Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

ESPN Article

I didn't see this anywhere else, so I thought I would post it.  The Cubs (and some former Cubs) are mentioned several times in this ESPN article:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove07/columns/story?columnist=crasnick_jerry&id=3131579&l pos=spotlight&lid=tab6pos1

Several Highlights

  • We aren't the only one's interested in Kuroda
  • Glendon Rusch's agent "has been fielding a lot of calls"
  • Mark Prior.  Enough Said.
  • Jason Marquis is listed under the heading "Salary Dumps". Interesting.
  • This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

    The only quote that matters...
If the Cubs decide to cut Prior loose, the line will stretch around the block. When asked how many clubs would have an interest in Prior if he's suddenly free in December, one NL executive replied, "Twenty-nine."

That alone is the reason to tender him.

So the Cubs pay him to rehab
and he walks after next year?  No thanks.  Either a 2 year deal now or let him walk.

    Bad Blood
The article does mention some 'hard feelings'.
I don't think the question is "Do the Cubs want Prior?", it's "Does Prior want to be a Cub?"

by steinmer on Nov 28, 2007 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

    It's a little of both, I think.
That's the reason, as someone else pointed out, that this "trade block" thing might have leaked. The Cubs are saying, "Yes, we want you, but we're not going to come crawling to you."

    Well Prior is....
Mark Prior is an employee...I have a feeling that comment still doesn't sit well in Cub offices.

    Prior's Employee Comment
I can't imagine the Cubs really give a tinker's damn that Prior exhibited frustration at being sent down. Who wouldn't say something like that in a similar situation? Mark just happens to have said that with microphones in his face.  BFD.

Wow that article made Silva seem really attractive
He's not a bad guy to kick the tires on.  If we could trade Marquis, that would be awesome.  He's not a bad guy to have starting at No. 4 or No. 5 but Hendry overpayed for him.

    You know we could be
Pirate fans and have that wonderful salary of Matt Morris hanging around your neck. What the Pirates were thinking only God knows, goodness.
Sign Prior, make a fair offer, 2yrs at 10M, laced with incentives.
If someone would take Marquis,(which I doubt), move him faster than Bob Hayes.

    I don't know
what a baseball fantasy is...maybe the Cubs winning the world series.

    I meant fantasy baseball.

Sure 29 teams would have interest
but the key is at what price?

I would think the bulk of those 29 would drop off if they also didn't have an option for 09.
