Burnitz Retires

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2794708

Jeromy Burnitz, who hit 315 home runs in a 14-year career with the New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers and five other clubs, has decided to retire, his agent said.

315 hrs? I guess if you can stick around long enough... I think he was just another bad pick for the cubs that year in making a player try to do what they simply were not capable of doing.

Burnitz...
... had a decent year for the Cubs, actually. Not great, but not too far off his career averages. Naturally, he was nowhere near the skewed Colorado numbers he had put up the year before.

I think Burnitz worked hard and did as well as he possibly could have under the circumstances. If he'd have been a Cub in the prime of his career he might have put up some nice numbers at Wrigley Field.

Agree to a point
Nice player but as soon as signed in '05 I had the feeling we were consigned to not getting to World Series...just couldn't see a team with that OF going that far. he did play OF well and had a good arm, unlike his successor.

I'm much more excited about this present OF and future lookin good with Colvin, Coats, Pie, etc...about time Cub farm system starting delivering some talent and OF is a good place to start since have 3X as many cracks at it.

Burnitz
I liked Burnitz the year he was here.  Yeah, he wasn't a great player, but he was pretty much what I expected.  And how can you not like a guy who wears his socks high (okay that's not a good reason).

I also enjoyed Burnitz
during his stay here.  He was a good transition from the prima-donna Sosa days. Jeromy was a hard worker, and played beyond his natural talents.  He was also a better fielder than most people gave him credit for.

I will always remember his follow-through after a swing on how his bat would wrap around and touch the back of his shoulders, almost like he just swung a golf club.

Go Cubs!

Burnitz
to me was a classy ballplayer.  I always like his attitude and he did do a good job with the Cubs.  I gotta admit I was one of Sammy's biggest fans during his time with us and was happy to see Burnitz replace him if someone had to.  I wish him the best as he ventures off to life without playing the sport he loved.
My 11 year old grandaughter told me the Cubbies wouldn't win a WS in my lifetime, ya reckon? I still believe.

I wish him well
He worked hard as a Cub, and gave his all every time I saw him play. He respected the fans, and appreciated his position as a guy who got to play a game for a living. I always thought he was a real pro.

I liked Jeromy.
But it was funny to hear him do interviews.  For a big, burly, lumberjack-looking guy, his voice was so tiny.  But he was dedicated to his craft and never forgot one of the most important rules in baseball:  "adjust, adjust, adjust."

I liked
Jeromy when he was with the Cubs too. I remember during an interview and he got one of Z's shaving cream pies in the face. He said it made him feel like he was one of the boys.
Let's play ball!!

So long, Burny
I liked Burnitz, too. He had a tough job in walking out into right field after Sammy's rather ignominious departure, and I thought he did it with class and humility. He also rocks the "high socks" and looks like he stepped out of 1925 (though, gulp, he's the same age as me!).

Good luck, Jeromy! Thanks for the one fairly decent season.

By the way, did anyone else notice this line buried in the end of the article:

Burnitz, Phil Nevin, Brian Jordan and Eric Young are among several aging position players who either failed to receive offers from big league clubs this offseason or declined to pursue lesser opportunities.

Ah, Phil Nevin. You asked to be traded and now you can't get a job. You should've just stuck around, the Cubs could've saved you the trouble of all those phone calls to Minnesota and put you in the same place.

I didn't have the ball, bitch!
