Movie called Simon Birch

I saw a movie on WGN last Thursday night that I really enjoyed. The name of the movie was Simon Birch. I'm sure it's an old movie, but I had not seen it before. It was a touching movie about friendship with a little baseball mixed in.

Simon had a good friend named Joe. Joe's mom happens to get killed by a foul ball off the bat of Simon in a Pee Wee league game.

Simon is kid who physically handicapped and his most-prized possession is a set a baseball cards. Has anyone else seen this movie? Is this a good movie or am I just a sentimental old fool?

Based on the book...
"A Prayer for Owen Meany"

Actually like the movie more than the book - a rarity for me. The book was good, but got long winded at times about issues not concerning the main storyline of the book.

Glad you liked the film - it's one of our family favorites.

At least we didn't sign Batista...

I'll take the book
One of my all-time favorites.

Serious?
I am shocked that you liked the movie better than the book.  The book is an all-time classic, and I thought the movie changed things around so drastically, it's pretty poor.

Definitely read the book before seeing the movie.  Owen is such a special character, you want to read about him and visualize him yourself before watching the movie.

Yep - college educated and everything...
and I still like the movie more than the book. That said, I still liked the book, but when asked if I like one more than the other - in this case I liked the movie.

My faults with the book are more in the lack of editing. There are sections of the book that meander and leave the base storyline (a very good one) and characters too often.

At least we didn't sign Batista...

I loved it...
It was very sad, but I really enjoyed it.  I watched part of it again last week on WGN waiting for the Bears game to start.  I think we'd all be a lot better off if we thought more like that little guy did.
The dumbest people I know are those who know it all.

Have never...
... read this, nor seen the movie. But based on these comments, I'm putting it on the list. Thanks!

It's definately worth the read
before seeing the movie. Well done movie that takes only the necessary liberties with the book.

The actor was quite a jerk as a child.
My girlfriend went to gradeschool/highschool in Elmhurst with the boy who plays Simon Birch. She said he ran over lots of people with his "scooter" and was just generally mean with everyone.

I am disappointed
to hear that the actor was a jerk as a child. He probably most definitely was not a Cubbie Fan.

According to...
... that kid's IMDB biography, he is now attending MIT.
