Starting rotation shakedown

What happens to the Cubs if Mark Prior and Wade Miller are both healthy this year?  Yeah they could both be injured but what if they're not?  If Wade Miller is healthy he is a clear number 3 and easily better than marquis, could be better than Lilly.  Then, what happens in 2008 when sean marshall, veal and gallagher are ready?  Do you think the cubs are just banking on not resigning prior?  that would be a horrible decision in my mind, just ask the Blue Jays after they let Chris Carpenter walk after injuries.  Does this mean we dont resign Z because we have young reinforcements coming?  I say Hendry should not even allow this to be a problem, he should trade pitching prospects to the reds for Ken Griffey, Jr.  The perfect player to keep center warm for Pie, and if he's injured, then it would be a great time to call Pie up.  That's just one option though, I would give a grand to anyone who could predict what the Cubs starting rotation would be opening day 2008.

No to Griffey
Griffey is not a suitable choice for these Cubs. I really don't have a read on this center field option but reading what Pinella has done with other rookies I won't be surprised to see Pie start the season in the bigs. For now, I think Jones is our man. As far as pitching goes, having too much pitching is far better than what we saw last year. I really hope this is a problem because that means Prior is healthy. One starter will go to the pen and be a swing man. The young guys will go to Des Moines. The right trade during spring training may bring a trade we need and we sacrifice a prospect. As far a Z goes, he should and would be signed long term. He has become the franchise player for this organization. There should never be a thought of him playing any place else.

Agreed
Lock up Z (can't we find a better nickname for him?). He is a franchise player. Don't care about the cost. If we'd done the same with Maddux, who knows what might have happened in the 90's.

i would love nothing more
than to read a headline tomorrow that says, cubs sign zambrano to 7 year deal, even if they were paying him 150 million dollars.  Im wondering though, if the cubs dont see that as a necessary expense with lilly, marquis and hill under control for a little while and veal, gallagher and marshall waiting to come up for good

You have brough this up before...
and I have agreed that Z needs a better nickname.  'Z' is not unique.  They call Barry Zito 'Z' too. I think you and I should force everyone to help us come up with a good nickname for every starting player. Maybe we should start a diary about this one day and talk about several players(Lee needs a nickname).  I think the only guy that ever got a good nickname was Glendon Rusch, and I believe that was thanks to Julie's husband.

Plus, right now we have plenty of time.  There's no Cubs news at all. It can't be that hard to come up with nicknames for players we know well(although all I have is action potential info in my head right now).

Bat-Girl calls Johan 'El Presidente'.  Z needs to have a good nickname.

Nickname
Zambrano was called "El Tortuga" by some of his Spanish-speaking teammates.  His stocky build and profile makes him look a little like a tortoise.

Angel Guzman said he was like his father last year.  Z didn't like that, and said he would be fine as an older brother.  But "hermano" isn't much of a nickname.

It seems like somebody (an announcer) also has referred to him as "the bull."

How about just "Big Z"?

True
The Bull does fit him, but a lot of players had that one, including Leon Durham. "El Tortuga," on the other hand, is unique. I love it. Any idea how we could popularize it?

Nicknames today generally lack any kind of creativity. Look at the NFL: "LJ" is now the one nickname I can think of. Ugh.

Griffey
Currently rehabbing a broken hand suffered in some off-the-field incident that the team refused to disclose.

No, I'm good on him, thanks.

Even if healthy, how long before he either ran full force into the bricks, or jumped up and somehow got his hand mangled in the basket?

That guy is a walking injury. He's the baseball's version of Grant Hill. Or maybe Hill is the basketball's Griffey.

Story about...
... filming of "Rookie of the Year".

The scene in which Henry, the kid, comes in from the bullpen for the first time was shot between games of a doubleheader vs. the Cardinals on September 19, 1992.

Stern, the director, told the crowd to chant "HENRY! HENRY!" as he came in from the bullpen. So we did this three or four times till he got enough takes.

Then the second game started. Ken Patterson, who was mostly a middle reliever, started the game. He got absolutely pounded. When Jim Lefebvre finally came to get him, everyone started yelling "HENRY! HENRY!" One of the funniest moments ever at Wrigley Field.

Here is the game in question.

by Al on Jan 7, 2007 10:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I watched...
"Legally Blonde" yesterday.  Maybe we should sign Elle. Just kidding.

I bet that kid is better than Marquis, and he's better than Prior and Miller because they usually don't pitch enough to prove that wrong.  I wish they did.

As I have said, along with many others, if Prior is healthy we will be the best team in baseball.  If Prior and Miller are healthy we might win the World Series.

I generally, try to keep it positive here...
But I have to say, this is the kind of thinking that gets GMs fired. First of all, you don't trade players in baseball, you trade contracts. There is no one that is a good match on the Cubs roster that you could do a Griffey deal with. And even if there was, the deal doesn't make baseball sense. At all. You block a high-end prospect at best, and at worst force Pie into playing anyway if Griffey comes up lame. With a wasted 30+ million sitting on your books for the trouble.

To answer your question about Prior, you can never have too much pitching. I'm down on him myself, but he's young and relatively cheap, so I'd hang on for a while longer. If not, Prior and Jones to Atlanta for the other Jones makes a lot of sense. Perhaps Prior and cash to Washington for Felipe Lopez. Or maybe to Toronto for Rios, who I'd happily relegate Murton to 4th OF status for. I've got a couple of other ideas, but you get the gist.

And to answer you question about young pitching and Z..well, if you can afford him, you sign him. If you can't, you don't. Just remember it's a GMs primary job to put the most competitive team on the field (under budget), not to turn millionaires into multi-millionares.

True, but...
... there's also the theory, often put into practice, that some deals are made to dump contracts. Maybe that's what he was talking about.

by Al on Jan 8, 2007 8:47 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No, I meant baseball....
The vast majority of baseball deals are done with comparable salaries involved. Often, the cash being sent back with a player is often to balance the money out, not because the new team can't afford it.  I mean sure, you get some Yankee-esque deal here and there, where it a contract dump, or high ceiling talent for high price MLB players, but most deals really are as much an economical match as a talent one.

by Damen Jackson on Jan 8, 2007 10:20 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

For some reason, I have this strange thought:
Prior has floundered the last few years when the Cubs have really needed him most, and really tried to build their starting rotation around he and Kerry Wood.  Now, as we have documented, we seem to have (gulp...do I dare say this?) more than enough starting pitching.  Therefore, my prediction is as follows: since the pressure might be somewhat off of Prior, since he is kind of an "anything we get is a bonus" type of player now, I have a strange feeling that he is going to get healthy and be a factor on this year's team.  I can't say he is going to revert back to 2003 form.  But something tells me that, due to the fact that he is not really needed or being counted on, he will get healthy and contribute.  Only time will tell, but stay tuned.

By the way, I am making the same prediction for Aramis Ramirez.  With D-Lee back healthy and Soriano in the lineup as well, I'm predicting a big year for Aramis "Great Player as long as I'm not 'The Man'" Ramirez.

Predict? Sure.....
CUBS Rotation in 2008
  1. Carlos Zambrano
  2. Rich Hill
  3. Ted Lilly
  4. Wade Miller
  5. Sean Gallagher*
*Prior still a question to make Spring Training 2008.

To me, it seems that Sean Gallagher may be the closest of the three above average pitching prospects (along with Veal and Pawelek) to being MLB ready. He has a 5 pitch repetoire (fastball, slider, curve, change and splitter). I think Veal will either be a mid-season call up in '08....or traded.

One can never have
too much starting pitching.  I'm glad that the Cubs have the depth that they do.  To begin the season, unless an injury or something unexpected happens, I thnk we can assume that Z, Lilly, and Hill have spots wrapped up.  That leaves Miller, Prior, and Marquis to battle for 2 spots.  Wood, while we all know is starting the season as a reliver, will, IMHO, at some point become a factor in the starting rotation.  Marshall deserves to get some consideration as well, though I think that ultimately he will end up at AAA.

Anyway, I think talent wins out.  If healthy, Prior and Miller are the final 2 spots with Marquis working out of the bullpen.

I would never trade prospects for Griffey.  If he were in another division, I would consider it, but a trade for Griffey would be at most a 2 year thing and the Cubs would have to face the prospects they traded for long after that.  If, let's say Vernon Wells were on the Reds I would trade prospects for him, but Griffey no.

As for 2008 and beyond, let's wait to get the knowledge from 2007 first.  If they need to trade some players, I'm sure they will.  Hopefully, players like Lilly, Prior, and Marquis will have value to make them tradeable.  Lock up Z now though.  In terms of durability, talent, and age, he's one of the top 5 most valuable pitchers in all of baseball.

the Cubs would have made Z an offer before the Giants made their offer to Zito. Now the Zito signing dictates the value of Zambrano....Not that he doesn't deserve a fat contract.

do you really think
that the cubs would go with that practice that the best talent wins?  I sure hope they do, but if Wade Miller is healthy I think he is clearly better than Jason Marquis, and probably Ted Lilly as well.  His Career numbers are like a 4.00 ERA and he is something like 62-45, and he didnt even pitch all that bad last year for us as he was still rehabbing while pitching at Wrigley, something like 4.57 ERA and 20 k's in 21 innigs.  I would LOVE it if the cubs do as you think, but i just cannot see them putting Marquis in the bullpen after paying him that much...i guess maybe in this market 7 mil is not too much to bench but I just cant see it.  I sure hope you are right though.

re: do you really think
Hear, hear...I'm picking Miller as the sleeper success of the '07 rotation. You are correct, kylejo, he's 62-45 in his career with a 4.000 ERA. I also agree that the Cubs didn't spend that much on Marquis to put him in the bullpen. That's why I see the opening day rotation as:
  1. Big Z, er, El Tortuga
  2. Lilly
  3. Marquis
  4. Hill
  5. Miller
Even though Miller didn't have much success last year, I thought his control was relatively acceptable for a guy who been out of the game as long as he had. If he stays healthy, I think he'd be a great number five.

Woo Hoo!
I'm glad there's lots of love for Miller out there!  Miller can be a top of the rotation starter.  He's had only 1 injury and there's no reason to belive he's not past it.

As for Marquis in the bullpen ... I don't think that Prior will be healthy, so Marquis will be in the rotation defacto.  Even if Prior is healthy, everyone, including Marquis himself, has recognized that there is something to be fixed.  I could see the Cubs explaining that Marquis will start out in the bullpen until he gets his kinks worked out.

However, I would be happy beyond happy to think that the Cubs would have 6 quality starters on thier team.

by thisteamisajoke on Jan 8, 2007 10:37 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Eh, I don't know...
"Big Z" works for me. Zito's a good pitcher, but I don't see how anyone could call him "big."

That said, "El Tortuga" does have a nice ring to it. "Tortuga" sounds reminiscent of the word "torture" -- as in, "Yeah, 'El Tortuga' really put the screws to opposing hitters today, scattering two hits over seven and two-thirds innings and leading the Cubs to a 6-0 victory over the last-place Cardinals."

(Sorry, got a little carried away with that example there.)

Plus, "El Tortuga" would teach English-speaking baseball fans everywhere a new Spanish word. I usually rely on my daughter's episodes of "Dora the Explorer" for that.

OK, OK, I'm going to contradict myself now and say we should definitely go with "El Tortuga."

You are a prick.
I personally think he has a point, and the whole idea of this posting board is to throw out questions and have discussions.

Just because people are not smart enough for you doesn't give you the right to bash them.  If you disagree, just make a comment as to why.

And nobody appreciates your insults regarding posts being "worthy".  Again, if someone has baseball related questions or comments it IS worthy.  Not all of us know a great deal about baseball, and are here to ask questions.

Oh, and by the way... sorry I called you a prick.  As you can see, simply apologizing for an insult after the fact does NOT make it OK.

Why don't you tone it down.  We all realize you know a lot more about baseball than the rest of us.  Good for you.  It doesn't give you the right to act like a jerk.

This is a general comment...
... not directed at either one of you specifically.

It's OK to have strong opinions here, and everyone has them and expresses them, generally well.

It is NOT OK to call people pricks, or asses, or insult them, or whatever. There's plenty of ways to make your point without name-calling. That's all I ask.

Thanks.

by Al on Jan 9, 2007 1:37 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Understood.
The comment "you are a prick" was only meant to highlight how his calling someone else a "dick" is a crappy thing to do.

I was trying to make an analogy of the situation.

I am not trying to be "angry Nickler".  I still do like Rondell, although I was always a much bigger fan of Kenny Lofton, who we STILL didn't get although he would have been perfect.

I get grumpy when people on the site act all superior and tell others they are dumb because of questions they ask or proposals they make.  We are not all baseball experts.

So as long as the mediocrity amongst us are not insulted for being "stupid" (and as long as war vets are not insulted), I am pretty cool.

Wait...
How did I miss out on this today? I would have loved to be the cause of all the name-calling by doing myself. Following that, I would have loved to be made fun of in a sarcastic way. Seriously, it's the only reason I come to this site.

And although the above statement is sarcastic, it's really not.

Wait, wait, wait...
Let's all take a deep breath.

Look, if T-Drunk doesn't want girls in his club, I don't want to be a part of it, either.

Let's go start our own club. It will be "Only the cool kids" Club. I've always wanted to be in that club. I don't know about it being at the salon, but I'm sure we can find somewhere that works out.

im open to criticism
and i did write the article on the fly but i thought i made sense and thought out my opinions, I would be interested in what you thought was moronic about it though?

Pay no
attention to him. He's terminally rude. Indeed, he goes about this site insulting people. Al - can you deal with this?

Well.
He did apologize for his insult. I haven't seen others... if you have, let me know.

true
He did apologize - so I give him credit. I do remember him insulting one other person on another diary and also giving me a hard time.

I'll apologize to you...
when you apologize for annoying me.

I don't really think I'm "terminally" rude (whatever that means). I'm occasionally rude, and for that I'm occasionally sorry.

As for kylejo, I only called it moronic (which was too strong of language) when I didn't realize that he wrote the article. In truth, I only had a few criticisms and some disagreements, and it wasn't actually "moronic". I don't really see how that is your business anyway (because it isn't).

thanks dude
no worries here, ha i can see how incredibly idiotic it would look if i did just come across an article, steal its title, and paraphrase everything in it...obviously not everyone agrees on everything and i really could care less if people disagree with me, mr. drunk didnt do anything wrong.  Check it out folks, despite any bad signings, wasted money, etc. spring training is quickly approaching and i for one am incredibly excited.

Yeah seriously
It wasn't a bad article. I was just pissed off that you "copied it" and then "slightly" overstated my disagreements.

Actually, my only problems with it was that I don't think we should sign Griffey jr. and I really don't think the cubs should try to sign Z for the amount of money he's going to want. I think we should try to trade him this season to the yankees for philip hughes and company.

just wondering
what would you want to do with center field?  I really think that Grif would be a good addition if the Reds ate some of his contract, at the same time id love to see pie have a great spring and win the job, but our options of soriano and jones dont seem too attractive to say the least.

I guess...
he might be a good addition if the reds ate some of his contract, but at this point, I would be happiest if the Cubs just kept Jones. We have him under contract, and it would be foolish to dump his cheap salary.

KG jr. is just TOO injury prone for the cubs to throw any talent at the reds to get. He's had injury problems almost every season, and he's getting pretty old. At this point, Jones probably outproduces KG jr.

If the cubs went after any Red player, I would actually want Adam Dunn. I know oldschool thinkers hate him due to his low BA and terrible fielding prowess, but he's still pretty young and he's an OBP machine, which is exactly what the cubs need.

Rios would be decent, I suppose. I've heard talk of him recently.
