Julie's BCB Smack Talk League

This diary is for ksucubbie, so he doesn't get in trouble at work. ;)

Here are the issues we need to resolve:

  1. League name
  2. mixed league or NL only?
  3. free or pay league?
  4. online or offline draft?
  5. if online, what nights are people available?
  6. what are you guys getting me for my birthday?
I propose the following:
  1. Acolytes of the Scarlet Witch (heh)
  2. mixed
  3. free, but with a prize to the winner (a la Tom's suggestion)
4/5) online, the sunday night before the season starts. approx. 8:00 CST. Drinks shall be required.

6) surprise me

You're welcome.

Anyway, I vote yes on items 1 through 5, as per your suggestions.

On #6, well, you'll just have to wait and be surprised!

I concur with Julie's suggestion...
...ONLINE DRAFT A MUST! There has to be a way we can work out one night together to do a draft. They usually take no more than 90 minutes. Sometimes less. I play in another league with old college buddies spread out all over the country and if those flakejobs and I can figure out a day or night where we can draft together, so can all of us.

And make it free...

And it had better be mixed...God help you all if it is NL only...

Draft times go fast
On March 25th the only slots are between 9-11 am Eastern time.

by baturkey on Feb 16, 2007 2:18 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

That's odd.
Why should they have "slots"? Why shouldn't you be able to draft when you want?

We don't have to draft through them
If we wanted, I can set up an MSNBC group for us and we could do it via chat. That would be tons of fun. Then we just enter the names manually later.

well, i had like 8 league names
written in a diary, and when i went to submit it, it said the diary didn't exist anymore. i guess julie deleted that one and started this one. booooo. now i can't remeber all that creative genius.

i vote for a free league with money donated for prizes (like ten dollars each). i vote for an offline draft since its hard to get people together and hard to get time slots unless you do the pay league. and i will be ok with a mixed league, but only if some of my other demands are met.

and i definitely do not vote for julies league name, since all my ideas were deleted by her and her evil raven-haired ways.

how bout "The official BCB Fantasy Baseball League of the 2007 National League Champion Chicago Cubs" in homage to the firehouse etc that dubbed themselves the official everything of the 98 team, if people remember that. or beyone the ivy is fine. or Lou's Blues. Or the lou crew. Or "Little Miss Sunshine: The True Story of Mark Prior". "The 2007 Cubs Rotation: An Inconvenient Truth"

I'm severely disappointed already...
...nobody seems to be even trying to make a live draft work.

I hereby break out the first of what appears to be many "tsk tsk"'s this year.

TSK TSK.

A chat room?

It's virtually the same thing as a live draft!

You CAN "chat" while you "draft" in Yahoo Live Draft. It's not some silent-auction-make-sinister-faces-at-your-oppoent-while-you-choose type thing. Yahoo thought of everything except incorporating bubble wrap porn somehow.

Again, I fail to see how we can't get 10 BCB nuts who practically live on this blog, to get together for ONE HOUR and draft players and talk smack.

Unacceptable. Trust me, we do weird chat room draft it will be an unmitigated disaster and I will chortle at all of you who thought it would be such a great idea, especially when some goof tries to draft Aramis Ramirez after somebody else already took him a day earlier.

Live draft is simple. It is good. It will keep you sane.

Move to reconsider. Please.

*I* want to do a live draft!!!!!
I don't know why we couldn't all be there. There's only 10 of us. And it's not like we are going to set it up and never mention it again. I will assume that there will be much smack talking leading up to the draft date, thus providing a gentle reminder of the time and place.

The only reason I suggested a chat room is because we pick the time and place, as opposed to being a slave to Yahoo.  I KNOW it's the same thing--I'm trying to provide a fun alternative to a Yahoo live draft.

The problem is...
... that while everyone might say they can make it NOW, something could come up that would make you unavailable at that time, and then what?

I think the draft time already chosen is fine. If any of us can't make it, well then, they'll miss out on the smack talk.

We have all year for that, anyway.

I will make time for the yahoo draft...
...there's this crazy idea I have where I can watch the NCAA tournament AND draft at the same time.

So, I say leave it as is. Those that can't make it should rank their players on the Yahoo ranks and let the computer draft for them.

It sucks, but, having missed a draft here and there myself, I have ended up with a surprisingly good team that way, so it's not like Yahoo will give you Adam Hyzdu and then giggle.

And why is that time unacceptable...
...almost 5 weeks away?

You must be in some kind of demand.

I can't eliminate a day 5 weeks in advance.

Unless you have a prison sentence to start serving that day perhaps?

I told you, people don't like guns that shoot rock candy at them. You don't listen. You never listen.

And I'm not bailing you out either. You're on your own cubby.

I'm always in demand
Cause I'm the coolest cat around.

And I can eliminate that day when it's the NCAA tournament. I hope that most are going to be out watching it somewhere. It's kind of a big deal down here in these parts.
Selfish? Yes. But I think, also, people more othen than not have plans on Saturdays, whether it's going out, maybe taking care of kids, and might not have three-four hours (which is easily how long it'll take). Now Saturday afternoon, I could probably do that.

My thing is, did I miss an e-mail where we talked about days that would work? If so, sorry. But I think that at least deserves a small discussion, maybe something could be worked out.

And progs, I'm trying to get my sentence reduced. Figured with all these lawyers around here, I'd have a good shot. I mean, it's a rock candy gun for gosh sakes! That's a misdemeanor if I ever heard one. And I didn't mean to hurt anyone. That lady shouldn't have been crossing the park at that time with her stupid dog. So what if both had to go to the hospital? It's a free country, right? This whole thread is out of order!

The problem is...
... that Yahoo has so many leagues that you pretty much have to take the time slot available when you signed up. Personally, I think the one we got was OK, not perfect, but then, what time IS going to be perfect for ten people?

Let's do the best we can with it. This is the first year we've done this. We'll get it right and have fun. That's the whole point, right?

Now that I know the password and ID....
I can set up 10 teams in the crappy smack talk league..... Seriously, you may want to change the password and email it to the people in your group. Also, an online draft is a must. The chatroom would be a disaster and would take hours... Someone would pick the same players over and over and you have no real time limit that way. You have 90 seconds with the online draft per pick. Keeps it moving, and there is a chat board built in so you can smack talk all you want.

Executive Decision Time:

a) People not in our league can't weigh in on our draft. Sorry, but we're having a hard enough time with the 10 of us without other people throwing a wrench into the works.

b) We will draft, online, on Yahoo, on a weeknight. Unless I hear a strenuous objection, I am going with Thursday.

c) If you can't make it, do your pre-select list and let Yahoo auto-select for you.

That is all.

I think we should have kept our original time. It was close enough to the start of the season, those who could make it would make it, and if you can't, you can't.

That also negates the real nice advantage of using the Yahoo rankings.

Again, was anyone even consulted on this? Drafts are the best part of playing fantasy baseball. Surely, we should have tried to come to a together decision.

I mean, it's the Saturday of NCAAs. Maybe I'm the only one that goes out and watches this tournament with a bunch of people. If we could change it to the afternoon, that's one thing. But 10:45 (for us on the East Coast), um....

I'll consent if someone buys one of those phone/internet things where I can go out and do it that way. It would probably be to your advantage, because being in a drunken stupor, I'd repeatedly type in Hector Villanueva or Ty Griffin

I very excite about this upcoming season! Jenqui!

Or worse, Jason Marquis
Of course people were consulted.  There were only 97 emails and a BCB thread with 100+ comments.  I don't think anything is in stone yet.

I agree that a live draft would be best, but what with Al and his difficult travel plans, and all of you and your difficult NCAA basketball (what is that anyway), and what with people working, and what with people going to school - you see where I'm going with this.

However, I would be willing to agree to a system where we draft tomorrow, but I get to pick and choose whoever I want off of the rest of the rosters until opening day.

You guys
I don't care about hijakcing threads, but if you could not hijack threads about our fantasty leagues, especially when I'm trying to get all this figured out and can't get an answer from half the league, I'd appreciate it, especially when half the hijacking is done by people not even in our league.

Look, as far as the date and time of the draft, I didn't consult anyone, I just grabbed a spot so that we would have one. I forgot that was the during the tournament, and for that I apologize, since that's a big time of year for me, too. However, i'm willing to set aside that night for the draft.

What get really frustrating on here is that we've come up with a viable alternative, an off-Yahoo, online chat, and everyone a) grumbles about that but doesn't suggest anything else; or b) just doesn't answer at all. You guys have no idea how frustrating this is when everyone complains, but no one gives a viable alternative solution.

I don't care if we draft via Yahoo or not. God knows there are 10,000 fantasy magazines and articles out there that people can use to rank players. If we do that, I'll even offer to input everyone's teams, even though I'm the one with two kids and a full-time job, while half you guys are single and or in school, with enough free time on your hands that you can come here and post at all hours of day and night, but clearly don't have the time to a) give us an answer as to what you want to do about the draft, or b) put your freakin' players on your own roster.

Please, just stop screwing around on this thread and give me an answer as to what you want to do.

This isn't fun anymore.

You're telling me
Thus my "head is going to explode" and "you'll all be the death of me" posts.  Seriously, I've tried.

As I mentioned, I don't care whether we use Yahoo, whether we do it offline, whether we do it on Sunday or Thursday or on the moon.

I suggested an alternative: If people are absolutely unwilling to do it on Yahoo, I've set up a chatroom script on my webserver.  We could use that and input them later, as you mentioned.

So, for Christ sakes, I agree, let's just get the details hammered out before we end up just quitting.

I agree with both of you.
FWIW, I am in another Yahoo league where people are upset about the drafting system, so it's not just us. Yahoo should have figured the demand would be high and created a way for people to draft when THEY want, rather than setting "timeslots". That kills a lot of the fun.

That said, we'll figure it out. And Julie, remember, I have offered you help, whatever you need, to organize it if it's getting to be too much for you. Please take me up on this offer.

i think
yahoo is doing this intentionally to get people to pay the 25 dollars per person and choose their own time slot.

julie, i think you and al should choose a time and drafting system, and everyone will just have to live with it. whatever/whenever it is, i'll either show up or put my rank list in ahead of time. if people wanted more say, they should have spoke up and suggested something instead of complaining. this is fantasy baseball for crying out loud, its not like we're trying to sign everyone up for a retirement plan.

The thing is...
...if it is not done on Yahoo, there is no way to automate picks for those who can't make it, and it seems unlikely to find a time when every single person can make it.

Frankly, I'm hoping you guys will just declare this a dead issue and go with whatever time Yahoo assigns.  If people can't make it, seriously, it is not the end of the world.

Then again if there is some miracle and everyone wants to do this some other way and everyone can make it, I've set something up.  Let's just decide already.

Come on, you guys, all this is a) not necessary and b) extremely embarrassing. Really. Enough.

Don't let it embarrass you.
It was all done because we want you here.

I changed our draft time
It's now 5:45 pm (CST) on Sunday, March 25. Is that better?
HENDRY!

by cubbiejulie on Feb 18, 2007 6:23 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Way better.
Hey! Nice to see you here!

(I may be late to the draft -- that's 5:45 CDT that day... I'll still be at the game. But I'll join in when I get back.)

I usually have Sundays off
So anytime works for me.  And if I don't have Sunday off, I will tell my boss that a fantasy draft sounds like a lot more fun than some job that pays me less than McDonalds would.

So, yeah, sounds good to me.

I support Julie! :)

welcome back
i won't be able to draft that day, as i'll be on a plane for sunny sarasota and a stuffy medical conference. but have fun without me.
DEJESUS!!!

Oh no
You're the last person I wanted to inconvenience with this. Yahoo just added a ton more time slots. If you guys come up with a better time, I'll grab it.

Tom,if you want, I'll draft for you.

Hey that is good news
Looks like Yahoo has figured something out at least.

Then again, this just means more pick-a-fucking-date-already headaches ;)

I agree.
Tomas, could you make it LATER on that Sunday? If there's a timeslot open?

I'll make it easy on everybody here...
...pick a date. I'll be there unless I'm killed.

If it's during work time, I'll figure out a way to sneak it past my boss or I'll call out sick.

If I have a date planned that evening (not likely probably, still kind of feeling beat up right now), I'll cancel.

Pick a date. I'll be there.

Up to March 14...
... anytime's probably OK with me.

After that evenings would be better, as I will be in Arizona.

by Al on Feb 18, 2007 7:15 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

later wouldn't work
i'd have to find an internet cafe to do it, and the missus wouldn't be too keen on me leaving the night we get into florida to draft a fantasy baseabll league. if it works for everyone else to do it that night, then that's probably easiest. otherwise, anytime not between feb 25 and march 2 i can do.
DEJESUS!!!

by tomas21 on Feb 19, 2007 10:41 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Pfffft
Want me to talk to the missus? We can go out to lunch, hit Ann Taylor, and I can explain to her the importance of fantasy baseball.  ;)

I STILL maintain that an online, off-Yahoo draft is the best idea for getting everyone together at a time where we can take as much time as we want and everyone will have fun. Like I said, we can still pre-select our players via Yahoo and use th list to draft off of. We'll just enter them by hand later. We could even do it the night before the season starts, and that would be a fun way to kick it off, I think.

I love Wokiees
Let him have it. It's not wise to upset a Wookiee.

But sir, nobody worries about upsetting a droid.

That's 'cause droids don't pull people's arms out of their sockets when they lose. Wookiees are known to do that.

I should be doing work right now. Instead, I'm watching Empire Strikes Back for the third time this week. I rock.

Without stat-geekiness...
i don't exist.

Seriously! I'm a freakin' physics major that plays D&D, models aliens and atmospheres on a computer, and is thinking of making my own projection system. I can't help myself!

I can restrain myself from imposing my stats-geekness on the rest of you. After all, that would take away from one of the few competitive advantages i'd have.
