Who had Feb 15th? (HEY! This Is The Kerry Wood Injury Diary! Stop Posting More Wood Diaries!)

Kerry Wood takes a minor spill

ok, I love Kerry Wood, and writing this diary hurts me a little because I think he's going to have a good year.  But really, its the first day and already someone is injured?  Where's some of that kool-aid, I need a dose of optimism.

Don't worry though, he went to practice today and participated, so hopefully this is nothing more than a minor bruising of the ego for slipping in his tub.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

What is the DEAL?
Can't we even get ONE DAY into camp before someone gets hurt?

Sheesh. Someone better escort these guys from home to the ballpark. Next it'll be a car accident or something.

Well, don't forget, it's a pitcher.
We can easily go one day without a position player getting hurt, but a pitcher, well...

I bet there was a towel involved, too.

bumps and bruises
wet floor...maybe oozzie from the warmth, says he fell on his tummy and chest....

I have reason that this was nothing but a scare.

If...IFFFFFFF.....Wood is indeed healthy I can see him being the monster in the 9th, Wood as we discussed has the STRUTTIN mindset to come in and intimidate like Eck or the Goose.

I can see Woodie throwing an occassional high and close heater that keeps rising up and in....

So he is 30#'s lighter...and no NutraSystem commercial....

I hope it wasn't trimspa

I'm sure you know this...
...but I probably agree with the guys over at 1060 FAR more often than I do you and many of the posters here -- but I think that there's a far greater diversity of opinion here than there.  In fact, it is that diversity of opinion, and the sense of community that has formed around those differences, that makes BCB the far superior blog.

I read 1060 frequently, but I never post.  To them, being right is far more important than anything else, including enjoying ones self.

I've been there
once or twice, but I kept imagining a bunch of people puffing out their chests and sqauring their shoulders.  I couldn't take them seriously.  I felt like they would insult me because I may not have as great a background on all things stats-related or something.

Sadly, you're probably right
That's why I don't participate over there.  The funny thing is, they attack Al and say that if you deviate from his opinion, he'll ban you or whatever - which is obviously not true, since Al and I have diametrically opposed opinions on this team, its makeup, its future, and a whole host of other issues.  However, I think that if you deviate from their line, you're called a lemming, a Pollyanna, or whatever.  Even though I agree with the way they analyze the team and agree with many of their conclusions, I don't like the arrogant, condescending, holier than thou, hypocritical attitude they all have.

that I really don't look at stats or anything.  I'm one of the blind loyalty types.  But since I've been here, I'm starting to get the concept and look more at them.  When I visited there, it was all way over my head and arrogant.  It just turned me away...

And you're right, I can agree and disagree here as much as I want, without fear of being personally insulted.  Unless I start it first, that is...

I got turned away too...
and I posted there a long time. I wanted to kind of add another perspective to their site.

However, I found myself sticking up for my favorite blog a lot, and sometimes that got me in trouble.

I didn't look at stats because I'm lazy.  I often thought they where overwhelming and confusing, but I also found that hard to believe since I am in a stats class and very good at math.  They are actually simple if you try to figure them out, and that's how things like VORP entered my world.

by sparkles721 on Feb 15, 2007 9:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That is the thing
I would love to talk to those guys about baseball - stats, team construction, etc.  But the thing is, it inevitably comes back to "haha, look at the morons at BCB" for having fun, or for Al stating one of his opinions.  I love reading Al's site, because his opinions are so strong, and they come from the strongest fan devotion I've ever seen.  I don't often agree with him, but I don't laugh at or ridicule him (again, Marquis is the exception).  His opinions are his opinions, and they usually have some semblance of logic.  I just use different reasoning to reach different conclusions.  That doesn't make anyone that posts here a moron.

All this babbling is just my way of saying that while they are often right, they are dicks about it, and I wouldn't end up talking baseball there, I'd end up defending Al and the other posters at BCB.  I spend all my time here posting, I don't have time for all of that over there.

I'd say it is what happens...
...when reality hits some people.

What I think you mean, anyway, is that more people are more carefully analyzing the situation and coming to disappointing and negative conclusions.  I don't think there's anything wrong with that.  The problem I have is when those people tell the other people that they are stupid morons for thinking what they think.

Ah, again with this post-modern thinking.  I need to stop reading these anthropology papers.

Not really,
it was actually my nice way of saying "Suck it up".  Or.. "If you can't stand the heat, don't be a Cubs fan." ;)

Optimism does not mean you don't live in reality.  On the contrary, it means you choose to believe the future will outshine the reality.  "In the relationship between fans and baseball, as in other love affairs, realism need not mean the end of romance".

It's great to have differing opinions.  I'll always encourage that.  It just seems like one seems to be outweighing the others.  It's always nice to have balance.

Me on the other hand, I am of course devastated by this and have written strongly worded letters to both Whirpool AND Jacuzzi, whoever provided Woody with that death trap!!

I can only hope that Kerry will use this tragedy to educate young people across the country about the terrors of hot tubs and their related infuries.  For just a dollar a day you too can help put an end to this epidemic by providing grammama handrails and foot shaped tub treads for your favorite mlb pitcher.

I can never believe...
... that anyone is telling the truth about accidents at home causing injuries. Like when Clint Barmes lied about carrying too much deer meat up his steps and falling. I think maybe Kerry and his wife got a bit wild last night and he fell over while locked in the "wheelbarrow". I mean, I'm accident prone, and I can get out of a hot tub drunk without injuring myself.

Honestly, way to go, Kerry. You'd think, after all those towel drills, he'd be familiar enough with the towel's drying properties to use it to dry his feet and the floor before climbing out of the tub.

This, of course, all reminds me...
...of the Great Cubs Blog Schism.  Generally mischaracterized as the optimists vs. pessimists, there do seem to be two camps; those who believe that you should keep the faith and be patient and eventually they'll all win if we all cheer hard enough, and then the other side that says that this team doesn't even want to win, so why bother getting your hopes up.

I'm seriously overgeneralizing both sides, but there is an unquestionable divide there.  Fans approach the game differently.  I'm not optimistic about this season, Al is.  But I think that BCB is tolerant of both sides, which is why I don't comment at (though I do read) those "other" sites.

Maybe it's just me...
but I see the people that don't believe in their teams kind of as bandwagon fans at the end of the year if their team makes it to playoffs.

Anyway, I only see people as bandwagon fans when they are extreme pessimists.  I don't know if it's due to past BCBers or the way you write, but I don't think you(or progs) are pessimistic enough for me to see you as a bandwagon fan later on in the year if the Cubs make playoffs.

Last year I had my hopes up, and I fell flat on my face with disappointmen thanks to that wonderful team.  This year, I said I wouldn't get my hopes up to high so I wouldn't get disappointed, but it doesn't work. Optimism is such a fun thing to have.

Any video?
I want to know if there's any videos of this esp with Kerry's hot new bod.

I hate to say it but I had to laugh when this was announced.  Especially since it seems to be not serious.

If it was Prior he would have fallen down and gotten a severe concussion and his arm had fallen off.

Actually knowing our luck it would have been Zambrano visiting the Woods to celebrate his new contract falling out of the tub and breaking his arm in a trillion pieces.

Are you trying to say that Prior is more injury prone than Wood? I'm going to have to say both are annoyingly prone to injuries whether accidents or not. I have a feeling both will never pitch well for the Cubs again. I hope I am wrong...

I follow the A's out here on the West Coast and they have had their share of recurring injuries. But their biggest problem is Milton Bradley.
They almost need a traveling psychiatrist to go with the team on road trips.

But then that only goes to show that she thought this place to be a dump.

That aside, there's some strange-looking empty spaces throughout my home now.

It's like the fat ex-wife/fiancee took that half-of-everything stuff literally.

Like for instance, half the stairs are gone.

So is half the dog.

if one will indulge a wee bit of nerdiness...
...remember the part in Lord of the Rings (oh god, the NERDINESS!), where they're in those caverns with the scary sounding name, and the Whip Demon was after them and there was this really skinny staircase that crumbled away and they had to jump it?

Imagine that as my staircase only without the Whip Demon (she took him too), hobbits and their retinue. Oh, and I have no jumping ability whatsoever.

So, I've basically given up on the upstairs, and whomever else is up there calling for help. I've told them they are on their own.

Speaking of which
Just out of curiousity i saw 1060 mentioned up there as a good Cubs blog.

While I am not a big 1060 fan, self righteousness never really appealed to me, What is your favorite Cub blog OTHER than BCB?

I had to add the caveat as not to upset the bear.

My favorite blog OTHER than BCB, is www.desipio.com

Andy Dolan is the writer.

The reason I enjoy that blog so much is Mr. Dolan's sense of humour paired with his loves of the game.

Desipio.com is the source of the official Hank White Fan Club.

The Cub Reporter
The Cub Reporter has the most in depth knowledgeable discussion of the Cubs and their farm systems/daily transactions.

BCB's strength is Al's write-ups of the games and their timeliness of being released within a few hours of the game.

So for me the best cubs blog in the offseason is The Cub Reporter and during the season it's this one.  However, there is enough time to read both all season :)
