Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Wow, this one's a shocker......

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7445434?CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=49

"The Cubs and Padres are among the teams showing interest in Jenkins, along with the Giants, Rangers and Royals."

This one catches me by surprise.  Hendry isn't usually interested in guys who struck out 116 times in 420 at bats with an OBP of .319.

Jim, put the pen in your pocket and the contract back in the briefcase.  Please.

Well
21 homers in 420 at-bats >>> 5 homers in 453 at-bats...   The Cubs need home runs too.  And don't give me this sh#*t about Burnitz Part II...

The suggestion
that Jenkins could help this team is not worth discussion. He's not good enough for the Brewers and they know him.
It's not to late to go to Soto.

That would be really stupid
Murton has a higher everything and costs less.

Hendry
Did someone say Hendry isn't interested in guys who strike out over a 100 times?  This would be a typical Hendry move....another average player he'll over pay.  Although, this Mourton love has to stop.  Jenkins has twice the power and twice the arm.

good baseball has passed by Jenkins
The last thing this team needs is old guys who used to be good and who strike out too much

Please no more.

Let me get back to you, will ya, Charlie? I got a guy on the other line asking about some white walls.

Maybe
if he is cheap and he would be a 4th OF.  The guy likes to go yard.
PC load letter, what the f*** does that mean?

Y'know a week or three ago...
...when it was announced that the Brewers weren't going to renew Jenkins option, I thought to myself, "I wonder whether the Cubs will look at him for right field."

I hope it doesn't happen. Acquiring Jenkins would be a desperation move at best, and I really don't care about how many home runs he's hit. Look at Cliff Floyd -- the Cubs signed him to play right field and hit home runs this past season and, as nice a guy as Cliff is/was, the team never got an adequate return on investment IMHO.

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2008 Chicago Cubs starting outfield: Soriano-Pie-Fukudome. Let it be.

Not only that...
... Jenkins isn't really a right fielder. He was the regular RF for the Brewers in 2005 and 2006, but mainly because they didn't have anyone else to play there. He's a left fielder.

I also think this gets too overblown -- every time the Cubs are mentioned in a list of five or six teams showing "interest" in a player, we get breathless worries here about some sort of signing right around the corner. It may mean nothing more than kicking the tires.

That said, Geoff Jenkins belongs nowhere near a Cub uniform.

I would like to agree....
but given Hendry's history, this move would not be at all a surprise and probably expected.

The only thing Jenkins is good for
anymore is being Farve's stuntman in his movie documenting his tremendous career.

If only da bears could find a freakin QB to start for that long, even if he was only as half as good as him I'd be a happy camper.

I propose a toast to the great 100th anniversy gift known to mankind - A CUBS WORLD SERIES VICTORY!

And don't forget...
... that Favre was released before he went to the Packers, and was not highly touted out of college.

Which just goes to show that drafting a QB #1, as the Bears did with the highly-touted Rex Grossman, does not necessarily mean you'll get a good pro QB.

corrections needed
Favre was the third QB taken in the 1991 nfl draft. Yes, it was a weak class for QBs, but he was the 33rd overall pick.

And Favre was never released, Ron Wolf had targetted him in the draft and when he missed, he dealt a, i believe, first round pick for him in the following offseason.

Dealing a first round pick for a backup QB counts as being highly coveted.

Corrections aside
I'm a Niners fan, and you're right.  The first overall pick could simply net you a QB with small hands who likes to hide injuries while his highly hyped (in the preseason) team loses its 7th straight.  But I guess after Montana and Young, I have to suffer through the 1st round picks of Jim Druckenmiller and Alex Smith (it only seems fair).

He'd have to be a LAST resort...
For all the talk of looking to get "more athletic" in the OF, Jenkins does not provide any of that.  I'd have to believe that any interest in Jenkins is strictly in the Jeromy Burnitz-style "we have to put somebody in RF" mold.  That's if we miss on Fukudome and we miss on all of the more athletic options.  And even then, if we did get him, it would likely create a platoon situation in RF.

This is all based on the idea that there's any real interest.  We don't know how interested the Cubs are (if they are interested at all), or what role they envision if they are interested.

Anyone else catch in that story
that the cubs are picking up 2 million of Jones salary.  That is the first I have seen of the actual dollar amount being exchanged.

From what I have heard he was due ~5 mil in salary plus a little over 1 million in bonus so it looks like the deal saves the cubs about 3 million (assuming Infante gets about 1 million).  Hopefully that 3 mil is used to boost the offer to Fukudome.

Agreed.
Still, saving $3M on a deal that looked pretty bad going into this year is a good thing.
