Great call by Lou
to get Soto involved right from the get go.  As a rookie, I like tossing him right in the mix rather than letting him think and watch on the bench.  I think the kid is going to deliver.

I know it wasn't going to happen
but I wish it was Marshall instead of Marquis.  Also, I'm surprised with Fontenot.  I really thought they would take Monroe over him.

Regarding Fontenot...
... I bet you that he is there as an insurance policy for Ward.  Perhaps Ward isn't quite ready, but he is going because:

(1) the mere appearance of Ward being on the bench and the D-backs thinking he could come in...
(2) maybe Ward may not be available Wed, Thur, but maybe starting Sat?  You really can't make a roster move in this case.

If Ward was 90%+, I bet you that Monroe would have made it instead of Fontenot.

I think Lou
likes the versatility Fontenot gives him regarding speed and loading up the double switches late in the game.

There is the fact that Monroe has done nothing for this team.

Diamondbacks roster
Just curious if anyone has heard what the DBacks roster will be.  Its not on their website.

Bob Melvin
in his press conference today said he wouldn't announce the roster until 10 am tomorrow, which is the deadline.

I suppose it might leak out before then.

No Monroe
Good to see as I predicted he won't be since the DBacks only have 1 lefty of significance with Davis, but Jones has decent numbers against Davis.

What's up with Marquis though? I understand that he'll be used as long relief but I still don't think he should be on the roster. DBacks aren't going to score a lot of runs this series either. I actually would've like to see Marshall fill that role as he could be used in a Lefty situation as well and he did alright when he came out against the Reds.

But whateva. Looks good. Let's go snake huntin.

Piniella Said...
... in so many words, that there are some players that, over the course of their careers, have earned the right to be there.

I am paraphrasing here, of course, but I took that to mean that this was for players like Marquis.

If Ward had a bad year, I think this would have applied to him as well.

I go to a lot of DBack games and my in-laws are 2nd generation Arizona's who all are DBack fans and it's times like this, that they wish their son didn't marry someone from Cheecago.

Here's to a clean and injury free series and maybe the beginning of a good healthy rivalry.

It's probably the Kool-Aid
talking, but I think Soto is the real X factor here.  He's been on fire and I think he's just green enough not to be overwhelmed by the playoff atmosphere.  I think he'll be able to get some big hits and therefore make our lineup a lot more difficult to pitch to.

That, and I think he's new enough to the league that nobody has a good book on him...

great point
i was thinking this today while driving. He wasn't on the Cubs roster when they played the Dbacks this season. At least i dont think so.  So i could see Webb or the other pitchers getting cocky and going after Soto.

by TJ3117 on Oct 2, 2007 8:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Always a few unexpected players who rise
Soto is a natural pick like Jenks or Wainwright. Soto is seeing the ball real good, there is not alot of scouting on him yet as he is hitting in all the zones except low and down the middle and low and in. He has established himself defensively so he will be challenged.

My other guess is Wood will be a surprise in that because of the off days he might see two possibly three games. He is pitching hot now.

Lastly Soriano could just offensively dominate the early game like he has. The other is Floyd he has a good record there.

Everything I look through points to a possible sweep.

Your point about Soto
is something I've been thinking about the last couple of weeks.  I've been hoping Lou used him enough to keep him sharp but not enough to allow much of a book on him.  The kid is a hell of a hitter and the less scouting done on him, the better.  GO CUBS!!!!!!!!

This is where Eric Patterson, hurt himself and
the team with his immature antics.  NOT saying that he would've necessarily earned himself a spot on the team, but given the tough decision with regard who to take among Murton/Monroe/Fontenot/Cedeno-who are all essentially one-tool players (or really contribute one way very well but very poorly in others), Patterson could've really planted himself as a very valuable part of this playoff roster.  If he were able to keep his head on straight and stick around for September, he may have gotten a few at bats to prove a reasonable contact hitter, with speed, who can play some defense at a few different positions.

Not saying that Patterson would be an absolute savior here, but his multiple talents off the bench certainly could've been a welcome addition with versatility to Lou's bench.

he's a prettier player but but better?
He might have move potential phyiscally, he might have better speed but he is a player without a position, learning the OF and below Fontenot defensively, which is Fonty's liability.

Patterson must come to terms and compete mentally, emotionally and physically. That said he appears to be a good prospect for super utility player. Learn to play all infield positions, or at least two, and all outfield positions and he could make a Piniella team.

You're correct
The difference between Patterson and the others on our bench is that we can trust him to fill in at some other positions.  The rest of our bench, as it stands currently (with the exception of Pie who can run and field all 3 outfield positions if needed) are essentially one-skill guys.  Who knows if Patterson would've proven himself if he had stayed, but his versatility would certainly be welcome.

Nice moves
I really like Hart on the roster. Success pays off. Monroe wasn't all that spectacular with the Cubs, and they still have plenty of OF options. Fontenot gives a good pinch-running and flexibity for double shifts if needed. We don't figure to see all that much lefthanded pitching. If we make it past the D-Backs look for that to be one move that is made, you would definitely keep Monroe on the roster against the Phillies wo have some lefty starters, or if you went to Colorado where you needed faster defensive replacements in the OF and want more power than Fontenot can provide.

Well, seems like you always have to have...
...that one speed guy for those late-inning pinch-running scenarios.  Seeing as how Patterson took himself out of the running (no pun intended) awhile ago, that means it was either Pie or Fuld.  Fuld would probably be the popular choice with the fans based on his willingness to run into walls, but his overall credentials are probably even less than Pie's.

Against Webb; left handed bats
You cannot start Fontenot over DeRosa but lefties hit .100 points higher than righties, and Fontenot had two hits in July.

Floyd and Jones will be key and Jones had two RBI's in July against Webb.

My guess; Soriano sparks a quick lead. Cubs eak out a couple runs through the 6th. The key then is Big Z getting through the 6th with a lead.

by drewishdrewid on Oct 3, 2007 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Overall, I like it...
...solid lineup by Lou, which is to be expected.

That said, I would have moved DeRosa to the 2 slot, moved JJones behind ARam, stuck Soto at 7, and Theriot at the 8 spot.  That would give us:

Soriano (R)
DeRosa (R)
Lee (R)
Floyd (L)
ARam (R)
JJones (L)
Soto (R)
Theriot (R)
Zambrano (L? Switch-hitter?)

You force Melvin to play matchups in the middle of the lineup late in the game, have a good on-base guy and sparkplug at the bottom (Theriot) who can get on potentially for Soriano/Zambrano to drive in, and put an experienced solid bat (DeRosa) behind Soriano.

That being said, Lou knows how the Cubs go, so I'll defer to his wisdom.

I think Sam Fuld would have been valuable
His speed and defense would have been good for the big outfield in arizona. also he could pitch run like he has been doing. But i guess thats what Pie is for. As for Fontenot I don't think he has done anything lately and Monroe's bat could have been better to have off the bench then Fontenot's.

dont you get the feeling though
that fontenot will grind out and give better at bats than monroe?

and maybe it doesnt count for anything, but i like the fact that fontenot contributed earlier in the season, and has been part of the team longer, just seems like maybe hed be hungrier, more focused, but maybe thats just me being crazy.

Fuld will probably write another 'Field of Dreams'
of his appearances and two catches....A very good organizational player like Greenburg, Coats, Ojeda.

Cubs have developed a very good bench by developing players and acquiring them.
Bench: Murton (platoon), Fontenot, Kendall (good bats), Pie good 'D' and potential bat, Cedeno 'D', Ward (acquired bat), DL-Pagan acquired versatile 5th-OF, Monroe, thanks for the effort. Where is Fuld going to play? Next year they have Patterson and Colvin is ascending.

understand the 'good natured bickering' about the 24th and 25th man on the roster.

If the top 21 - 22 guys do what they are capable of the cubs will have no problems.  Yea, there are unsung heros in the postseason every year, but it the stars that need to shine for the cubs to have a chance at it all this year.

Just wasting time
What else are we going to do until tomorrow night?!

by TJ3117 on Oct 2, 2007 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why the bubble picks
Essentially we knew who were the 19 picks outside of Ward Pie, Fontenot, Cedeno, Marquis, Hart

Kendall is now the backup catcher, surprised, he will also be a late game pinch hitter which is not bad.

Ward was whether he could bat or not, evidentally he can so enough said for a .327 PH...

Going backward from there, Cedeno was obvious in that he can play three defensive positions and has shown he can respond when asked with PH this September. Cedeno offers good speed in late game situations.

I think situationally than Pie was chosen over Monroe because of the same considerations, defense and pinch running speed. Championships are won more with pitching and defense than with offense, especially late in the game.

Fontenot was chosen for pinch hitting good speed and double switches for an inning or two in that Lou will not burn a full player by switching DeRosa to RF. He then could substitute Cedeno in the very late innings or switch DeRosa back moving Jones over, is is very versatile. Thus Jones and DeRosa almost are worth two extra players making bench players who have defensive liabilities less troublesome, while the defensive substitutes offer speed.

So looking above outside of Ward, speed and a definite role that involves late game defense with offensive pinch hitting.

Marquis, my bet is we see Marquis pinch hit more than once even a sacrifice bunt or early pinch hitter, same for Zambrano, especially if games go extra innings. Marquis is for insurance and a confidence boost.

Hart, the surprise will have an impact. My feeling is tomorrow Zambrano will not see the 7th inning or 100 pitches and could be removed after 5 or 6 innings pitched. Not because he was knocked out but Cubs could have a lead and Lou goes to the pen seeking trump Melvin for game 4.

Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."

by Ivy Walls on Oct 2, 2007 10:04 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm not.
I was in favor of the Monroe trade because he had hit LHP well. But he did not do that after his acquisition -- he didn't produce. Matt Murton hit better in September, so Murton made the team and Monroe didn't. It really is as simple as that.

And I know I'm bashing, and beating a dead horse here, but jeebus, what a colossal difference between Dusty and Lou. Lou is light years ahead of Dusty in how he handles a roster. Dusty: 'My guys' versus Lou "Hot Hand"
There in lies the difference. Lou finds out two things when he gets a player, is he ready to play and what kind of role can he serve.

Kendall was better than Bowen or Hill who could catch and throw but essentially were as effective as pitchers in the lineup. Kendall offered more offense but the league began to adjust and simply take second base when they wanted.

Soto comes and gets an opportunity and immediately provided more performance, better defense and a power bat. NO BRAINER....

Hart comes and shows in his few opportunities he got tough outs. As a reliever his slider is excellent and he throws strikes. NO BRAINER.

This mantra is actually more loyal to the team as he has few individual loyalties.

Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."

Good news- with how TJS goes these days most guys come back even BETTER with more velocity. If Z gets blown up in game 1 that means he probably didnt throw a ton of pitches and thus should be more likely to be used in Game 1

Marquis has been SO bad since the break I don't see how anyone could have confidence in him

5.73 ERA, K/9 = 4.9, BB/9 = 3.7, K/BB = 1.3, HR/9 = 1.0

i don't see how we could start Marquis with any confidence, since the ASB 40% of his starts have ended with 5 Runs or more allowed.... our record for the season with 5 runs or more allowed is 10-58...

You also...
...need to remember that there are (I believe) no "injury" call-ups in the playoffs.

I think Marquis making it is also in part because of that - God forbid Z or Lilly get injured, but we had to have someone who could start take a slot as a pitcher in case.  Some people think Hart could do this, but I'd rather trust Marquis if that emergency situation comes up - he's a veteran, experienced, and just pissed off enough about last year to want to go out and shut down the other team if given the chance.

I believe
the injury rule changed this year.  I could be wrong, but I think you can replace someone on your playoff roster if they are injured during the series.  You just have to replace them with someone who would have qualified to be on the playoff roster to begin with.

to be specific
If an injury that is approved by MLB officials (collaberated by medical professionals) a player can be added during the series from the 40-man roster.

No complaints on the roster, Lou is a wise man...
Monroe had no business being awarded a spot based purely on a couple good weeks for the Tigers in 2006.  If he was a good hitter, he wouldn't have sucked for the entire season this year.  However, I wonder why Lou dropped Aramis and Soto down a slot in the batting order.
