Andruw Jones

Look, I know everyones set on getting Fukudome, and don't get me wrong, I would love to get his bat in this lineup, but how about we talk about Andruw. I think a one or two year deal around 30 million and up would be fair. His skills are diminishing, but he his has some pop in his bat, and a powerful bat like his would really help this lineup. Of course, Pie would have to move to right for a year or two, but he could get a lot of help in all ways from Jones, then when his contract runs out, Pie could move back to center. Here are the downsides of acquiring Jones. It would take at least somewhere around 18-20 million per year. It would also block Pie from center for awhile and finally, it wouldn't be the left-handed bat Piniella is apparently craving. What do you think?

You may think it's fair
but Andruw is represented by Scott Boras, who is telling everyone that Jones deserves a bigger deal than Torii Hunter.

There is almost zero chance that Jones would sign the contract you propose.  He wants four or five years and someone will offer him that.  Kansas City will certainly step in if no one else does.

On that note...
...does anyone have any idea what the Royals are thinking? The AL Central is turning into a full-on demilitarized zone with the Cabrerra trade; do they serious think they can add on a few spare parts and squeak in that division somehow?

I'm not sure your metaphor makes sense.
Do you mean that everybody in the AL Central is signing/trading for people, or that their trading away all their prospects?

We've...
...covered this ground before. Agh.

Seriously, this is painful. Perhaps more painful than Nickler's diary about Aaron Rowand. Please. Stop.

The short version: we've finally hit a point where mostly we're talking about players where we have at least one or two media reports about the Cubs actually being interested in them. Please, PLEASE can we keep it that way?

If You Don't Like A Diary,
why do you have to respond to it. Nobody is forcing you to have a conversation about anything.

Posting
redundant and/or short diaries pushes more worthy diaries off the front page, which usually ends all discussion in them.   Other diaries can get lost among several others.

So it's not just a matter of "Don't read it."  It's an issue that affects everyone on the site.

Without taking a stand on this particular diary, posting of unworthy diaries is starting to be a problem around here.

Especially since the arrival of Baseball Christmas
means that it's silly season in the baseball blogosphere; MLB Trade Rumors is officially trying to see if it can run the Internet out of bytes.

For less frequent visitors to the site (I'm on vacation for the rest of the week, so I have plenty of time to indulge my fancy for more baseball rumors than are truly healthy for me), it can also be a real bear to come back to the site and sort through the diaries to figure out which ones are informative and which are the traditional one-paragraph gripe-fests that really could fall under some other post.

This is one good reason...
... why a lot of these things could be posted under the daily "Rumor Mill" diaries. Yes, I could start an "Open Thread" each day for the winter meetings, but I've kind of been of the mind to steer the discussion in another direction each day.

If people could post these things under the "Rumor Mill", which kind of serves as an open thread -- and maybe, cwyers, you could even title them as such -- that would help a lot.

Thanks.

I Understand What You're Saying
It just seems like there could be a nicer way to let someone know they are posting a redundant diary. It's almost like a contest to shoot down someone's "unworthy" diary.

maybe al can post ..
something about this in the morning. i'd venture to guess there are thousands of posters here. if you dont post on a subject within about 2 minutes of it happening theirs probably a pretty good chance its already been posted somewhere on here.

It's a fair question...
much like Kevin Millwood and Jeff Weaver in recent years, I think Scott may be backing his player into a corner that he can't get them out of. With glut of CFs out there (and other guys starting to market themselves as a CF solution), this could get bad for Andruw.

That said, I think it's a good fit. He's still an above average fielder covering a small home park, and I think the next few years will probably look more like his career norms. If you could lock in on a one year deal, or 3 guaranteed...it's a decent backup plan. Past that, I say pass.

If Andruw gets to the point
where he'll talk a one-year deal, the Cubs should consider it, because then, in theory, they could trade Pie in a package for a top pitcher.  The problem is that by the time Andruw would get to that point, all the top pitchers would be off the market, so it's not really going to work.

by DGU on Dec 4, 2007 8:21 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No
they shouldn't consider it. The Cubs have too many right handed power bats with low OBPs. Jones does not address the Cubs lopsided offense, he makes it even less dynamic.

Jones helps with the glove and the bat
the facts that he strikes out a lot and is right-handed are incidental compared to that.  Yes, Fukudome is a better option.  Yes, there are other better trade options.  But Jones being right-handed and striking out is better than being the lefty Ibanez and having no defensive skills and worse with the bat.

Look, I'd probably sign Brad Wilkerson before signing Jones, but to not consider Jones on a one year deal is short-sighted.

by DGU on Dec 4, 2007 10:15 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

As per the initial post
You say you're on board with getting Fukodome, but then you say get Andruw and move Pie to right? Or do you mean go with this as a backup if you don't get Fukudome?

I expect Jones to rebound nicely, but his D is slipping somewhat. And not only does he not fit the left handed criteria Hendry and Piniella have set, but he's also the type of hitter we don't need any more of. Home runs are only worth so much if you essentially give half of the rest of your at-bats away. We need guys who are multi-faceted.

by JDay on Dec 4, 2007 8:35 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Like you said
he's not a lefty.

And make no mistake, we need a power left-handed bat.
