As I sometimes come to this BCB community, because of Dome became a Cub as the first free agent player to MLB from my team for lifetime, Chunichi Dragons, recently I just remembered the very first MLB game I watched was Cubs game... back in 1983.
It was Cubs-Dodgers at LA, and Cubs win 10-0, and I was among 44,852 attendance on Jul 17, 1983. Here is some photos from old album.
Dickie Noles tossed 7-hit shutout, Bill Buckner hit a big homerun and the Cubs offence was unstoppable against Bob Welch, who won 15 games in that year. I remember many of Dodger fans left before 7th inning, and it was a very, very hot Sunday afternoon in downtown LA.
Almost a quarter of a century since then, my Dragons finally became Japan Series Champions first time in 53 years after seven challenges, capped by a dramatic combined perfect game in the clincher Game 5. Unfortunately Dome was not in playoff games because of elbow surgery, but he definitely helped the team until August, and especially last 4 winning years with a couple of batting and fielding titles including memorable MVP award in 2006 to win Central League (Japanese equivalent of NL).
It is too regretful for us Dragons fans to lose him, and I will miss him next spring training in my hometown, Chatan, Okinawa.
But it is good and understandable for him to pursuit his personal athleticability, and it's too cool if he can help Cubs to win World Series since 1908.
53 years and 100 years - both Cubs and Dragons fans had to suffer too much patience for too long bitter time. Some of you may know Dragons' bad records in past Japan Series, and some of us know about Steve Bartman incident.
But We Dragons overcame and finally did it with great effort and hard work.
Now it's your turn with Dome.
Happy holidays, and wish a great new year to you all.
BTW, "Dome" (DOUGH-May) is Fukudome's nickname for Dragons fans' community for last 9 years, and I strongly suggest you folks to use this rather than "Fuku" - there are too many Japanese family names starting with Fuku, including Fukumori who just joined Rangers as a relief pitcher. "Dome" is identical.
