Guessing the Top 4

Yeah I know we keep doing this but it is fun.  Here are the possible combinations:

  1. Sandberg Sosa Anson Banks
  2. Sandberg Sosa Banks Anson
  3. Sandberg Anson Sosa Banks
  4. Sandberg Banks Sosa Anson
  5. Sandberg Anson Banks Sosa
  6. Sandberg Banks Anson Sosa
  7. Sosa Sandberg Anson Banks
  8. Sosa Sandberg Banks Anson
  9. Anson Sandberg Sosa Banks
  10. Banks Sandberg Sosa Anson
  11. Anson Sandberg Banks Sosa
  12. Banks Sandberg Anson Sosa
  13. Sosa Anson Sandberg Banks
  14. Sosa Banks Sandberg Anson
  15. Anson Sosa Sandberg Banks
  16. Banks Sosa Sandberg Anson
  17. Anson Banks Sandberg Sosa
  18. Banks Anson Sandberg Sosa
  19. Sosa Anson Banks Sandberg
  20. Sosa Banks Anson Sandberg
  21. Anson Sosa Banks Sandberg
  22. Banks Sosa Anson Sandberg
  23. Anson Banks Sosa Sandberg
  24. Banks Anson Sosa Sandberg
I tend to think it will be Anson/Sosa in the 3/4 or vice versa, and Banks/Sandberg in the 1/2, or vice versa.  Anyone care to throw out another guess, since nobody has gotten it right yet?  I'm picking line #19, or perhaps #21.

Update [2007-2-14 10:36:26 by gravedigger]: I intended these lists to be read from 4 to 1; so, for instance, #24 would have Banks at #4 and Sandberg at #1.

#10!

Regardless, Mr. Cub just HAS to be #1, baby.

Switch 'em up
Gravedigger has the first name as #4 and the last as #1

I'll go with #21.

  1. Sandberg
  2. Banks
  3. Sosa
  4. Anson

OK

Then I go with #15.
  1. Banks
  2. Sandberg
  3. Sosa
  4. Anson

My guess
Anson, Banks, Sandberg Sosa

I love Banks, but Anson was the foundation on which the Cubs were built.  Ernie is my all time favorite player, he is Mr. Cubs, but historically speaking, Cap Anson is #1.  The only thing that might knock him down a notch is his racist tendencies that help keep black players out of the majors for decades.

My guess...
  1. Banks
  2. Anson
  3. Sosa
  4. Sandberg
(A while back the listmaster/blogmeister (in a rare moment of weakness) allegedly let slip Sosa's final position on the master list. But for the life of me (or maybe the Miller Lites in me?) I can't remember if it was 2, 3 or 4--I'm pretty sure it wasnt #1. Pretty sure...)

by bison on Feb 14, 2007 10:27 AM CST reply actions

My guess is...
  1.  Banks
  2.  Sosa
  3.  Anson
  4.  Sandberg
Reasoning: Banks is "Mr. Cub" and did put up huge numbers (HRs) far in excess of any player up to that time (for the Cubs). He is just a class act.

Sosa would be #1 if he hadn't pooped-out on the organization like he did in his last game. His power numbers dwarf even Banks and being the only person to ever have 3 seasons of 60 or more HRs is just freaking incredible! Even Babe Ruth didn't do that! For many years, he was to the Cubs what Babe Ruth was to the Yankees.

Anson at #3 because he was phenomonal, yet played in a different era which is somewhat hard to compare.

Sandberg at #4 because his career numbers don't make him the best player ever in a Cubs uniform.

If you think you've seen it all...just wait!

You might be onto something with that list. Good reasoning.

Not sure
Anson had great numbers and could be #1; Sandberg, as all cubs fans know, was the greatest second baseman of all time; Sammy (sighing and reluctantly saying) did energize baseball and hit a lot of HR's; Banks is probably #1, but??? I guess I go for Banks #1 but can't read Al's mind on the rest.

I shouldn't have even brought it up. The #1 profile will be posted on Sunday.

I actually mentioned that later in that thread.  You and I seem to say the same things all the time.

I'd be worried if I were you.

My guess..Sosa=4, Sandburg=3, Anson=2, Banks=1
Sosa could have been next to Banks except for his vitamin work and his cork and his left behind feeling.

Over the years his stature will fall even more and possibly out of the top ten regardless of some of the most incredible years between '97 and '93.

Sandburg like Williams was the quintessential all around baseball player...clutch and smooth, defensive excellence and offensively a leader.

Anson is before my time but his champion credentials and in time performance is incredible but then there was Ernie...

In the dead ball era....512 HR's most as a SS....MVP not once but twice as a SS, only AROD has more offensive power than Banks. He carried the Cubs to the great late '60's team where he was still the dangerous #5 hitter in advanced age.

Best Harry moment: 'Hey there's Marla without her shorts on!'
