Twins/Rays trade coming?

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Twins would send Matt Garza, Jason Bartlett, and and Juan Rincon for Delmon Young, Jason Pridie, and Brendan Harris.  This would be quite the exchange of young players!

If this goes through, it should put an end to the Carl Crawford for Cedeno trade talks, as the Rays would get a shortstop in Bartlett.

Garza and Santana...
in the same off-season. Liriano still rehabbing? I wonder if that's a smokescreen, or Plan B in the event they can't find the right Santana deal?

Well...
I suspect that we should all get ready for next week. The Winter Meetings are stacking up to be a scorcher.

There's was something yesterday
from, I forget who, but it was in the Star Trib.  He said, though it was pure speculation and a tossing it out there sort of thing, but Santana and Nathan to the Red Sox for Ellsbury, Papelbon, Pedroia, and Buchholz.

oops, my bad
for some reason I thought it was in the Trib and not the Pioneer Press, which I respect quite a bit more.  Now, not so much...

seems pretty fair
though, if it were me id rather have delmon young than garza.

I'd rather have Garza
with the caveat TINSTAAPP.  (Although Garza's not a prospect anymore, you know the point.  Pitchers get injured.)

I'm really beginning to think Delmon Young isn't going to be anything more than a copy of his brother.  That's not a bad thing to be, but I'd rather have Matt Garza.

Still, the deal makes sense from both sides.  The Twins have more young arms than bats and the Rays have more young bats than arms.

Delmon
You still may want Garza but 162 games at age 21 with a line of .288/.316/.408 shows potential beyond his brother.  The walks are a bit of a concern though.

We don't have...
... what the Twins would want. Or more correctly, we probably do but it would rip the heck out of the future. Probably have to include Rich Hill, and then what would be the point?

Yeah
I just think Garza projects to be better than Hill.

hell
if delmon young is available, go get him hendry.  forget about this left-handedness people are obsessed with, id much rather have delmon young than crawford.  give em the house, we'll have a badass right fielder for a long time at cheap.

just goes to show how hard it's going to be...
...to trade for a good starting pitcher - good meaning either "right now good" or "potential to be good".  Either way, the asking price is going to be steep.  I think Garza is good, but he's not Delmon Young good.

What that tells me is we're probably better off keeping the Marshalls, Gallaghers, and Harts of our system and hope that at least one of them breaks through in the next year or two.  Because if Delmon Young is the price to pay for a Matt Garza, then we're not going to get squat if all we're offering is Cedeno, EPatterson, Fuld, etc.

I think this trade has more to do with...
...the Rays just wanting to cut loose of Young for his attitude and him not wanting to be there and teams knowing this, then anything else.

Young comes with a lot of baggage.

+1
there is little reason to trade a guy like Delmon when you have a nutty high risk/high reward guy on the roster who probably needs to go (Dukes), a guy you can't rely on for even 80 games a year (Baldelli), and a guy who hits a load of homers but doesn't fit in your plans (Gomes), all of whom are probably dealable...unless the first guy really REALLY doesn't want to be there.  Young must have made it really clear to the Tampa mgmt that he doesn't want to stay.

I'm just surprised they didn't try for a corner infielder or a better shortstop than Bartlett in exchange for Young...Garza's good, but the Tampa pitching system is really deep (McGee, Davis, Sonnanstine, Niemann, some guy named David Price...)

just kinda surprising to me.  I guess the trade's not set in stone yet, so we'll see..

You've also got a guy
in BJ Upton who needs to move to the outfield though.

In fact, the plan I've been hearing is that Evan Longoria takes over at third, Akinori Iwamura moves to second and Upton moves to the outfield.

by Josh Timmers on Nov 28, 2007 7:24 PM CST up reply actions

Upton already moved this year
He played centerfield almost twice as much as 2B this season.  I expect the Rays to move two of Dukes, Young, and Baldelli.  My money was on Dukes (to the Nationals for next to nothing) and Baldelli, but the Rays really want a high-end, young starter.

Upton's already in the OF...
he played the OF most of his time last year.  So it doesn't really clear space in the IF.  If Longoria is ready, it means Ty Wigginton moves to the bench.

Official
The trade is official.

The Minnesota Twins announced Wednesday that they have acquired outfielders Delmon Young and Jason Pridie along with infielder Brendan Harris from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for pitchers Matt Garza, Eduardo Morlan and infielder Jason Bartlett.

by john62 on Nov 28, 2007 9:25 PM CST reply actions

Morian
This kid is a pretty highly touted young reliever.  This makes this a pretty good deal for the Rays.

by madtown on Nov 28, 2007 9:37 PM CST up reply actions

yeah
Morlan changes things...makes the deal a little more even.  Definitely makes more sense than JC Romero along with Garza and Bartlett

by PrincetonCubs on Nov 28, 2007 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

I think the Twins got fleeced.
Garza could have been a mainstay for them for years, well, at least until he left in free agency.

Delmon Young isn't, to me, the sort of guy who will be successful for the longterm in Minnesota. His upside is probably his brother's career. Which isn't bad, but it's not going to be nearly as valuable to the Twins as Matt Garza's would have been.

Plus, Jason Bartlett is going to be a far better player than Brendan Harris; Harris may never have a better year than he did in 2007.

This deal may be the one that finally puts the Rays going in the right direction. Applause to them for making it; in fact, for finally making ANY deal that actually helps their team.

Don't be afraid...
 to speak your mind Al.

Talk about putting your stamp on a team though. This is one deal I could not see Terry Ryan having made.

by Damen Jackson on Nov 29, 2007 9:36 AM CST up reply actions

LOL on speaking my mind.
That's kind of what I do here, right?

I agree with you, Terry Ryan would NEVER have made such a deal. We'll see if it helps or hurts the Twins in the future.

by Al Yellon on Nov 29, 2007 9:52 AM CST up reply actions

completely disagree
his upside has got to be FAR greater than his brother's career.  dmitri young probably had half the speed delmon has, and half the power.

dmitri didnt have 20 home runs in a professional season until he was 27, delmon jacked 25 as an 18-year-old in A ball.

delmon knocked in 93 runs as a 21-year-old in his first full major league season, dmitri has NEVER knocked in 93 runs.

delmon young is an absolute badass and is probably already as good as his brother ever was.  this was a solid trade for the twins IMO, delmon young will be a superstar in this league, and projecting pitchers is a tricky business.  the only way this trade bites the twins in the ass is if matt garza goes on to be a number one starter with a cy young under his belt eventually.  even then, it might be a fair deal.

ok slight backtrack
dmitri has knocked in over 100 rbi once in his career, i missed 2005.  still though i stand by everything else, delmon young is a lot better than da-meat hook.

by kylejo on Nov 29, 2007 9:55 AM CST up reply actions

we'll see, I guess...
I envision Young hitting in between Mauer and Morneau longterm, and having a lot of .300+ seasons and knocking in a LOT of runs.  The chances of him being an all-star are a lot greater than Garza's,  I have to imagine, considering Young is a known quantity (hitting .288/18/93 with 10 sbs in the AL East at age 22) while Garza is two years older and has had dubious numbers playing for a good team (especially his peripherals like K/IP and K/BB, which would worry me.)  He could be a good #2 starter eventually, but I'd still rather have Delmon, he's more of a sure thing...

Bartlett is definitely an upgrade over Harris, though, that's very true.  And Morlan is more than a throw-in, so like I said, a pretty even trade.

by IllinoisCubs on Nov 28, 2007 10:08 PM CST reply actions

i agree
but not so much because the rays shored up shortstop, but because i doubt theyll want to give up another prized outfielder.  plus with the new stadium opening up, i doubt theyd trade away a fan favorite like that.

From MLBTR
"Despite the exclusion of Jacoby Ellsbury, Walters says the Red Sox have the lead in the Johan Santana sweepstakes.  The package would be Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie, Jon Lester, and Justin Masterson.  Not a bad haul.  I was thinking Lowrie might become a target of the Twins."

If this deal were to be made, would there really be any reason to play the 2008 season?  New England will follow up talk as to whether the 2007 Patriots were the greatest footbal team in  history with whether the 2008 Red Sox were the greatest baseball team in history.
