Cliffy Floyd to sign with a Florida team possibly soon...

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3152188

Haha, too bad its not going to help the Marlins.  The Rays and Floyd are reportedly closing in on a deal which would probably be Floyd's last team to play for, given the fact he was considering retirement after the NLDS.  Looks like Cliff will be back in the Friendly Confines this summer against the Cubs.  Your thoughts...

No, not really
but it is worth mentioning.  Al really needs to start an "Open Thread" area, where something like this would go, except that people would start a diary anyway.

So what are you going to do?

Damien Miller
mmmm Damien Miller might be an interesting pickup to backup Soto.

Interesting is a good choice of words.
It doesn't imply any sort of qualitative judgement. I could say that "Jabbing yourself in the gut with an ice pick is an interesting alternative to an apendectomy," and it would be entirely accurate.

Now, if I were to have used words like "good" or "desireable" or "not completely wasteful," then the accuracy goes down quite a bit. I mean, seriously, the ice pick is going to be 38 next season, couldn't hit worth a lick...

Oh, right, that's called "straining the metaphore." Sorry.

I would suggest you learn to truly interrupt all stats before using any selective stats. -- cubswin

I have absolutely
no idea what your point is here.  If you have one, you might want to make it better next time.

Well if your point
is that you think I'm stuck up, more power to you.

I honestly did not understand your first point.

Do you not understand that poorly written posts are not comprehensible by other people?

Probably not.

If you don't know...
... what a "sticky" is, it's used at some online forums for threads that "stick" to the top of the site rather than get pushed down to the bottom.

That's not the purpose of a site like this, so we're not going to do it.

Gotcha. I'd honestly never heard that term before. I thought maybe she meant some sort of virtual sticky note or something.

Cubs play the Rays in
St Pete this year so he will not be back at the friendly confines this year, unless of course the Cubs and Rays are in the WS.

Good for him.  He seems like a good guy but injuries have ruined his skills.  One last payday, fine with me.

He will be a good mentor
for all the young guys on that roster.

Huh?
I hope you're not serious.  Mentor them for what?  How to loaf after fly balls, jog to 1B on routine ground balls or walk to and from your position before and after each inning?  Good guy, incredibly lazy ballplayer.  Only saved by Fred McGriff as perhaps the laziest Cub of all-time.

I agree he probably is not much of a mentor, but
to call him incredibly lazy and invoke the curse of all time indifference in McGriff is a little harsh.  I never had the impression that Cliffy was/is lazy.  He always appeared to trying to save what remains of his legs and hustling when needed.  In a Floyd/Murton platoon, they had only two good knees between them and they both are pale with freckles.

by N Oakley on Dec 13, 2007 8:10 AM CST up reply actions

Thank you
for that insightful stupidity.

by rlpete on Dec 13, 2007 8:53 AM CST up reply actions

Mentor them
about how to act like a professional.  Yes, I believe Cliff Floyd is a quality individual off the field who will be able to relate to some of the Rays' young players, like BJ Upton.  Cliff was a more touted prospect than most of these guys, had a horrible injury early in his career, but persevered to play on championship teams.  He didn't leave his family or community behind, but also rose above challenges.

Sorry (for you) if you can't see any of that just because the guy had bum knees by the time we got him.

FWIW, I don't think Floyd will hit very well this year.

by cubzfan on Dec 13, 2007 9:43 AM CST up reply actions

The only thing...
... that might help Floyd in 2008, is that he will be able to DH in many games, thus saving his knees.

He has 42 games at DH in his career, a little less than half of those (19) as a member of the Red Sox in 2002. Career split as DH: .289/.353/.506 in 166 at-bats, compared to his overall career numbers of .279/.359/.484.

If Floyd was a (nearly) fulltime DH and put up an .859 OPS, I think the Rays would be quite satisfied with his performance.

Good for Floyd!
He's oing to the right state for a guy who should retire.  Does Tampa offer an early bird special in the clubhouse before games?

Floyd was a class act here, good luck to him.

by DudeVf11 on Dec 13, 2007 8:47 AM CST reply actions

Really
Maybe he didn't produce at the plate like we all wanted him to this summer, but I liked his enthusiasm and spirit. I also wish him well next year with his future club.

by JFCubFan on Dec 13, 2007 10:26 AM CST up reply actions

Oh, and about Cliff Floyd...
...good luck, Godspeed, may the Force be with you, etc. I agree that DH would be ideal for him. Cliff indeed seems like a great guy, very open with the press, probably a excellent clubhouse guy. But if I had to name "Disappointment of the Season" for '07 it would be Cliff. He just never brought the power he should have.
