WARNING: NIU Threat

I just wanted to post this so people had an idea what is goin on at NIU tomarrow. Im posting so that you guys can contact any loved ones that attend Northern Illionis Univeristy.

(straight from NIU's website)

NIU officials are investigating a threat posted late Saturday evening in a campus residence hall which included a racial slur and references to the Virginia Tech shootings.

Written in black ink on a restroom wall in the Grant Towers D complex were two separate entries claiming that "things will change most hastily" in the final days of the current semester.

"Tell those n---ers to go home," the first entry reads. "ME / OUT ... Die Sem Burr 10th ... Hmz Sdn Cr." Officials believe the text message-style shorthand refers to "December 10" and "Holmes Student Center." Underlined letters within the first entry spell out the word "WATCH."

Following the initial entry is a second set of comments reading "What time? The VA tech shooters messed up w/ having only one shooter ..."

University leaders notified all students, faculty and staff about the threats through postings on the NIU website, all-campus email, voicemail, fliers and area news media. Security in and around the residence halls, student center and other campus buildings has also been increased, and the campus remains under a security alert through the end of the semester.

Additional communications and offers of assistance for students, faculty, staff and visitors will continue throughout the week. Updated information will be provided as it becomes available on the university website at www.niu.edu.

"My primary concern is for the safety of all members of our campus community, and to that end, we will err on the side of caution in all our actions," said NIU President John Peters. "We will not tolerate threats against individuals or groups," Peters said, "nor will we tolerate `hate speech' of any type on this campus."

Final exams will proceed as scheduled, and university officials said students and staff should remain "calm but vigilant." Anyone with information about the threats are urged to contact the NIU Tipline at (815) 753-TIPS, or their local Crimestoppers or law enforcement agency

( end of paste)

I hope everything turns out to be ok.

Freaks are all about ...
Now we can't go to shopping malls without the fear that some stupid copycat will try to unleash an AK-47 upon Christmas shoppers.  And the once pristine safety of the college campus has been ruined by one jerk (well at least since that incident at UTA so many years ago).

Practically half of my graduating class at Palatine High went to NIU.  Though I didn't go, I had a gang of friends who did.  Let's hope for the best and pray that sanity rules the day.

Yikes.

It's rediculous
I'm a student that lives on campus here at NIU. They closed the school down for Monday, imo its a good decision although I'm screwed now with my finals schedule because I'm leaving for Europe on wednesday. I hope everything returns to normal and those responsible get what they deserve.

For everyone's information...
... here's the NIU website page where you can get updates on this.

And I'll take this opportunity to give a shameless plug to my employer -- you can also get info on the ABC7 Chicago website or on this morning's newscast beginning at 5 am CT.

It turns out school is closed today.

My sister lives
in the Stevenson Towers there. She sent me an e mail with this in it yesterday with a little note that says "I'm sooooo glad I will be home on the 17th...". I am glad she will be too. Too bad I can't go get her myself today!

Really, what the hell is wrong with people??? What happened in their life or what combination of genes makes people snap and do crazy stuff like this to innocent people? I could even see a "regular" crazy person going after an ex girlfriend or teacher that failed them etc. Those are specific people, but just to randomly killing people is a special kind of nuts.

I graduated from NIU and moved
back to DeKalb with my fiancee (not on campus in a new condo development off Peace rd) but this is honestly scary.......why wouldn't you take this seriously.....

I'm an NIU alum...
...and, yeah, this is disturbing and sad. Wow, I even lived in Grant North one year, though I can't remember exactly which tower any more.

On the one hand, this could be an idiotic prank by some drunk/stoned psycho idiot -- I knew more than a few back in the day. (One guy we called "Reverand Rob" used to keep a samurai sword under his bed.) On the other, it could be real. The university appears to be handling the situation pretty well.

It's a
very sad world we live in. I hope this was a hoax and they find who wrote that stuff.

DeKalb High Grad (many moons ago)
and took some classes at NIU.  Hope they figure this out and no one gets hurt.  Prayers are with them.

To add to the matter
Its the first day of finals and campus had to be closed today. I Rather make up a test than walk around  looking over my shoulder all day.

AGREED
A lot of my friends at NIU are pissed that they have to make up a test on friday. I would be glad to stay an extra day to ensure my saftey.

hopefully
They don't cancel classes tomorrow as well. Some of my roommates finals which were canceled for today are now optional.

Optional finals?
Seriously? Then how do they get a final grade in the class?

you
get the grade you had going into the final

Doesn't seem fair....
... if you had planned on upping your grade by doing well on the final.

hence
the key word is "optional"

by luv4cubs2 on Dec 10, 2007 7:02 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I noticed that...
... just after I posted this. This must be something new... when I was in school, we never had "optional" finals.

re: I noticed that...
As mentioned above, I'm an NIU alum (attended 1990-1995), and I don't remember optional finals back in those days. Believe you me, if those were available, I'd probably have been hitting Otto's a week earlier more often than not.

Actually
I think you would be hard pressed to find a student who doesn't appreciate optional finals. In most cases if you are happy with your grade you do not have to study/take the exam. If you were hoping to increase your grade through the final you still have that option.

Thoughts and prayers
Thoughts and prayers for any BCBer and anyone else directly or indirectly affected by this.
We are all waiting for that glorious October night when we finally win it all. Until then we will continue to cheer, never do the wave and hope.

It's a nice sentiment
really, it is.

But no one was actually hurt. I don't think people need thoughts and prayers for being inconvenienced. If they did, I'd have my family make an animal sacrifice for me before every dmv visit.

At the same time...
... though nothing happened yesterday, we do not know if the danger has passed. Hopefully, with the publicity and the added security, nothing will happen at all.
