Bud Selig doesn't care (MLBEI related)

Paul Sullivan has a piece on Bud's comments regarding the MLB - DirecTV deal.  It's obvious Bud only cares about the money and is turning his back on thousands of avid fans.

full article :

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-070303cubsbrite,1,3160905.story?coll =cs-cubs-headlines

Bud quotes from within :

"I've heard for years we have too much product out there"

what ?  MLB is better off by being less visible?  no wonder Bud the Dorkus hasnt done anything about insane blackout rules.

"As for this deal, what fascinates me is I have spent a lot of time going over it and trying to find out who can't get [DirecTV].

"We're down now to such small numbers, that I'm really wondering [about the fuss]."

WHAT?  you wanna pull MLBEI off my cable/dish operator with 4 weeks to go before the season starts.... forcing me to scramble and change my provider.. a provider I am very happy with and may have a bundled TV/internet/phone deal which saves me a lot of money... and you don't understand THE FUSS?

It's simple.  Bud doesn't care about me.  He doesn't care about you.  He only cares about the money.

i just saw this, too
LOL, i was just coming to post about the same article.

i just cant understand selig.  there's obviously a raving mass hunting for his head on a pike (one with rust on it), so if you have such a mocking opinion, it's best to not tell the media.

i guess if i supported the directTV deal i'd think the same?  who knows.  it seems a lot of people here despise the thought.

Oh, brother.
Is he going to get a firestorm of angry comments about this.

Sure, I can get DirecTV.

BUT I DON'T WANT TO CHANGE!!!11!!!

What is it about this that these idiots don't get?

And I don't get the "too much product", either. What, you don't want people watching your games? The Cubs knew for years that putting home games on TV made people want to come to the park. Televising all the home games created three generations of Cubs fans. Contrast this with the Blackhawks approach to TV, which has marginalized them.

I swear, pro sports are all run by morons.

WGN In The 60's and 70's....
.....is a GREAT example. When asked, how many of us have said that one of the main reasons we're Cub fans is because we got to see them on TV just about whenever we wanted back in the days when our allegiances were forming? Whether it was in the 60's and 70's, or with the advent of cable in the 80's where people all over the country could see them, it made for a huge Cub following. How many times do we hear about how a Pittsburgh crowd or a San Diego crowd or a Houston crowd sounded like it was a Cubs crowd? And why is that? BECAUSE THEY WERE AT THE GAME, after having seen them on TV. It adds revenue streams, some  these bozos can't even measure, from game attendance to beer sales to local hotel, restaurant and retail profits that road fans generate because they travel well.

And who knows? The more Devil Ray games that Joe Sixpack in Clinton. Iowa gets to watch maybe he forms a Devil Ray alliance because he's like to retire to Tampa someday. He makes plans to vacation there, attends a few games and learns to like it all. Bud Selig aspires to be a moron. Right now his brain has less activity than Anna Nicole Smith's.

Dear Bud,
You should have called me ... I might have been able to help you figure out "who can't get DirecTV."

I mean, it might only be a small percentage of us ... you know, those who LIVE IN APARTMENT BUILDINGS.

No problem, I can just watch on MLB.TV for $20 a month, because your spotty service was such a bargain last year.

I am furious.  But alas, there is no recourse. And today I find out that Comcast cable in Connecticut doesn't carry WGN.  That's awesome.

what a twat
Way to run the league effectively, dipshit....

Yeah, we see enough games already, so clearly the league should take steps to make those games harder to watch. We're already satisfied with what we get.

Exactly.
He is utterly, utterly clueless. Is there no one around him who can get him to see the point of view of most fans? After all, we are his best customers.

I have hated Selig for a long time
this just adds to it.  I usually don't say I hate someone because it's a little extreme.  I didn't hate Neifi, I just didn't think he was very good.  I didn't hate Baker.  I just wanted him gone.  I hate Selig.  There is no one that makes me want to throw something at the TV like him.

330,000 versus 1.3M
that is his arrogant reasoning and DirectTV wants exclusiveness because they need to go to the Investment Banks/Private Equity world for money to fill this out.

I think MLB is arrogant and short sided on this. They could offer those a two or three year transition with their cable outlet as they look to improve their product on the Internet and satellite and then increase the price to the subsriber who does not change.

the question is what are they going to do with exclusivity?

Here is my take...remove the anti trust clause...force baseball to compete then see what happens.

I am not a good empathetic person since I enjoy taking my laptop outside on my patio and watching the game, even an archived game but that is me...and BTW with the side flat screen the picture is good, but live out in Colorado.

The really disgusting party
Is the DirecTV claim that ONLY 5,000 people would be affected. That presumably is based on the theory that all but 5.000 people could easily switch to DirecTV. Thatis clearly a lie. As I have stated before I am one of the VERY few DirecTV customers in NYC. The vast majority of New Yorkers CAN NOT GET DIRECTV. Either  because they don't have the clear exposure needed or they are not permitted to by various rules. You can quote the rule on Condo's & Co-ops being required to give people access till the cows come home but that does not make it so. In New York you have to sue your co-op board if you want to put out a doormat  ( or close to it)

I happen to be a VERY sastisfied DirecTV customer but that does
not mean I think people should be FORCED to get it for EI. Luckily Congress is in sort of mean muscle flexing mood. I think this going to blow up in Bud's face

Right.
And that's not only true in NYC, but many areas where DirecTV is simply not available due to various restrictions.

If Congress is going to get in the act they had better do it soon. Opening Day is four weeks from today.

Nothing
If you live in Chicago and our Cubs fan this has little
or no effect. If you want to watch gobs of games from OTHER
teams, or are a Cubs fan who does NOT live in Chicago than
you are screwed unless you get Directv

I get
Comcast Sports Network and WGN on my Dish Network satelitte so I will still be able to watch the Cubs right? I've never gotten EI because I have no interest in watching other teams.

I think the deal is going through
but they will lose my $170.  They arrogance and stupidity of this statement by Bud is beyond belief.  Monday, I will be calling the Cubs to voice my displeasure and hopefully, they will vote against it.  I've been a season ticket holder since 1983 and this deal is as bad as anything I've seen, including all the lousy teams I've paid to watch over all these years.

this isn't the typical...
"meat and potatoes" style of bullshit that we typically get from this league. This goes above and beyond...I'd call it horseshit, even.

Yup.
FWIW, to cubswin above, calling the Cubs won't accomplish anything. They don't really have a say in this -- and neither does Bud, really. It's his minions at MLB Advanced Media who are behind this deal, and as noted in another thread, Chase Carey, the president of DirecTV, used to be an executive at the predecessor to MLBAM.

The whole thing stinks to high heaven.

you may be right Al
but I'll feel much better venting my anger to them.   I thought the teams still have to vote to approve this deal.  I know San Deigo and Philadelphia are unhappy with it.

Sure, go ahead.
I'd also contact Selig's office. And don't contact the office in NY. Fax him at his office in Milwaukee, where he spends most of his time.

Chase Carey....
....is one of the Fox morons (Peter Chernin the other) responsible for trading Mike Piazza along with Todd Zeile from the Dodgers to the Marlins  for Gary Sheffield, Charles Johnson, Bobby Bonilla, and Jim Eisenreich. As Dodger fans have long lamented, it was the beginning of the end of "Dodger Tradition" as they knew it.

Bud is the worst, worse than Barry Bonds.
He and Fehr are to blame on the steroid era. In many ways I've absolved Bonds of much wrongdoing, because he was a guy watching everyone else cheat around him and decided to join them. He didn't create that atmosphere, Selig did through his inaction. Selig is a POS.

I am
going to send letters to my Congressman and both Senators tomorrow, voicing my displeasure, and asking them for a congressional investigation into this deal.

I wonder who is REALLY going to profit the most from all this?
