Anyone else find it odd...
...That we here at BCB take a (daily) vested interest in watching workers push dirt around on our field??  I'm not sure if that's passion or obsession?!  Even so, I enjoy this every day.

Oh, I'm not complaining!
I look forward to Al's post of this every morning, too.  I just doubt there's any other sports blog - baseball or otherwise - that's watching off-season stadium construction...especially when it's not a brand-spanking-new stadium!

Just another reason I know BCBers are the most passionate.

Baseball is a year-round obsession with me
I don't really follow any other sport that closely.  I like the Hot Stove League nearly as much as the season.  It makes for great arguments and discussions over free agents, trades, upcoming rookies and the like.

This is so nice to see Thanks Al!
I've just started reading a Cheater's Guide to Baseball.

The second chapter is about Emil Bossard who, I believe, is Roger Bassard grandfather.  Roger Bassard is overseeing this renovation projects and takes care of the field at the Cell.

The Bossard family has a long history of doctoring fields (within the rules...sort off) to help their team win.  Examples are building up foul lines to help bunts stay fair, softening the basepaths to deter stealing, messing with the pitching mound so opposing pitchers aren't comfortable.

Of course both teams have to play on the same field, so the key is to doctor the field to favor the home team.

What do you think could be done to Wrigley to play to the strength of our team?

Can the new sod
hit lefthanded for power, and play right field?  Maybe this is the first step to the Cubs converting Wrigleyville to be like the neighborhood around Fenway...instead of the Green Monster though, we'd have The Grass Monster (but, maybe the grass monster is already Manny Ramirez...)

Ed Lynch is STILL on the Cubs payroll, as our D-Backs scout in Phoenix. Lynch attends all 81 D-Back home games with a notepad in hand. Really paid off for us!

Keep me updated on that chapter, will ya?
Very intrigued now... I'm guessing the infield and mound can be tampered with to a great extent in between homestands. For instance, if the White Sox were on the road and coming back home to play Rickey Henderson and the A's, or Yanks back in the day, Bassard could soften the basepaths. Then, he could re-harden it after he series.

Unrelated to Sod, or any grass for that matter
FWIW (I'm using that now that I learned what it means) I attended the Pat Hughes appearance last night in Naperville.  He was spectacular.

There were only around 75 people there, so Pat stood around and talked for nearly an hour.  He began with the "Ronny sets his hair on fire story," and went on to talk about his book, Harry Caray, and the Cubs.

He did a really long question and answer session, telling us some more Ronny stories (his favorite is the "Brant Brown" day when he went down to the locker room and saw Jim Riggleman consoling Santo, he still seemed perplexed/shocked/amused that the team's manager had to put his arm around the broadcaster and talk him through a tough loss), a few Harry tales, and bits about Bob Uecker and Al Maguire.  He didn't hold back much either, evaluating where he thinks the team is now (he assessed the glove and bat of each starter), the SS role, JJones, Geovany Soto, the opening in CF and outfield defense, steroids, Fukudome (Pat wants him here too), OBP (he loves high on base guys), and the Hall of Fame (someone asked him if he thinks about it for himself, no talk about Santo in the Hall).

He shared a few personal stories about his childhood, his college basketball playing days, his career, the CD series, and who his favorite players are (DLee - who he gushed about, Sammy (never saw anything steroid related, loved the guy for sheer entertainment), Ryno, Yount, and Molitor if you were wondering).

During the book signing portion, he graciously took pictures with every fan, signed as many books, balls, photos as you wanted and talked to and thanked everyone.  He is a class act.

On a personal note - Just hearing his voice booming through those speakers gave me goosebumps.  I was deep in baseball withdrawl, but I think that was enough to hold me over til the convention.  If anyone sees that he's doing another signing near you, it's definitly worth going.

Also, FWIW, the book is fantastic. If you're around today Bruce Miles, you guys did a fantastic job.  Great pictures, lots of fun Harry stories.  I haven't had a chance to listen to the CD yet.

i wish I could have made it,
but to get from northbrook to naperville at that time of the day is rough. I met pat hughes at the convention last year and really enjoyed talking to him. He is a very nice guy to talk to and I highly encourage you all to talk to him at the convention this year if you get the opportunity.

Very cool story.
I'd have liked to make it too, but as the poster above said, Naperville in rush hour from the city is a hike.

Maybe he'll do one closer to the north side.

Pat is defintely the man
Every time I see him now, I thank him and Ron for their assistance in 2003 when I asked a girl to Prom junior year. He doesn't quite remember it anymore, but when I jar his memory, he usually has a good one liner to boot. Defintely a classy guy.

There may be no PTBNL coming from the Twins
According to the Star Tribune, "Terms of the deal require the Twins to send the Cubs a minor leaguer only if Monroe remains with the team. The Twins traded for Monroe because they think he can bounce back from a horrible 2007 season and provide power to a lineup that sorely needs it."

http://www.startribune.com/twins/story/1549048.html

by Porfi on Nov 14, 2007 9:07 AM CST reply actions

I expected something like that
PTBNL this time of year is somewhat unusual so I expected it would be based on whether he remained a Twin.

The Twins knew the Cubs were going to non-tender him.  I guess they decided that getting their hands on him first might help them resign him through artibration or maybe they'll non-tender him and hope they resign him.  In any case, I'm not expecting much of a return even if he remains a Twin.

by rlpete on Nov 14, 2007 9:20 AM CST up reply actions

It sounds to me like...
... the Twins are indeed going to non-tender him and try signing him to a lower-dollar contract.

Even if the Cubs don't get anyone in return, they've still gotten rid of someone who wasn't going to contribute in 2008.

Totally off topic so sorry...
wasn't worthy IMO of a separate diary.

Did anyone watch the Ray Mancini Story last night on ESPN?  I thought it was done nicely and gave a good recap of the man's life.

The detailed account of the Kim fight was rough.  I cannot believe the guilt Mancini must feel still with all the reminders over the years.

I was not familiar with the whole thing but Kim dying, Kim's mother committing suicide, then the ref who did the fight killed himself years later.  I cannot imaging having reminder after reminder of something that I did like this.

Mancini seems like a good person who could not escape something that was truly a hazard of the sport.

I enjoyed it and learned a lot about the man too.

Can't wait to see how they anchor that textile
material that is supposed to keep the sod several degrees higher than the outside air temperature.

That will prove very valuable as long as the air temperature stays above 24F. Friend of mine who does golf courses uses that on new greens.

According to this Ken Rosenthal story, the team should go after Torii Hunter to upgrade CF. Seems like he's suggesting that Juan Pierre should be moved to a corner outfield spot.

Oh wow. I'd love to see that arm in RF.

I've seen
a few former major leaguers in the independents (Rick Wilkins, Darryl Strawberry, Rickey Henderson, Wes Chamberlain, Kevin Foster, Brant Brown {yes, I did see him drop a routine pop up in Schaumburg too}), but this would bring a whole new attendence level to the Frontier League.

I know it'd never happen for real, but if Bonds played against that level of pitching, a second basemen might die by line drive.

Damn your misleading subject line!
I actually skipped over the first line and just read the "felt their passion" bit. Then I read that he hasn't met with any MLB teams yet, which confused the hell out of me. Your misdirection worked like a charm!

I'm actually surprised that he hasn't met with any MLB teams. I know that he's a fallback for some teams, but we've all been reading about how Hendry's really looking to pick him up. Two days into it, I would have expected SOME movement on signing him (especially before the market sets its own prices).
