Thanks
I love XM and was wondering what games would be on.  You saved me a lot of time.  I appreciate it.

Question
I have sirius and I guess they are merging with XM. Will I be able to listen to those games???

by FLCubsFan on Feb 26, 2007 4:30 PM CST reply actions

Not yet on Sirius
This merger will take a while to happen, if it happens at all. The FCC is going to be against it just like it was when Directv and Dish Network tried to merge.

by LT on Feb 26, 2007 4:36 PM CST up reply actions

However...
.. XM and Sirius have been losing a lot of money and have shown no ability to do so. It may not be possible for either of them to exist unless they are allowed to merge. If not, one likely will go out of business, leaving the other to absorb listeners and programming.

Does sirius
have espn and gameday? I bought XM specifically to catch the Cubs while in the car. Also, who are the broadcasters for the Cubs XM games?

XM
typically carries the broadcast of the home team.  So if the game is at Wrigley, it would be Pat and Ron.  If it is a road game, then it is the other team's broadcast.

by jazzman56 on Feb 26, 2007 6:32 PM CST up reply actions

not always
Sometimes it is not the home team broadcast.  Last year I could not really determine a pattern.  It was probably Pat & Ron more than the other team's guys, and usually the home team, but not always.

by Ihatethecards on Feb 27, 2007 11:08 AM CST up reply actions

That's why...
I said "typically".

I listened to XM a lot last year, and I would say 80%+ of the time it was the home team broadcast and it seemed that most of the time that it wasn't, it was due to some technical glitch, which XM seemed to have a lot of last year.

By the way...some thoughts about the merger:

  1.  The concept of a dual receiver that will receive both providers is pure speculation. I suspect the FCC will draw a red line thru this one first thing.
  2. Any and all comments about the merger happening and the timing of same is also speculation, because as has been pointed out, there are major regulatory hurdles to be overcome.  Past history indicates that the merger will not be approved unless they get real creative in the way they present it, so that it does not appear that there is no competition.
  3. It is hard to take the claims of unprofitability seriously when you look at the contracts given to Howard Stern, Oprah, MLB, NFL, etc.  Looking for FCC relief from what were clearly bad business decisions is bogus, and everyone knows it.
  4. Because, of 3, as others have pointed out, look for both providers to move to more of a "pay per listen" structure, which will result in MORE red ink and more upheaval.
Stay tuned, the satellite radio business is about to get blown up.

XM
I used XM last year just for Cubs games.  I live in Minneapolis so it was wonderful to hear Pat and Ron when I could.  XM also has an ESPN station.  They also cover Big Ten games.

by bleedhawkeyegold on Feb 26, 2007 7:12 PM CST up reply actions

Yes
XM has ESPN radio and ESPNnews. As others have said, the broadcasters almost always are the home broadcasters. XM also has the right to broadcast games for the Big Ten, ACC and Pac 10.

Yeah
Usually I've been tuning in to catch Dan Patrick and Collin Cowherd. I'm glad they don't broadcasat Jim Rome. I can't stand Jim Rome.

If and when they merge
I read in a recent NYTimes article about this that if they do merge, technologies will be made available to allow current subscribers to hear both program lineups

by madmf on Feb 27, 2007 9:20 AM CST up reply actions

It appears
as though the entire structure of XM/Sirius may change if the merge goes through. The way I read it, fans won't all of a sudden get double the programming. They will be able to pick and choose the stations they wish, and likely the more you choose, the more you pay.

Sirius
They do have espn not sure about gameday. I usually keep it on the nfl station.

by FLCubsFan on Feb 26, 2007 8:24 PM CST reply actions

The merger
according to the e-mail I received from Siruis is that its suppose to be final this fall.  Then, they will get rid of duplicate music stations and have more of a subscription format for the stars and sports of each.
2007 is the year, I can feel it in my bones.

I would love to be able to
Pick and choose my programming.

A select 5 or 6 music channels, Big 12, MLB, and NFL.  I'm set - as long as I don't pay more than I do now :)

For anyone living in the Great White North...
...it appears XM Canada will also be carrying MLB games this year as well.  Good news.
