Dusty's TV Debut

And FJM has the Scoop:

http://www.firejoemorgan.com/2007/03/baseball-is-here.html

"From reader Philip:

I caught some of the Mets-Braves game this afternoon which I believe was the ESPN debut of FJM favorite Dusty Baker along with Ric Sutcliffe and Dave Ryan. In the bottom of the first the three were discussing the Mets batting David Wright second in their batting order. Dusty says, "He (Wright) stole 20 bases last year so you don't have to worry about him clogging up the bases at the top of the order." For reference, first game, bottom of the first inning, first "clogging up the bases" quote from Dusty Baker."

Damn!
I turned on the game after that. Missed that remark -- I'd have been on the floor laughing.

I watched the game too and
They had to pick winners of each division then wild card etc etc. He picked the Cubs to win the division.

Hmmm
My first thought when I read this post twas that Baker's obviously setting himself up to say that Piniella got much better talent than Baker ever did.

I'm sorry, I know I'm cynical.

Maybe this is a stupid question...
...but do you guys think Dusty was being serious or was he poking fun at himself? I still just can't believe anyone would actually say something like that.
I didn't have the ball, bitch!

If he was poking fun at himself...
... then he's a lot cleverer than I think anyone would have imagined.

I don't see it.

Dusty talking about Aaron
I caught the end of their conversation about Hank Aaron's 715th home run.  Dusty said his contribution to the day was hitting a double after the celebration delay.  I went to retrosheet.org to look at the game log.  I know it's been over 30 years, and memories can fade, but Dusty walked after the 715th home run.  He got a double earlier in the game, scoring Aaron, who had walked in front of him.

I watched
most of that game, and Dusty displayed some pretty good insight on occasion, as did Sutcliffe.

Dusty was also quite gracious in the discussion of all the new managers, including Lou.

But I was unsure if he was ever going to be able to extract his nose out of Minaya's butt after it was time for Omar to leave.

He did a lot better than I thought he would, and I think that he will be a good guy to listen to this year on the ESPN telecasts.

Dusty
I agree with others that he was not joking. The man clearly doesn't buy into the OBP camp and seemingly thumbs his nose at it whenever possible. The thing is that Dusty is a "that's my story and I'm sticking with it" kind of guy. He'd clearly cut off his nose to spite his face. The thing is that now, as he's trying out for his next managerial gig, he's making a big time fool of himself. There are guys like Bavasi in Seattle who likely will consider Dusty when they invariably have a managerial opening, but I think Dusty may have a much more difficult time landing another managerial job than he realizes.
