Extra innings was a theme across the Cubs system today as Iowa and Peoria joined the major leaguers in going into extra frames. The game in Kane County looks like it faced similar conditions to Wrigley as the single-A team finally put up some offense.
Nashville 2 - Iowa 1 (10 innings)
Pitching Notes: SP Ryan O'Malley had another solid outing, allowing 1 ER on a home run over 6 innings. He gave up 5 hits, walked 2 and struck out 1. Cory Bailey (1ip, 2 hits) and Clay Rapada (2ip, 1 BB, 2Ks) pitched three scoreless innings before Ben Howard gave up the winning run in the 10th.
Hitting Notes: CF Angel Pagan went 2-5 with a double. Michael Fontenot went 2-4 with a home run. C Geovany Soto went 2-4 with a double.
Other Notes: The solo HR that O'Malley allowed came in the 6th inning off of Brewers top prospect Ryan Braun.
Tennessee 3 - Mobile 3
Pitching Notes: SP Mark Holliman may be turning some heads in the Cubs organization. He went 8 innings, giving up 8 hits, walked none and struck out 6. This is his third start and has not allowed an earned run in 21 innings. For the season he's struck out 16 while walking 3. Jim Henderson notched his 2nd save of the season, pitching a scoreless 9th, though he did give up a hit and walked a batter.
Hitting Notes: 3B Jemel Spearman went 2-3, driving in a run and scoring a run. 1B Issmael Salas hit his second home run of the season. CF Chris Walker, who got some play in spring training with the big club went 1-3 with a walk in the leadoff spot.
Peoria 9 - Kane County 7 (12 innings)
Pitching Notes: Starter Billy Muldowney only lasted two innings in this one, yielding 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits, walking 2 and striking out 1. Jayson Ruhlman picked up some innings in relief, thrown 3.2 scoreless, striking out 6 while walking 1. Jeremy Papelbon got hit around over 2.1 innings, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits, 2 walks and striking out 1. Rocky Roquet and Peoria newcomer Charles Platt each pitched two scoreless innings.
Hitting Notes: The Chiefs scored 3 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th to get this one to extra innings. RF Andrew Lopez went 2-5 with a double in the leadoff spot. RF DJ Lewis went 2-5 and hit his second homer of the season. Russell Canzler went 2-6 and scored a run. C Blake Lalli went 2-6 with 4 RBIs. SS Dylan Johnston went 1-4 and walked twice. 8 K's and 6 walks for the Chiefs today. DmL
