2008 Roster projections...

I stumbled across an interesting write-up from RotoWorld this morning, and thought I'd pass it along:

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/features/column.aspx?sport=MLB&columnid=2&articleid=29153

I forward this purely for review, without judgment...okay, maybe just one. If I'm trading high-end prospects, why in god's name would it be for Tejada? Okay, I'm done. Any thoughts about this?

i stopped here
Cubs have pursued Miguel Tejada before and should do so again. Felix Pie, Carlos Marmol and Ronny Cedeno for Tejada and Hayden Penn would be a very high price to pay, but GM Jim Hendry might need to gamble in order to keep his job.

I stopped
as soon as Marmol was mentioned as trade bait.  People get paid to come up with this garbage?

I'd rather pick up Andruw Jones
than deal Marmol & Pie for Tejada.

Neither of those...

this guy is a moron, and should be banned from ever writing anything about baseball again in his life.

I like how...
...the Cubs magically pick up Brady Clark and Horacio Ramirez in this scenario. Yes, exactly what the Cubs need -- a backup center fielder and a mediocre fifth-day starter. Because we don't already have Jones, Pie, Fuld and Pagan.

No way
we're getting rid of Marmol and DeRosa. DeRosa IMO, was a three way winner for the CUBS MVP. (DeRosa, Theriot, and Lilly)

This would be a bad move. We would be getting older by aquiring Gordon and Tejada and giving up quality, and younger players.

by fuzzycubfan on Oct 15, 2007 4:25 PM CDT   0 recs

hopefully, this won't open up yet another...
extended debate, but I find it funny that you consider those three our MVPs. Theriot barely cracks my top 10, and neither of the other two rank in my top three.

by Thelonious on Oct 15, 2007 10:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Marmol and DeRosa are probably staying
But no way DeRosa and Theriot were more valuable than Marmol, Ramirez and Sori.

by elgato on Oct 15, 2007 10:18 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

MVP's?
The Theriot love is outta hand sometimes...

DeRosa and Marmol are guys the Cubs should hang onto, along w/ Z, Lilly, Howry, Soriano, Lee and ARam...

by CubFaninCA on Oct 15, 2007 10:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah... no
I'm just going to pile on and say that Theriot was not the MVP of anything.  He's a solid player and I think he and Cedeno should platoon at SS next year, but he was not more vaulable than Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Zambrano, Lilly, DeRosa, Marmol, or Hill.

by IllinoisCubs on Oct 16, 2007 4:12 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

absurd
Marmol and Pie for and aging player past his best years???

AAAHHHHHH

Let me get back to you, will ya, Charlie? I got a guy on the other line asking about some white walls.

by JB 23 on Oct 15, 2007 5:27 PM CDT   0 recs

How do people like this get a job
writing on baseball. DeRosa for a 39 year-old pitcher who has half an arm left. DeRosa ONLYS plays 4 positions, gamer, and take away the double play ball in game 3, had one helluva year.
Hey I would like to get Tejada, but for Pie, Marmol to be in the package, NO thanks. I would offer Marshall and Theriot or Gallagher and Theriot.

by Johnny Callison was a Cub on Oct 15, 2007 6:34 PM CDT   0 recs

SS
I agree that Pie, Marmol, and Cedeno is too high of a price to pay for aging, overweight Miggy.  However, the Cubs could possibly use an upgrade at SS.

Possibilities:

  1.  Renteria for Sean Marshall and a PTBNL.
  2.  Bill Hall for ?
  3.  Luis Castillo for 2B, moving DeRo to SS.
  4.  ST competition between Riot and Cedeno.
  5.  Adam Everett, if non-tendered.  Worse OPS, better glove.
  6.  Other ideas?

re: SS
  1. This is my choice, but we might need to include a little more than Marshall and a PTBNL. I'd like to work Eric Patterson into this trade, somehow.
  2. Possibly, but I wouldn't count on the brewers trading within the division (especially with their likely rivals next season).
  3. DeRosa is too weak at SS. Castillo is not worth weakening our infield defense.
  4. Ryan Theriot is not a qualified starting shortstop. Cedeno probably isn't either, but his age, greater defensive potential, and ability to hit for more power gives him a decidedly large edge on Theriot. Theriot should remain valuable to this team as a supersub.
  5. I think Everett is actually somewhat overrated defensively, and he has been one of the largest offenders of negative VORP in baseball over the past few years. Don't get me wrong: he IS an extremely good defensive shortstop, and would be a major improvement over the IzTheriot combo we used this year. But his defense doesn't compensate enough for his terrible offense. He'd be a little better than Theriot if he could match his career best of 39 FRAR with a WARP1 near 4 in 2006, but I doubt it. Based on his career, those impressive defensive numbers that led to his career high in WARP1 look pretty flukey.

by Thelonious on Oct 15, 2007 10:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Renteria
I think ATL would be pretty interested in Bob Howry, and perhaps Sean Marshall.  With Kerry Wood looking good, Howry's expendable...

The Cubs need to add power in the lineup, with Lee's and Jones' power numbers down..  Theriot's .346 slugging % just isn't going to hack it, but I think he'd be a nice utility guy and could start @ 2b versus lefties, when DeRo plays RF.

There really is no
reason in picking up an aged SS past his glory days. Remember, Dustys not the manager anymore. do you honestly think Piniella would be dumb enough to support a move that ridiculous?

Darwin Barney
He is a rising talent. He was drafted this summer and was in Peoria by the end of the year. At worst he'll be in Daytona next year, but more likely will be in TN. He has excellent fundamentals and a high baseball IQ. His numebers were solid for jumping straight from college to pro ball. There is a no need for an aging vet, even if for a year. Theriot and Cedeno are enough for now, Barney will be SS by '09. That is as bold as I ever get here.

by Nibbles on Oct 15, 2007 10:13 PM CDT   0 recs

Barney
Barney is a filler at best.  He hit 19 year olds extremely well.  He doesn't have much projectability left, if any.  He was a high pick, and you may very well be right, but in no way should Darwin Barney ever stop you from picking up someone now.  He's got a low chance of making the team, very low.

by cubsfan2883 on Oct 15, 2007 10:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed
I've been a huge fan of Wilken's picks more often than not, but Barney doesn't look like much more than an all-glove, no-hit shortstop in the making. He was a disappointing selection for such a high round pick, IMO.

By all accounts, he's excellent defensively, but these types of players are common enough that I definitely wouldn't have gone after Barney that early in the draft.

by Thelonious on Oct 15, 2007 10:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

pretty ridiculous article
The proposed price tag for Tejada was too high, of course.

DeRosa probably won't get dealt, and he certainly won't be dealt for Flash freaking Gordon.

Horacio Ramirez?

by elgato on Oct 15, 2007 10:22 PM CDT   0 recs

SS
What about Orlando Cabrera?

The Angels brought up Erick Aybar at 2nd, but he's the future at short with Wood at 3rd, Kendrick at 2nd and Morales at 1st.  Cabrera could be expendable.  Not really sure what they need or what they would ask for (sound like they might have a new GM), but it might be worth kicking the tires to find out.

by eamuscatuli1881 on Oct 16, 2007 10:22 AM CDT   0 recs

With Stoneman out as GM,
it's a possibility now.   If Stoneman was still GM, a trade would be unlikely.

I hate his game...
I really do. If he had a bit more speed (and didn't make so much), perhaps. But he doesn't, so I'll pass.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this one, but I'll say it. I've got MAYBE a half-dozen players that I would make serious inquiries about if I were the Cubs. No wishful thinking, and mindful of their transitional situation. And if I couldn't pluck one of these guys, I'd look to spend my money on pitching, and/or wait till the deadline next year to see what I can get.

Edgar Renteria
Bobby Abreu
Brian Roberts
Kosuku Fukudome
Austin Kearns
Wilson Betemit

And probably in that order. I've no problem with position switches for Theriot (2nd), or DeRosa (RF), so that's me. And I'm very interested to see whether McPhail will shed everything and start from scratch, so I'd personally watching that Baltimore situation closely this winter.

Brad Wilkerson
What about Bad Brad Wilkerson?  He's not that old (he turned 30 this season)  He's a free agent.  His year with Texas showed a bounce back from the injuries and he has recent experience at First and in Right Field. (He's played a lot of games in CF as well, but injuries make that likely an unrealistic option).  He's got pretty good power and would likely be "cheap".  He's a left hander.   He would make a good back-up/Sunday starter for D. Lee and a good platoon partner for Murton (if you keep Murton and use him in a platoon....)

by frustratedfan on Oct 17, 2007 11:50 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Why is slick fielder a dirty word?
Assuming nobody on this board has seen Barney play, a good fielder is what you are looking for at short, right? He is young, but very accomplished in college. He has good speed, and Ryno was pretty high on the kid. I'd give a little credit to the guy who is in the HOF when talent is being evaluated.

by Nibbles on Oct 16, 2007 12:28 PM CDT   0 recs

First of all...
...Darwin Barney has an AWESOME name, and therefore I wish him nothing but the greatest success and want to see him have it in a Cubs uniform.

But Barney up until this point looks like the sort of Cubs prospect that has a much better name than he does talent level (see Buck Coats, Rocky Cherry.) Nothing to say that he WON'T become something, but a .715 OPS for a guy drafted out of college in low A isn't great.

His 1.156 OPS at rookie ball (small sample concerns abound) is freakin' awesome, though.
