2008 Roster projections...
I stumbled across an interesting write-up from RotoWorld this morning, and thought I'd pass it along:
http://www.rotoworld.com/content/features/column.aspx?sport=MLB&columnid=2&articleid=29153
I forward this purely for review, without judgment...okay, maybe just one. If I'm trading high-end prospects, why in god's name would it be for Tejada? Okay, I'm done. Any thoughts about this?

No way
This would be a bad move. We would be getting older by aquiring Gordon and Tejada and giving up quality, and younger players.

DeRosa and Marmol are guys the Cubs should hang onto, along w/ Z, Lilly, Howry, Soriano, Lee and ARam...

How do people like this get a job
Hey I would like to get Tejada, but for Pie, Marmol to be in the package, NO thanks. I would offer Marshall and Theriot or Gallagher and Theriot.

SS
Possibilities:
- Renteria for Sean Marshall and a PTBNL.
- Bill Hall for ?
- Luis Castillo for 2B, moving DeRo to SS.
- ST competition between Riot and Cedeno.
- Adam Everett, if non-tendered. Worse OPS, better glove.
- Other ideas?

re: SS
- This is my choice, but we might need to include a little more than Marshall and a PTBNL. I'd like to work Eric Patterson into this trade, somehow.
- Possibly, but I wouldn't count on the brewers trading within the division (especially with their likely rivals next season).
- DeRosa is too weak at SS. Castillo is not worth weakening our infield defense.
- Ryan Theriot is not a qualified starting shortstop. Cedeno probably isn't either, but his age, greater defensive potential, and ability to hit for more power gives him a decidedly large edge on Theriot. Theriot should remain valuable to this team as a supersub.
- I think Everett is actually somewhat overrated defensively, and he has been one of the largest offenders of negative VORP in baseball over the past few years. Don't get me wrong: he IS an extremely good defensive shortstop, and would be a major improvement over the IzTheriot combo we used this year. But his defense doesn't compensate enough for his terrible offense. He'd be a little better than Theriot if he could match his career best of 39 FRAR with a WARP1 near 4 in 2006, but I doubt it. Based on his career, those impressive defensive numbers that led to his career high in WARP1 look pretty flukey.

Renteria
The Cubs need to add power in the lineup, with Lee's and Jones' power numbers down.. Theriot's .346 slugging % just isn't going to hack it, but I think he'd be a nice utility guy and could start @ 2b versus lefties, when DeRo plays RF.

Agreed
By all accounts, he's excellent defensively, but these types of players are common enough that I definitely wouldn't have gone after Barney that early in the draft.

pretty ridiculous article
DeRosa probably won't get dealt, and he certainly won't be dealt for Flash freaking Gordon.
Horacio Ramirez?

The Angels brought up Erick Aybar at 2nd, but he's the future at short with Wood at 3rd, Kendrick at 2nd and Morales at 1st. Cabrera could be expendable. Not really sure what they need or what they would ask for (sound like they might have a new GM), but it might be worth kicking the tires to find out.

I hate his game...
I know I'm going to get flamed for this one, but I'll say it. I've got MAYBE a half-dozen players that I would make serious inquiries about if I were the Cubs. No wishful thinking, and mindful of their transitional situation. And if I couldn't pluck one of these guys, I'd look to spend my money on pitching, and/or wait till the deadline next year to see what I can get.
Edgar Renteria
Bobby Abreu
Brian Roberts
Kosuku Fukudome
Austin Kearns
Wilson Betemit
And probably in that order. I've no problem with position switches for Theriot (2nd), or DeRosa (RF), so that's me. And I'm very interested to see whether McPhail will shed everything and start from scratch, so I'd personally watching that Baltimore situation closely this winter.

Why is slick fielder a dirty word?
by Nibbles on Oct 16, 2007 12:28 PM CDT 0 recs
First of all...
But Barney up until this point looks like the sort of Cubs prospect that has a much better name than he does talent level (see Buck Coats, Rocky Cherry.) Nothing to say that he WON'T become something, but a .715 OPS for a guy drafted out of college in low A isn't great.
His 1.156 OPS at rookie ball (small sample concerns abound) is freakin' awesome, though.
