I often rely on Retrosheet often for historical information, and there are literally hundreds of Retrosheet links on this site, going back, in fact, to the very beginning of BCB.
Thus, I was a little distressed to read this email from Dave Smith, the head of Retrosheet, posted to a SABR email list to which I subscribe:The email I posted here has been removed at Dave Smith's request. Essentially, what has happened is that due to a Retrosheet server change, all their boxscore and player record links have been changed. Here's the general format change for Retrosheet links:
A link that used to read:
And a player's record link that used to read, for example, Sandy Koufax's:
The upshot of all of this is that any old Retrosheet link you have either saved or posted is now broken.
Well, maybe, except for this: it's not just people who "bookmark" Retrosheet links who are affected by this; it's sites like BCB and others, who have literally hundreds of Retrosheet links in old posts, ALL of which will now be broken.
I've emailed Dave Smith about this and will let you know what I hear back from him. If you are looking through BCB and click on a Retrosheet link and don't get what you want, this is the reason. Frankly, for a site this large that is relied upon by so many researchers and casual fans alike, changing the URLs of hundreds of thousands of files is a terrible idea.
UPDATE [2007-2-10 11:34:51 by Al]: I had also posted a reply from Dave Smith that he requested I remove from the site. If any of you have any information on how to help out Retrosheet, please let me know.
