LaRussa Arrested For Suspicion of DUI

Looks like Tony is trying to drink his sorrows away with the pitching staff he has this year:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070322/ap_on_sp_ba_ne/bbn_cardinals_larussa_dui_2

"The 62-year-old LaRussa gave two breath samples and was determined to have a blood alcohol content of 0.093 percent, Jupiter police said in a statement. Florida's legal driving limit is 0.08 percent."

Lock him up and throw away the key.

I thought
geniuses were supposed to know better than that.  Just one more reason to think he's an asshole.

three diaries
on this story?

"Lock him up and throw away the key."?

Thank God nobody is overreacting.

Just a joke
about the "lock him up and throw away the key" thing.

Still, Tony has been a naughty boy.

One day, the dream will come true.

I wouldn't call it over-reacting...
especially if he had run into someone and killed them.

It turned out he didn't, but the fact remains that because he chose to drink and drive he was a dangerous weapon on the highway with the potential to kill innocent people, and that is just disgusting in my book!

A lot of people don't realize that over 16,000 people were killed in drunk driving-related accidents last year in this country! Last time I checked that is about 15,000 more people who died than were killed in Iraq.

Sorry, but I have no sympathy or tolerance for anyone who decides to drink and drive on our highways.

If you think you've seen it all...just wait!

I was about to get really political
but I won't do it here. Instead, I'll just point you to this website if you care to see the real numbers:

http://icasualties.org/oif/

Mind you those numbers also don't consider civilian casualties.

None of this is intended to discount the seriousness of driving drunk - don't do it, call a cab, call a friend, call family, or walk.

by false cognate on Mar 22, 2007 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions

thanks....
but I wasn't refering to "ALL" deaths in Iraq!

I was ONLY comparing deaths resulting from drunk driving in America (approx. 16,000) to number of American servicemen (in Iraq) who have been killed in the last year (which is approx 1,000).

My point is that we (as a nation) freak out about approx 1,000 US soldiers dying in war every year, but hardly even think about the 16,000 US citizens who die from drunk driving accidents in the same year.

I' not trying to be political--I'm just looking at the numbers and asking why?

If you think you've seen it all...just wait!

Nothing personal...
... I deleted the other two diaries on this topic... if you want to discuss, do it here... thanks.

Wait!
I wanted to put separate comments in all three diaries and post my own!  Now I can only be snarky about it in one diary.

Pitching
I don't know if you have been watching, but the pitching staff has looked great this spring for the Cardinals.

by cubfaninSTL on Mar 22, 2007 8:58 AM CDT reply actions

Yes, exactly!
I saw something on-line the ohter day that said three of their starting pitchers had only given up 3 combined runs so far (as of Monday)!

That is a little scarry!

If you think you've seen it all...just wait!

by CubFanSince1970 on Mar 22, 2007 9:11 AM CDT up reply actions

But is it realistic............
...........to think Kip Wells, Anthony Reyes and Bradon Looper will pitch well over 25-30 starts each?

Going into last year, didn't Jeff Suppan, Jason Marquis and Sidney Ponson seem like better options?

Wainwright was key when the Cards dealt JD Drew to the Braves several years ago, and I think he will be a good arm.  That being said, he's still a rookie starter in the NL this year.

Carpenter is solid, but after that there are many question marks on the Turdbird staff - and that's without discussing their bullpen!!

Thats why..
Spring training is a terrible time for talent evaluation.
Well, sometimes nothin is a real cool hand.

Which all Cub fans
should keep in mind when talking about Jason Marquis

by Peoria Matt on Mar 22, 2007 11:03 PM CDT up reply actions

who cares
they are in the grapefruit league, which is much, much, much more pitcher friendly.

I suppose they should also be afraid that Derrek Lee is batting over .500 in the Cactus league? No. These numbers are hardly projectable. If I remember reading correctly, Jason Marquis had an ERA under 2 in the Grapefruit league last year, and we all know how he did during the regular season.

Baby, you got a stew goin'

Is it true that Phat Albert...
...has shrunk this year? That's what I'm hearing from friends anyway.

Passed out

at 0.093?!

What a lightweight!

by salparadise23 on Mar 22, 2007 9:43 AM CDT reply actions

I was thinking
that if he was passed out with that level of alcohol in his system, that there may be some other medical problem involved. I hope they tested him for symptoms of stroke, at least.

I don't like drunk driving either, but I am willing to cut SOME slack for a first offender.

Repeat offenders (who don't learn the first time) need to be punished severely, imo.

by Tekboy on Mar 22, 2007 11:25 AM CDT up reply actions

I would bet
this isn't the first time he drove drunk, but the first time he was caught.

Make an example out of him, I say.  But that's only because I think he's an asshole of a manager.

by socalbob on Mar 22, 2007 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he gets
a mulligan here. He's never had a problem. Take the fine, perhaps community service (let him spay a few more cats) and let him go. I don't like him, I don't like the Cardinals -- but this can happen to anybody who's tired, has a few drinks and gets behind the wheel, when they know they shouldn't. Thankfully, he didn't hurt anybody else -- or himself.
