Ron Santo BELONGS IN COOPERSTOWN!
Al,
Thank you for your tremendously inspiring and laudatory account of my favorite Cubs player of all time!
Yes, I will ALWAYS acknowledge that Ernie IS Mr. Cub, but as one of our posts indicated, perhaps view Ron as Mr. Cub 2.
Well, I really would like to piggyback on Al's suggestion and aptly described tribute to Ron Santo: 'He's one of us!', 'He epitomizes BleedCubbieBlue!' YES! and Dennis Franz in 'This Old Cub' agreed!
Let's give Ron the absolutely deserved and well-earned distinction of being FOREVER referred to as "Mr. BleedCubbieBlue" !!!
I vowed in one of the HOF petitions that I will NEVER step foot into the Hall of Fame UNTIL AND UNLESS Ron Santo is elected - and I have always treasured and cherished making that trip. But without Ron's inclusion in Cooperstown, in my eyes and heart, the Hall will remain an empty hollow structure: a mere shadow of a building that represents THE injustice foisted by an utter lack of convictions and class among those members who disgracefully have prevented Ron's inclusion.
Let's hope and pray that Ron will FINALLY get to really re-celebrate his birthday later this month with the honor that has unfathomably and undeservedly alluded him for all too many agonizing years! Even Mike Schmidt has reconsidered his narrow view of who deserves HOF status! Perhaps 2007 will be the end of the drought for everything Cubs!
Ron Santo represents the very brick and mortar which will allow the HOF to once again shine proudly as the hallowed place it was chartered to be!
Ron Santo BELONGS IN COOPERSTOWN!

You make...
Mike Schmidt came out not long ago saying that given the steroids problem, there is a possible need to re-evaluate what exactly the Hall of Fame means or celebrates. Certainly compared to suspected steroids users like McGwire, Canseco, Palmeiro, and (as it pains me to say) Sosa, I wonder if the HoF voters on the Veteran's Committee will now take a new view of Santo.
A lot of forces coming together at once in his favor - the desire to celebrate untainted baseball excellence due to steroids, the desire to put on a great HoF Induction to remove some of the steroid cloud, the possibility that the Veteran's Committee gets permanently disbanded if it doesn't admit anyone (a real threat, and trust me, NO voting body likes to give up power), and guys like Sandberg now with the vote all spell an increased chance that Ronnie makes it, if you ask me.
I surely hope so...there are not a lot of third basemen in the Hall of Fame, and Santo is one of the best....

Um...
But I will repeat it here anyway. Voting is going on RIGHT NOW!!!
Results are to be announced in two weeks, on Feb. 27. So better send expensive gifts to the committee members NOW.

Santo...
The new VC has not inducted anyone in two tries. There's some feeling that if they don't do anything this time, they might be disbanded.
