Randolph interested in Marquis? (Take two)

Sorry, technical difficulties.

From mlbtraderumors.com (Yeah I know:

"Would Mets Consider Marquis?

On November 29th, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick mentioned that the Cubs are "listening on Jason Marquis."  This would clearly be a salary dump, as Marquis will earn $16.25MM over 2008-09.

Since then we haven't heard of any teams interested in the 29 year-old righty.  However, Mets manager Willie Randolph brought up Marquis yesterday as a consideration for the team's rotation.  The article's author, Adam Rubin, added that the Cubs are fans of Endy Chavez.  It wouldn't be fair to equate the two players, however.

Hat tip to MetsBlog on this one."

You know...
I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I think Marquis has a lot of value to the right team (Mets included). You get a larger home park, with a plus infield defense, and you could do a lot worse. And if the Cubs were willing to pair the cost down to an effective 2/12 deal, absolutely. Better than Silva or Lohse at 4/40, IMO.

Mariners, D-Backs, Mets. Maybe the Rockies. Just a thought.

Rockies +Coors Field (81/162)+ Marquis (Fly Ball)
Im in Algebra 2 in H.S. and I dont think that equation cn be solved.  It can be simplified though....  HOME RUNS

I'm not surprised....
maybe you should look at the Marquis starts at Coors. They're limited, but rather good. Same for Chase. And Shea is bearable enough to consider as well.

Not sure if the Cubs have any interest in Chavez
but if Hendry views Marquis as excess, the Mets might be willing to take him and most of his salary especially if the Cubs didn't want much back.

Personally between Dempster and Marquis, I really wish Dempster would go first.  As a 5th starter, Marquis could be passable if only for the first half of the season.  Dempster in the rotation at all scares me.

Agreed II
Dempster should be on the block, not Marquis.  At the least Marquis can hit and pinch run, which aren't bad qualities for a 5th starter.  Don't forget how hot he was early in the year in '07 as well.  He tailed off bad but that seems like something that is fixable.

Dempster just worries me.  I'd guess if he and Marquis pitched the same number of innings next year against the same competition Marquis would have the better numbers.

Oh yeah
I forgot about all that "Dempster is a starter" stuff.  That gives us more flexibility in the rotation (if not more quality).

Yabbut
If the only interested buyer out there is Omar Minaya, think back to how well Dempster did his job in Shea Stadium last season.

Twasn't pretty.

The Cubs
might have to eat a little of that contract, but it really isn't out of line with what people are getting in the free agent market.

What are your other options?  Throwing a mint at Carlos Silva?

I know we like to rag on Marquis around here, and mostly with good cause, but the guy's ERA+ has been over 100 for three of the past four years.  He's not terrible--it is just we have better options in the minor leagues.  (The Mets probably do too, but let's not tell them.)

I'd go into the season with a rotation of Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Marshall and Gallagher/Hart.

I'd rather dump Dempter...
and keep Marquis.. I realize Marquis is signed for an extra year, but I think he can give the Cubs more as a starter than Dempster and the pen's fine w/out Dempster...

Seems Marquis ran outta gas last year..  Maybe Lou can limit his innings a bit more this upcoming year to save him for the final month..

God forbid one of the big three goes down
But if it happened, Marquis would start looking pretty damn good saving that bullpen some extra innings.

Yes, I absolutely love it when people save...
...the bullpen from the strenuous work of winning ballgames when they give up runs like water as soon as July comes and eliminate the need to care about preserving a lead.
