Geographic Fan Distribution

(Al posted this a really long time ago (I think on his old site), but a recent school project led me to look it up again.)

Have you ever wondered just how widespread Cubs fandom really is?  Geographically speaking, we're everywhere, as evidenced by BCB's readership.  But wouldn't it be nice to be able to look at a map and see how many Cubs fans live in what part of the country?

Such a map actually exists, provided by the CommonConsensus Project.  Check it out here:
http://www.commoncensus.org/sports.php

They've done this for each sport, but I'm interested in the baseball map.  Some interesting things to note:

  • The Braves have the largest geographic spread of fans
  • The Cubs seem to have a broader fan base around Chicago than do the White Sox
  • Dots of Cubs fans show up all over the map; In any given area, Cubs fans seem to be at least #5 in terms of the number of fans in a geographic area
  • People in the western US don't like baseball, apparently
  • You can contribute to the statistics by completing the poll data.

The data also helps with the sister project.  That project attempts to draw borders as citizens view them, rather than as they are drawn on maps.  Read about it at the site, where they describe it better.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

I live in Alaska. The farthest north cubs fan club was founded by a friend of mine in Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska by a friend of mine.

    Another Alaskan
I think that makes 4 of us.  I don't live there now, but it is still where I maintain my residency.

It's funny that you posted this today
I actually was looking at the site in regards to football. I was curious as to where exactly the dividing line between Bears and Colts fans existed. It is a neat site and good way to get a rough idea of where a team's fan base is what their area of influence is.

If the map were drawn according to the Blackout
zones for MLB TV on the net then the Cubs would reach to Jackson Hole Wyoming and the Yankees would cover the earth.

    No...
... if the map were drawn to the MLB blackout boundaries, it would look something like this:

    Neither do I.
That's why I thought it would make a perfect map of MLB's broadcast blackout areas.

    Cub fans
when I am walking down the street here wearing something Cubs I almost always get a "Go Cubs" from someone passing by

its great, Cub fans are so friendly

    keeping mediocrity at bay

    that same shirt
I had on Saturday (it's like my coat) has gotten me a lot of greif from everyone.

However the Cub fans just smile and say 'Go Cubs', it's hard being on the South Side, but being Irish and on the south side, I fit in, therefore, it's home.
