Andruw to Dodgers

Appears as if the Dodgers have bought themselves another CF with depreciating skills. That Juan Pierre signing looks even more dumb, and I didnt think that was possible.

This has to sting our south-side friends. This was probably their Plan D.

  1. Hunter - Angels
  2. Cabrera - Tigers
  3. Rowand -(My guess is they sign him for too much)
  4. Andruw - Dodgers

Disagree
This was a very good signing for the Dodgers.  To sign a player of Jones' talent and age for just two years is shocking in this market, no matter how down his numbers were last year.

Scott Boras is not looking so good this offseason.

Your feelings on...
... Jones continually high strike-out totals, his really mediocre 2007 as well as his diminishing defensive abilities?

Listen to some of the folks who talk to scouts and there is some real concern about Jones as he nears the age of 30. I'm glad the Dodgers are taking this risk and not the Cubs. The fact that Jones is going to have to try to reestablish his power potential in Dodger Stadium as he tries to land a big contract just doesn't make a ton of sense.

Yes, and usually
players right before their contract year explode offensively, usually having close to career years.  But Jones, on the other hand, had by far his worst year and perhaps one of the worst year's in all of baseball for a regular position player.

I mean, come on,  .2-freaking-20 BA?!  And he get almost 20 mil a season?!

Your criticisms of Jones
2007 are right.

As far as his diminished defensive abilities, I think those reports are generally overdone.  Regardless, the one good thing about Juan Pierre is his speed, which will reduce the need for Jones to cover as much ground. (Speaking of which, is there a worse offensive left fielder than Juan Pierre?)

More importantly, high strikeout totals or not, if Jones can, and I think it's reasonable to assume he can, return to anything resembling the five years prior to 2007, the Dodgers got themselves an outstanding deal.

If you limit yourself to qualified batters...
...then he would have been, yes, most definitely.

Yeah, but at least his ego is still intact
Here's this little nugget from ESPN's winter meeting blog:

"Some baseball people believe that the $36.2 million deal for Andruw Jones was Scott Boras' way of making sure that Jones' contract exceeds Torii Hunter's contract in average annual value. Jones will make $18.1 million a season compared to Hunter's $18 million per year with the Angels."

Gotta love these little mind games...  ;-)

Remember
Colletti did the same thing with Furcal.  Big money, but short contract.  Seems kind of desparate, but doesn't tie you up later on.  Especially when your big contracts are back loaded(i.e. Jim Hendry).

Andruw Jones is trash
This is a terrible deal for the Dodgers. About as dumb a deal as the Pierre deal. Well, maybe not because they're not committed to him for 5 years but the dollars a year is atrocious. His power numbers will go down playing in LA and then you're left with a guy who'll be hitting .270 at best with 25 HR's and 85 RBi's and striking out over 100+ and that's the rosy colored outlook for his number. Certainly not terrible numbers but for that amount per, the numbers certainly don't justify the deal.

Another terrible deal for the Dodgers.

25 Hr's way too generous.
Playing in LA he'll be lucky to hit 20. He hit 16 Hr's in ATL compared to just 10 on the road. Like i've said before, the league is onto this guy that he can not hit a breaking ball to save his life. He will continue to see a steady diet of off speed pitches.I can't wait to see this train wreck in LA next season.

I had to laugh
when I read that Juan Pierre would be playing left field. I think my fat mother-in-law could tag and score on a short fly to left...

There are two lessons here
First is that the Dodgers are a poorly run team.

Second is that big money for weak hitting CF's (I'm talking about you Juan Pierre and Gary Matthews)is a waste.

Anyone else think it's a weird coincidence that both the Angels and Dodgers signed "marquee" CF's in each of the last two years?  What are they trying to corner the market?

I have serious issues with Jones, especially at $18+ million per year, but getting him for only two years limits the damage.  His defense is overrated, there was a good article last summer about it, I think it was from Jason Stark (and that guy NEVER writes anything good!).  Maybe it was an excerpt from a book he wrote or something but the gist was that Jones doesn't get to nearly as many balls as he used to.  As for Jones hitting, he was never a great hitter, home runs aside.  I have no idea what caused his struggles last year but if it were as simple as the league figuring out that he couldn't hit a breaking ball I have to think that would have been discovered years ago.  Nope, try again.  There's something else going on.  Maybe it was contract stress?  Maybe he was injured?  Bad luck?  Whatever it is, Dodger Stadium isn't going to help him.  He should have taken below market to go to Philly or Texas for a year or two to reestablish his value and hit the market again in a year where there won't be so many CF's available.  Guess he just wanted the money.......

During the 2008 season...
...the city of Los Angeles will be paying over $42 million for center fielders.

That's a lot of money.

And don't forget...
... that the Dodgers invested $45 million in Juan Pierre just a year ago to play CF, and now he'll have to play LF.

That's a lot of money for that sort of production, plus it pushes some of the more talented Dodger kids to the bench, or to be traded.

Think Matt Kemp might be available now?

Kemp
Thanks for bringing it up Al. Does the singing of Jones mean either Kemp or Ethier will be moved? I know Ethier is a RF, but the outfield is looking pretty crowded.

Kemp could be used to get Bedard.

True
If Bedard gets moved elsewhere would a package of Marshall/Gallagher/ prospects be enough to peek there interest?

I'm not sure what Kemp would command on the market or what the Cubs would want to part with, but he could be an interesting option.
