Minor League Round-up: 4/24/07

One would expect good things to happen across the Cubs organization with Rich Hill, Carlos Marmol, Donnie Veal and Jeff Samardzjia all starting games throughout the Cubs system today. Not so much, as pending the outcome of the Cubs-Brewers game the organization risks going 0-4.

Nashville 7 - Iowa 1

  • Pitching Notes: For those who thought Angel Guzman's rough start a few days ago would result in Carlos Marmol getting the nod, well, Marmol didn't fare well in this matinee. Marmol lasted 5.1 innings, allowed 4 runs on 5 hits including 1 HR. Marmol also walked 4 and struck out 3. Clay Rapada showed no reason to be on the Cubs 40-man roster, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits in 1.2 innings. His season ERA is now 8.59.  Ben Howardsurrendered an unearned run in 1 inning of work.
  • Hitting Notes: The I-Cubs collected 3 hits today, with Angel Pagan, Eric Patterson, and Buck Coats having the success. Patterson hit a two bagger and drove in the only run for Iowa.
  • Other Notes: It was a 10:30am start for the series ender. Iowa likely was thrilled to get out of Nashville after getting swept in the 4-game series.
  • Mobile 6 - Tennessee 1
  • Pitching Notes: Donnie Veal got roughed up in a brief 3.1 inning outing. Veal allowed 6 earned runs, giving up 6 hits, walking 5 while striking out 5.
  • Hitting Notes: A big night for RF Josh Kroger who wetn 4-4 with a double. SS Joe Simokaitis went 3-4. Sam Fuld and Jorge Cortes each went 2-4. Despite a few big nights, however, Tennessee stranded 10 runners. A Brian Dopirak update; he went 0-4 and saw his season average fall to .189.
  • Palm Beach 3 - Daytona 0
  • Pitching Notes: Jeff Samardzjia picked up the loss in this one, giving up 3 runs (1 earned) in 5.1 innings. Samardzjia threw 5.1 innings, walked 3 and struck out 4. Ben Petrick continues to get a lot of work in relief, allowing 1 hit while striking out 3 over 2.2 innings. Grant Johnson threw a scoreless inning walking one and striking out one.
  • Hitting Notes: SS Robinson Chirinos went 2-3. Solo hits for RF Jesus Valdez and CF Tyler Colvin, who hit a double.
  • Kane County @ Peoria - Cancelled

This game was cancelled due to rain. It will not be made up.
