Last time we did this the Cubs won in great fashion. Let's hope they do it again tonight. They certainly can't have two horrible offensive games in a row can they? Hopefully Soriano finds his way on base tonight and the others follow his lead. I hope Ted pitches a lights out game.  Let's do this Cubs!!

the only problem with that game
is that it's taking forever.  Where I am , I'm assuming they won't cut to the Cubs game at the top of the hour....so I may be stuck watching a couple more boring innings and getting the Cubs game by the 3rd inning or so....

And it looks like the Yankees are road kill in Game 1 right now.

I'd actually be pretty surprised if the Yankees make it past the Indians.  That regular season record is pretty meaningless in the post season.

Having said that, the Yankees could still win it all.  They're the über-Phillies.  Even more offense and not even Cole Hamels in the rotation.  The Yankees bullpen is a little better, if only because of Rivera and Chamberlain.

Actually, we won on Saturday
but who's counting. I don't think many were paying close attention at that point. Is tonights game going to be available on TNT or would they delay the start since the Cleveland game is not going to be over by 9?

Long story short...
Soriano has been called a POS, and several people say they absolutely hated him and he has no business playing baseball.

Lilly sucks, and should be drawn and quartered.

The Cubs, overall, are done and had no business basically even taking the field this season.

Oh, and you would think Aram had murdered and unwed mother and child this morning.

So, here I am.

We're down 2 runs in the 3rd inning facing a pitcher who is struggling to throw strikes and has labored through 3 innings, and some people act like they have never seen a baseball game before.

Because, you know, everyone can make that catch off the wall that Sori missed, and everyone should be able to hit a major league pitcher.

Hell, I couldn't even hit minor league pitching, hence the reason I am here with you fine folks tonight.

Bought a brand new $1300 shotgun off a desperate guy going through a divorce for $300

Hey guys..
I had to come over here because I was up to my knees in...well you know.

Our guys look totally out of sync tonight. The momentum is definitely in the Dbacks favor, for now. But we all know what happened in 1984. Even if we lose this game, and there is a lot of baseball left to play tonight, we will be going home to our fans in our park.

I remember the Yankees being up on the Dodgers 2-0 going back to L.A. and the Dodgers swept them 4 straight after getting their momentum up at home.

Let's keep our chins up. What I like about you guys is you are not quitters, and I think our boys will show us the same. All we need is one break to go our way and the whole thing changes.

I just don't get it.
The cubs trump the d'backs by far in almost every category. Has the team given up? Did something happen behind the curtains that we don't know about that might have this team perplexed? This just isn't the team that said "Cub fans deserve a championship."  Somebody please take this pain away.

I remember 2004
The Red Sox were behind 0-3 to the Yankees. I was listening to the Red Sox fans calling up Sportstalk radio and saying they were no longer going to be Red Sox fans...and then Dave Roberts stole second base in game 4, and the rest was history.

Most of the gusy look tired, no swagger
It reminds me of the 2004 Cardinals... so much talent but at the end they fell flat - looking tired and defeated after game one.

I don't want that for these guys, but if this game heads were it looks like it's going we're going they're going to have to believe that they can compete again.

All that said. Prove me SO WRONG guys - get back in this thing and carry the freakish win back home!

I have said all
along that this team has surpassed my expectations by 3 fold after the last couple of seasons. They have defied a lot of odds to get here. If they can't pull this off, it has still been a super fun year of baseball. And I totally look forward to next year. This isn't a team you get rid off. It's a team to grow and mold. They will be back here next year too.

It's the same old shit.  There's no curse, there's no goat....it's the failure to pitch, to hit, to execute in a short series.

In the small sample size that exists since 1984, in post season, this team has won ONE series. That's a fact. I can only hope when this team participates in the post season in the future, perhaps the odds start even up. The 'hasn't won in 100 years' is bullshit. It has nothing to do with this team, but that's the storyline for next year.

But the fact is this team has not won in the post season, (in the modern era) and it's NOT going to start this season.

The Yankees have not done well in the post season in 9 years, really -- but nobody brings that to light. It's the 700 World Championships they have that kind of puts any 'slump' in perspective. We don't get to the post-season often, and the Cubs have gone down in flames every time. The failure, combined with the history is magnified out of proportion.

It's awful to see these non-historical teams...the Diamondbacks, the Marlins.....go home champions, as we sit here with our hat in our hand, nose pressed against the window.

And it's gonna happen again. It's hard to swallow.

And anybody who thinks they are going to win 3 in a row is a spectacular optimist that I wish I could be.

I have literally lived and died with this team since 1964. But I know when the party's over.
I have been there, and done that, and bought the book.

having that arsenal of memories. I can only recall half way well from the late 80s/early 90's on and I have some scar tissue all ready. But you are still here. I guess convert it into a badge of honor of sorts. Takes a lot of heart and dedication to be a Cubs fan period.

It's baseball. If you don't want your heart ripped out, then quit being passionate about anything in life. Divorce your wife if you have one and go live in a cave in the side of a mountain. Don't adopt any pet lizards while there, or they  may rip your heart out when a peregrin falcon with psoriasis plucks it off the rock in the bright of day and feasts on it's innards.

I think I speak for any logical passionate fan of any team when I say I will watch until we are eliminated. Down to the last out.

It's baseball. It's not life. If the success or failures of any team cause my heart to be ripped out and spiral into depression, then well...maybe I'm not that kind of a fan that you are.

Personally, I like it that way.

Look at it this way...
If our Cubs get eliminated, we take whatever feeble ratings they (TBS/FOX) are hoping for with us!!

The NLCS and WS will truly have crappy ratings without the Cubs in the dance, so we get to have that small revenge as we drown our sorrow in our favorite beverage...assuming we don't climb out of this hole.

We both started at the same time - 1964. I'm in L.A.

This is where Lou Pinella earns his paycheck. If he is the kind of leader I think/hope he is, he will get these guys fired up for game 3.

I will never forget Tommy Lasorda saying, after the Yankees went up 2-0 over the Dodgers, and someone suggested the Yankees were going to sweep the Dodgers, and he said, "Sweep my ass!"

That is what these guys need to hear from Lou. The players are really low, their heads are down and they are thinking the "curse" is once again bearing down on them. He has to inspire them, to make them believe again. I know it's a tall order with what is happening now, but that's what leaders do. Inspire Confidence!

and came over here.  It was ugly over there.  I think the authorities will decide they can't be saved!

As I see it, I can't get aggitated over whatever happens in this post-season.  I always felt the Cubs would NEVER win the WS as long as Tribune owned the team.  That will soon be over.  Hurray!

The fact that so much progress was made this year, especially given where we were in late June (8 games out), I don't understand the venom (on the other post) about the failure on the field.  Whatever good happens at this point would be a bonus.

Otherwise, we have a great base to build on for 2008.  Compare where we are now versus October 2006.

In the interim, I'll watch every inning of every game until we win 11 or are eliminated.

The best hitters get hits 35% of the time.

Brandon Webb only won 18 of 34 starts this year, while losing 10 starts...that doesn't sound that great, but it was still one of the best in the NL.

This game is all about how you handle failure.  I guess that holds true for players AND fans. :-(

Watching these D backs play -
Makes me think that they are just peaking even better at a more opportune time than the Cubs did and the Cubs weren't ready for this.

And that just builds momentum, especially for the home team.

I CAN however see the Cubs going back to Wrigley and taking those two games - bringing it back to AZ for game 5.

And THAT would be fun, regardless of the outcome.

Maybe all that veteren team stuff is over rated...
I mean look at all the clubs with young or no-name players doing well so far (Colorado, Arizona, Cleveland)....and even most of the Cubs who are actually producing tonight are Soto, Theriot, and role player DWard.....hmmmmmmm....and if you need a team to cheer for if our Cubbies tank may I suggest my other team...the Cleveland Indians....they have young exciting players and haven't won a ring since '48.

This is gonna go back to Wrigley on Saturday, and the Cubs will take that game to give AZ some pause...

Then Sunday the Cubs will tie it up and win BIG.
Then AZ will be stunned, but will also have false security in thinking: "it's okay...we will go home and take game 5....we beat them there already."

If it makes everyone feel any better, the lucky spot wasn't in the bedroom, in any meaning.

Of course, Mrs. Cubbie was well in la-la land at 1:30 AM (that woman is a sleeping machine, usually in bed by 9:30 and could sleep through a dump truck full of mitroglycerin barreling through a dynamite factory).

But the Cubs did kind of threaten in the 9th while I was lying in bed, right up until the heart and power of our order came up to quickly kill the rally.

The other difference
If the Cubs lose Saturday or Sunday I expect the people here will send the team off with a respectful ovation after the end which they deserve.

The lack of class in the other thread is disgusting.  The hate for Lee, Ramirez and Soriano is disgusting.

They all want the whole team traded.

You want to really laugh?  They want Lee, Soriano and Ramirez benched for Pie, Fontenot and I forgot the 3rd one.

i went out to watch the game with some friends at a bar. just got home. it was definitely a bummer, but saturday is a new day. all we have to do is win a couple at wrigley and we are right back in it. figured i'd browse this thread and stay away from the other one. it's not over yet - but even if it was, i think going from last in the league to division champs is a pretty special season -- and it's not over yet. actually, the only thing that really bothers me is the way everyone on the bench looked so defeated by the 5th or 6th inning. i live in denver, and i have seen the rockies team this year go through some bad games, but everyone is hanging on the fence cheering on each play. i wish the cubs would do that more.....

Hopefully this is all part of some grand scheme to test the faith and hearts of Cubdom. When the Cubs (FINALLY) win the World Series, you never would expect anything less than a victory snatched from the jaws of defeat.

No NL team has ever come back from 0-2 in the 5 game NLDS. Perhaps only a team destined to win against all odds can buck this trend.

The stage is set for tear-filled glory.

I don't share in it, but it certainly was a good idea of Sue's to have an alt game thread.

And, btw, Sue, I would guess Soto's jersey # will change in ST next year so you may wish to wait a bit on the Uni.

I understand how frustrated you feel. We all feel it we just show it in different ways. I'm just more comfortable during games in a less hostile enviroment.

This team made some great improvements from last season and with new owners I think more improvements will happen. Things will get better. We've seen the worst and that is behind us.

I just think this idea ...
Of segregating these game threads is ridiculous and childish.  For the past fifty years, our neck of the woods has been trying to escape that particular evil and suddenly, we're being treated to it--on of all things--a baseball blog.  We're better fans than you because we don't swear when someone makes a boneheaded play?  We don't chastise this talented team when they show no patience at the plate?  Personal expression must only take one form to be accepted over here?

Eventually the fair weather posters--and their antics--will drop by the side of the road, but perhaps we should learn be a bigger lesson here:  LET'S ALL TRY TO GET ALONG.  This is just a game, folks--not a fru-fru country club.

This place is starting to smack of cliqueish-ness that plagued it last winter all over again.  I thought that problem left earlier this year ... and I believe many of those same posters who demand a "separate but equal" game thread  complained because they felt left out of the so-called hip gang.  And yet, we're in danger of it happening again just because.

Holier than thou attitudes just really piss me off.  Not everyone likes the same flavour of Kool-Aide--perhaps we should all remember and respect that in word and deed.

I started the game diary because I am uncomfortable in the game thread. Never ever have I said I am a better fan than anyone else. I am not a prude when it comes to cursing because I do curse myself but using the f-word towards our players and saying they suck is more than I want to read.

I am not a negative person by nature so all of it in the game thread is not for me. Obviously I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Al gave his blessing for the game diary. If you feel it's childish and ridiculous then I guess we won't be seeing you in here any more.

attitude? Like Sue said, Al has given his blessing on this diary. If you don't like it maybe you shouldn't post in it. Just sayin.....

The biggest thing about the game thread sometimes is there are a lot of posters who only show up here when something goes bad during the game. They say f'n DLee or f ARam etc etc. I don't mind complaining about a play, but I am sure the players are trying to do their best. And most of these posters never have anything to add to any of the non-game diaries. The alternative thread has been pretty cool as far as I'm concerned. Thanks Sue....
