Rockies-Padres 1 game playoff diary

Probably not a of ton interest, but figured I'd start one.

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/y2007/gd.html?2007_10_01_sdnmlb_colmlb_1

On the off chance one of these two teams beats the Phillies, I think I'm rooting for the Rockies here. Still a lot of bad memories with the Padres.

And the Rockies are up 2-0, going into the top of the second.

Fear
I hate the Dodgers so much that I always root for the Rockies (unless they're playing the Cubs), but I am afraid of this team.  This lineup is scary good! I can't root for the Padres, though; 1984 wasn't that long ago.
Since I left, I've always missed Chicago but never as much as I do right now!

Lot of action in this game, anyway, as there is in most Coors Field games.

I'm still rooting for SD. Colorado's offense scares me.

Man Tulowitikti is so clutch
I hope he wins ROY.  He has really helped his team on offense and defense.  He comes up in big situations and doesn't just pad his stats with solo HRs in meaningless games.  He's already one of the best defensive shortstops.  I don't see anyone that competes with him for ROY.

by IllinoisCubs on Oct 1, 2007 8:48 PM CDT reply actions

I agree.
He gets my vote. Braun hit a lot of HR and hit for a high average, but his defense is atrocious, which is why he spent the first six weeks of the season in Triple-A.

Tulowitzki is a complete player.

LaTroy in for Colo!!
a villian for Cubs 04 stalled playoff drive!! just got 2 out in 7th guess he's long reliever or 7th-8th inning guy for Rockies?? can't decide I think SD is scarier opponent with their park and pitching...would like to avenge '84 sure but that's ancient history...take it one series at a time, I think that it's harder to win somehow in SD but Colo. is supposed to screw up pitchers, so we'll see...flip a coin.

Would've been nice...

Game 1 of the NL Division Series between the Cubs and Diamondbacks will start at 9:07 p.m. CT on Wednesday. Dick Stockton and former big league pitcher Ron Darling will handle the play-by-play on TBS. by sanantonecub on Oct 1, 2007 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions

why the heck does Barrett NOT have his
facemask off in that situation?  c'mon, catching 101-see the ball!

by LuisSalazar on Oct 1, 2007 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions

And this.............
........surprises you why?

How fitting Barrett closes out another team's season by not coming up with a throw to the plate?!?!

Granted, it was a tough hop, but he's simply awful.  In fact, I'm shocked he blocked the plate as well as he did.  He's learned something since leaving Chicago.

by tville on Oct 1, 2007 11:53 PM CDT up reply actions

They actually teach them to keep
the mask on in those situations today.  Years ago, you always saw a catcher throw his mask away if there was going to be a play at the plate, but most keep it on now.

Anyway, I think Barrett is a terrible catcher, but that throw was a short hop and impossible to handle.  He did do an excellent job blocking the plate and actually tagged the guy out if the umpire had a clue.

"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel

by MPH73 on Oct 2, 2007 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Let's give credit though....
...he blocked the plate and prevented the run from scoring. That ump took his sweet time with the signal which tells me he didn't really kow what to do, he just made the call by the ball on the ground.

Barrett has to take SOME type of cue from the ump, but if had had grabbaed the ball and tagged Holliday before looking at the ump (which YES, he should have done) there's no telling what type of tlak would be going on now: Barrett successfuly prevented him from scoring, and the ump was out of position to make his call.

Besides the obvious - Go Irish.

Z. He doesn't need an exclamtion point. He is one.

He didn't get the dish
That was a tough throw for any catcher to handle, but it is weird that Barrett kept his mask on. He mishandled the ball because he was trying to block the plate. Looks like he felt the runner coming, knew the runner beat the throw and stuck the leg out. That's a tough call to lose on; I'm so glad the Cubs clinched on Friday.

by montanacubby on Oct 1, 2007 11:31 PM CDT reply actions

As the "great" AJ Pierzynski (and those who were complicit with the play and/or defended the aftermath) showed us two years ago in Game 2 of the ALCS, it is entirely acceptible to cheat to win.

Reality is what you can sell, and last night the Rockies sold it as he touched home plate.

Ergo, he touched home plate.
