, instead of the navy they've favored recently. I am not excited about the white-and-red side panels on the jersey, but I think it certainly looks better than the one it's replacing, which quite noticeably does not match the Cubs' hats.

I also like that the names being kept off of the jersey, which is something that a lot of teams that have names on all of their jerseys are planning to do with their batting practice jersey.

count me...

... as one who really liked the old BP jerseys. I thought the navy looked great for both the jersey and cap. I don't like the multi-tone design of the new jerseys and think the white sides look pretty ugly.

Why?

Is there something in the Chicago Cubs charter from the 1800's that said that the Cubs blue had to be a certain shade of blue? I mean navy is blue, is it not? I'm not a historian of Cubs uniforms but something tells me that over the years, there have been different shades of blue used.

I'm not trying to get into a pissing match, people like certain jerseys. I happened to really like the navy BP jerseys and hats and felt that the alternate blue jersey would have looked much better had it been the navy shade instead of the shade that it is.

True enough.

But since 1957, the basic Cub uniform has been the same, with the same color scheme. To add a BP jersey and cap with different colors, to me, was only for the purpose of selling souvenir jerseys.

Plus, I personally didn't care for the darker color. I know you do, and others do. It's a personal preference.

"The shade that is is" is the famous "Cubbie Blue". I'm sure it makes me less of a fan, but I've always wished it were a darker shade. That royal blue (or whatever) is OK on its own, but when combined with bright red and white, it's just a wee bit garish.

I liked the the navy shirts and hats very much.

i agree

the BP jerseys used to be very nice. if you ignore tradition, they are probably the most aesthetically pleasing of all the current cubs jerseys.

the new bp jerseys look like they should be worn by a jockey, not a baseball player.

To get the full effect,

you would have to scroll down to the hideous elastic waistband. THAT, my friend, is what was wrong with them.

Well, that road jersey was different

Red trim and no air-holes -- this was a BP jersey that was used during the 80s/early 90s, and so was presumably worn with whatever pants the Cubs were wearing that day.

True.

It looks very much the same as the road jersey from the early 80's, though. (The road jersey, now that I think about it, had a sleeve patch. The BP jersey doesn't.)

I used to have that one

It was made of the most unnatural fibers I've ever worn. Seriously, had I been old enough to smoke, and not against smoking, and a smoker, I would struck matches on it to light my cigarette.

And the new ones are going to make some players look like big fat warblers (or whatever, I'm no icthyologist) because of that white area on the sides.

Home/Away

The Yankees and Blue Jays only have a minor difference: the side panels are white at home and gray on the road. The Phillies (and Red Sox) apparently opted to go with completely different jerseys based on where they were playing; not entirely sure why. The Tigers have orange panels on their road jerseys only because they only wear Orange as a color on the road.

Navy blue

is for the Bears. The lighter blue is for the Cubs. Can't some tradition be upheld? There was NO reason for the introduction of the 'second' blue. (Except, as Al said -- to sell more product.) Good to see the dark blue tops vanish.

I wish we had either the cubby face from the seventies or the old standing bear with bat from the teens. those are classy! the walking bear is too complicated, not bold enough, imho.

agree with keith about the diamondbacks, maybe they are going away from the god awefull teal and purple nonsense that made theirs the ugliest uniform in team sports period.

(i rooted against them in their WS win because of their horrible duds)
