2007 Community Projections: Jason Marquis

Well, this ought to be interesting.

I think most of you know that I think Marquis will snap back to near his 2004 numbers with the Cardinals. He's never going to be a Cy Young-caliber pitcher, but I see no reason he can't be a serviceable fifth starter.

I think Mr. Marquis will find his way into the Rusch role by July 1.

It is good to be home again!!!!!!

Marquis
I'm working on my specific projection but I kind of expect Marquis to have an okay but not great year.  Around 500.  Do enough to keep us in games when he starts and win games 5-4 when he wins.

If Prior is healthy he will be a decent 5th starter.

For Cub fans spring training combines the eternal hope of spring with the irrational belief in the impossible.

Rusch redux?
Well, at $8mm more a year, what are you guys sayin' here?

Hopefully, he'll throw many less HR balls than Rusch.

However, should he falter, I believe Miller will take his place.

Unless Prior is hurt, the rotation will be somethng like:

Z
Lilly
Prior
Hill
Marquis

Wade Miller supplants any of the faltering above. At least until the trade deadline.

That's my shot. I was going to try and bump him down to a Rusch role, but frankly it just doesn't look like Miller is going to be able to get himself out of the role and into Marquis' fifth spot.

ha yeah
After I posted it I kept thinking about it while at work and thought about how impossible those numbers really are. If his ERA is south of 4.5 that would be a very good sign. I got caught up in the optimism I suppose. I hope, and think in my heart of hearts, he can and will be league average in that 5 spot. Oh how I hope that happens.....

by hawkeyenation on Mar 5, 2007 12:10 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think
He will be 2007's Rusch at the amount of money they paid, unless he completely sucks.

He'll get his 200 innings - but I have no idea what they'll look like.

Unfortunately

I think this projection and Rich Hill's projection are both wildly optimistic.

I'll be happy if Marquis' ERA is under 5.0, but I don't think it's likely.

the fact that FF doesn't like Marquis, but has a mancrush on Hill is well documented, and pretty played as far as I'm concerned.

It was a REALLY bad idea to sign this chump
What is it with these ego-maniac teams and coaches that want to take the guy with the ERA over 6.00 and say they can fix them?  They all want to defy the odds and say, "I told you so."

It would have been much smarter to take a guy with a better track record and stop this madness.  They should have went after Padilla instead.

The Cubs will regret this.  We're looking at a sub .500 pitcher with a 5.25 ERA if we're lucky.

This signing negates a lot of the other good signings the Cubs made this off season.  This signing disgusts me.

One day, the dream will come true.

As I've pointed out...
Indeed last year was a wreck. BUT La Russa counted on him as the SOLID #2 behind Carpenter for two years in a row. One year was a 100+ win season and NLCS appearance for the team.

Again, LaRussa is many things, but stupid is not one.

I (and Millions of dollars) are betting he'll be at least .500.

We will all have to wait and see.

by TheEman on Mar 5, 2007 1:02 PM CST up reply actions

I agree......
and the shame of it is that with how bad the team was last season, Hendry really couldn't afford to make any throw away signings.

He's not that terrible of a pitcher
He's just got some mental issues. If he can work those out and LISTEN to people, then he'll probably a servicable innings-eater.

that seems highly unlikely
Everything above is unlikely, but I'm talking about the hits specifically: he's given up more hits than innings pitched almost every year of his career.

The funny thing is...
... with these projections all over the place, we're likely to get one that's actually fairly realistic once all the numbers are totalled up.

Re: that seems highly unlikely
Yeah, I know my projections are highly unlikely, and yet it's March, and I am still optimistic. Maybe, he's not a horse. Let's call him a mule, and maybe, just maybe, this mule has a hard-on to show La Russa and the Cardinals that they screwed-up. Wouldn't that be sweet?

Oh, for F**k's sake, somebody find me straight jacket, before I type more stupid stuff!!

Hey Lou, we're long overdue.

by deadcatbounce on Mar 5, 2007 7:01 PM CST up reply actions

here's the logical progression:
If we can't call him a horse, let's call him a mule. But since we can't really call him a mule, let's call him a jackass.

I think our new Jackass will bray his way into a 5+ era this season. If he puts up those kind of numbers, I just don't think he's keeping kosher.

But the Cubs will be in Cincinnati that day.

Marquis 2007
The reason Marquis posted double digit wins the past two seasons is the team he was on, not his 'talent'.  I don't see the Cubs offense being able to bail him out the way the Cards did.  Signing Marquis was a desperation move motivated by not being able to count on Prior and not wanting to count on a crop of young arms again.  His contract must have been offered after one of Hendry's binges.

Marquis is going to eat innings.  And batters are going to eat him.  Let's hope that in the process, he gives the Cubs enough opportunities to win that the rest of his efforts don't sink the ship.
