Monday Morning Rumor Mill

Another day, another rumor mill. With the winter meetings about to commence, there's a lot to talk about.

Jim Hendry talks to the local press before the meetings. Here's the Sun-Times piece, here's the counterpart from the Trib, and here's Bruce Miles. All essentially say the same thing; Bruce just sounds more skeptical than the others. The sum-up:

  • The Cubs like Matt Murton;  it would "be a lot easier if he was left handed." Sigh.
  • Not necessarily looking for power, a "higher average" would be beneficial as well. I'm just going to pretend that Hendry means On Base Average.
  • Something will probably happen at the meetings, although he won't commit to having a new outfielder.
  • If something not Fukudome the Cubs like presents itself for right field, the Cubs are not affraid to make a deal.
  • Prior could be gone by week's end.
  • Baseball Prospectus's John Perrotto runs down every team's position before the meetings. Players we have on the block: Ronny Cedeno, Neal Cotts, Ryan Dempster, Will Ohman, Carmen Pignatiello, Jason Marquis, Sean Marshall and Matt Murton. Also, he says the Cubs are trying to find a #2 starter. Best of luck with that, I guess.

Erik Bedard won't sign an extension with the Orioles, which may mean the O's more seriously consider trading him.

The Rockies are looking to acquire Will Ohman. Let them, I say. Of the players Rockies are looking to deal, there's three infielders: Jamey Carrol, Clint Barmes and Jeff Baker. It may well not harm the Cubs to try and buy low on Barmes and revive his career in Chicago. You love middle infielders, Jim!

The Padres are in on Fukudome, and they view him as a center fielder. This does not make me happy.

Update [2007-12-3 14:10:4 by cwyers]:Ken Rosenthal has more on Brian Roberts. Nothing much -- the Cubs may be interested, and the Orioles may deal him. But hey, it's something.
